Troy Better Than Ed?

313 posts in this topic

I can't believe the consistent dissal of Ed's greatness. The reiging deffensive player of the year(Troy) was unanimously ranked best saftey by ESPN. Troy is a is a great player but he's not better than Ed. Even if he's your preference; the disparity between the two isn't that great. Troy recieved 17 votes for DPOY, Ed got 1. Troy took all 8 votes for ESPN's top satey. Ed was a unanimous 2nd. Ed is my favorite player so maybe my opinion doesn't count. I just can't believe the blatant disrespect that Troy is significantly better than Ed. What do you think?

In the news section there's an article about Smith wanting Webb's # and paying $10,000 for it, it's talked about there. I don't know about the rest of the forum.

Well, I agree there is no significant difference in talent as well.I think that since Ed's neck problems became a career threatening one, Troy is now unquestionably the more complete player.Bias aside, I'd personally take Reed over Hairball. But this is like the Brady or Manning debate...there is no wrong answer, and it will never end.

darren woodson made a great point. Troy is PERFECT for that D, but if you are starting with another team, give me ed reed. Reed can fit in any D and try would struggle to replicate his impact in another scheme

I don't know why some of ESPN analyst dismiss Ed Reed so quickly siting how Troy is better against the Run.... Well Reed has always been a willing and solid tackler ( sometimes he passes up the opportunity of tackle in an attempt to cause the big play turnover ) but it's not like Ed Reed avoids tackling.....

Plus Troy is a SS... SS are now to be run stuffers, just because he finally began catching ints dont mean he is a better safety

You shouldn't expect any less from the Squeeler loving media. Troy has no where near the skill or football intelligence Ed Reed has and he has said this. :th_towel-1:

If it wasn't for his neck/shoulder injury he would have probably had like 13-14 ints this season and even then then the dumb national media would have a problem saying Reed is better.

But personally I really don't care.

i already commented on that story on ESPN and I'll say the same thing here that I said there, their obsession with ranking players on a point system is ridiculous. Ed and Troy should have been 1a and 1b on that list. They are trying to compare apples and oranges as they say with where both players are currently in their career. Both guys are exceptional and two of the best players in the game period.

At the same time when you look at the whole picture its really hard to argue against Ed being the best for his entire career. Let's look at some of the perceived negatives to Ed's game or career.

Durability: Ed has missed 16 regular season games in his career. Troy in one fewer season has missed 19. Huge disparity there, huh?

Versatility: Troy is without a doubt the best and most versatile Steeler in their defense. Without his ability to play in the box, bring blitz pressure, and solid instincts in coverage he allows their defense to operate better, period. That said, Troy is no free safety and I think he would be in way over his head at the position. I know he wasn't 100% but it is arguable his poor coverage in the Super Bowl is what cost the Steelers that game. I think he is still looking for Greg Jennings...Ed is now set at free safety at this point in his career (and obviously it is where he is better) but I seem to recall him starting quite a few games at strong safety early in his career and was racking up 70-80 tackles like Polamalu does now. He can still play the run and actually is again arguably a bigger hitter than the biggest hitter ever in Polamalu (as some media and Steeler fans make him out to be). The fact that he has more career forced fumbles (10) than Polamalu (8) backs this up.

The bottom line is these are two fantastic players, both top 20 players in the entire league. But the fact that these talking heads at ESPN all felt Troy was the unanimous #1 is a travesty and insulting to Ed's incredible career. What's new other than Ravens getting snubbed in popularity contests though, right? I'm used to it by now.

EDIT: 1,000 posts for me! nice to do it while defending my favorite player :)

These videos answer the question perfectly.

Troy

Ed

As you can see, both excel in their own ways.

It was wasn't it Warden, haha.

Everything I said was true analysis though. I know you, unlike some Steelers fans, have just as much respect for Ed's game and career as I have for Troy's. Two future Hall of Famers here and that's all that really counts I think. People can sit around and argue one player is better than another with all the greats, every point can seemingly be trumped by another, haha.

I can argue all day about those two as well, but you are right; I have nothing but respect for Ed Reeds game. I liked your 1a and 1b comment and I agree whole-heartedly. the both of them are beasts.

Like fly said, there isn't a fan of either team that would take the other over their own. I count as one of them, I would never choose Troy over Ed, but that's not to say that I don't think he's a tremendous player.

That post was an excellent argument Corvus. I could not begin to describe how much I'd love to hit some of the analysts with those figures.

Agreed, I just didn't get the 17(Troy) to 1(Ed) votes for DPOY. Both players put up great numbers while missing games or being hurt.

Let's Put it this way:

Ravens fans will say Ed is better, Steelers fans will say Troy is better but we all know that they are just Equal Players which is why I agree with the post that said they are 1A and 1B.

Listen those idiots at ESPN are wrong all the time, let me put it like this players would pick Ed Reed over Troy, so would most coaches...Ed Reed at his best was heads and shoulders above the rest, Troy at his best and its debatable who is #1 and Reeds not even completely healthy...may never be again

Ed Reed was ranked on the top 100 of all time, not sure if Troy was...if he was I know it was higher than Troy. Ed will be a no brain HoFer...as will Troy..maybe

Not surprising, it was chosen by bloggers and they will NEVER pick a Raven over a Steeler. Not only that but the fact that Troy has rings influences their decision as well. They are both tremendous players and are definitely head and shoulders above the rest, so they can say what they want cuz us Ravens fans know the truth.

I dont think Troy was ranked at all..is that correct or did I just forget him?

Still thats just another opinion poll, Ed Reed is a gamechanger, they make the case for Troy because he tackles more and he's more dynamic? Ed Reed can do it all too, its based on the system he's in, if they dont ask him to come up and defend the run its not his fault, he's so good at ballhawking they just leave him back their to lock down the secondary.
