Show these guys in Baltimore what real athletes can do. Bruce Smith, Michael Vick, Lawrence Taylor just to name a few. We don't play third string our whole lives we play against the best in each other, whoever makes it out of Virginia on top is a beast at the next level.
Mike Vick's only had one good year as a passer -- every other good season he's had, has been as a glorified running back. It's almost an insult to Bruce Smith and Lawrence Taylor to put Vick in the same sentence as them. I'd hardly consider Vick a beast when the position he plays is QB, not Swiss Army Knife.

I don't really understand the Troy Smith comparisons. The dude has a stronger arm, better accuracy, a better ability to read defenses imo, and won't yell at coaches or complain about not starting like Troy did.

There is also the fact that he is taller than Troy and is a much better athlete.

Personally, I think why some are lower than others on Taylor is because he's been branded as a running QB. He has consistently improved in every area of his game (accuracy, decision making, and especially reading defenses) every year he has played at VT and brings a Rothlisberger-esque ability to escape sacks and extend plays (although obviously Taylor does it with his natural elusiveness in the pocket and speed while Ben does it with size and strength).

And there is obviously the ability to run that increases Taylors worth as a passer. A huge problem last year was the lack of separation our WR's got and nobody being open... if a lane was open this would allow Taylor to actually pick up some yards instead of getting sacked or throwing the ball away.

In my opinion, if he keeps progressing the way he has in college (where he broke virtually every passing record including those set by Vick himself) Michael Vick last year is this kid's roof. Its obviously unlikely he reaches that skill level, but the fact that its possible makes me love him so much more as a prospect, especially considering his height advantage on Vick will help him in the passing game.

This is not mentioning the possible value he can have at the WR position, where we have been drooling for speed and at this point are depending on one unproven rookie who many on this board have said is not even a legit deep threat and whose track speed doesnt translate onto the field. I'm rooting for Torrey but there is no doubt Taylor could help provide that speed if he switched to WR.

I like taylor as a qb, and when we were up in the 6th, i knew we were going to pick him bc our FO made it pretty clear that the draft would be a good place to look for a back up since mark bulger is prolly going to get signed somewehre else. he can actually throw and i think he will put in the work to get the most out of himself at the next level. He wants to play qb which is a good thing. I think he is going to be better than troy smith, like ed.s52 said, he has a stronger arm, hes more accurate, hes faster, and taller. He is a smart kid too and i'm sure hes going to be a sponge his first couple of years and step in and help out when he has to. Glad we picked him over mcelroy, i never really liked him at alabama

I like what I'm hearing about the kid thus far. I haven't had time to sit down and really watch footage of him, and I didn't follow him during his college days, but I'm optimistic that he has a lot of upside.

Like I said before, if he plays well, it's a win-win situation no matter what. There's no question that Flacco is the starter, but Taylor playing well as a backup means that the team has a great insurance policy and has a guy who could be used as a valuable trade chip later.

That was a cute comparison but the facts remain to be good at the Qb position for his style of play calls for the run and the pass. Why do you think all that other stuff is open because you have to worry about them both. When you are a defender you have to be worried about Vick at all times no matter where he is on the field that changes the game. It seems that everyone on these message boards don't appreciate a scrambling QB when they will be the future of the league.

Yes sir! the NFL is definately making the move from the more conventional"stationary" pocket-passing QB to the "dual-threat" QBs like Cam Newton and Tyrod Taylor and others. i can't wait!

A Dennis Dixon type of player. (Purple Punishment)

LOL - was my first thought, too. Troy Smith 2.0 (berad)

Hell most likely be our 3 string QB after free agency. Ozzie said they drafted him as a QB but I believe he would be good as a Brad Smith type of player. (dt23)

Are you kidding me? Lifetime backup right. Not good enough to start at the next level. Tidewater stand up!!!! Show these guys in Baltimore what real athletes can do. He has better tools than Smith does, but I dont think the Dixon comparison was that far off. Dixon has some good NFL tools.

And excuse you for naming 2 of the top 10 NFL players of all time...and then throwing Vick's name in there.

It is definitely shaping up that way.....I mean look at the past SB Champs; Rodgers, Roethlisberger, Manning, Brady, Brees, the other Manning - all stellar scrambling QBs!!

Hahahaha....you're a riot, dude!

No, no its not.....it will always be dominated by the pocket passer that can pick apart a secondary. Has been since the inception of the game.

What honestly makes the few (two) of you think this?

Rodgers
Brees
Manning
Manning (other one)
Roethlisberger
Brady

See the similarity? (Hint, they were all the QB on the winning team that played in the _______?)

Eventually, it's going to change though with how big and fast and athletic D-lineman and LB's are getting and I feel a great pass rusher has the edge over a great blocker ( O-lineman ) any day of the week. QBs thats coming in that can scramble now is still fairly new compared to the existence of the league. Most guys had to convert to WR or RB but now they are starting to take a stand and say they can make it as a QB in this league.

Also, Brees, Big Ben, and Rodgers I define as hybrid QB's b/c they can scramble and they can stay in the pocket so you can't just define them as pocket passers!

Yes let's replace our three year quarterback who took us to the playoffs all three years with someone that has no experience in the NFL. I sure don't see a risk in that

The NFL is dominated by pocket passers. Peyton Manning and Tom Brady are two of the slowest guys in the game, but they are also the two best QBs in the league because they hang in the pocket, see the field, and make the throw instead of trying to make a break for it. A guy who can extend a play with his feet is good, like Rodgers or Roethlisberger, but a guy who wants too much to run the ball is a hindrance to his team because his line doesn't know where to block.

Rodegers and Brees are certainly not "hybrids." Rodgers can move a little bit. For a QB, he's pretty athletic. However, the key to that statement is "for a QB." QBs make plays with their arms.

All of those guys revolutionized their positions on the football field. Vick did the same. If you ask anyone who is the best scrambling Quarterback they have ever seen, it will be Vick. He paved the way for other athletes to play the position with the same style and be successful. Told you and your buddies on here, a new day is coming, get ready for the scramblers to emerge as the best in the league.

So false. Randall Cunningham was doing it before Vick was even in middle school.

To add to that, they are longest tenured under the same system. Patriots stockpile first round talent. How many top tier players do they have on that team of so called nobodies. Peyton However, I respect at the position but even he can't say that it hurt to have Marvin Harrison , Reggie Wayne, Dallas Clark and James all those years. Patriots are a cheating organization, I have no respect for Tom, the Patriots or their accomplishments.

They all played in the Tidewater area. All of them are from Virginia. There is the comparison. Im glad you mentioned some of the greatest players of all time, now you know what the Hampton roads guys are use to seeing as far as talent.

Another great correlation with those two QB's is they normally have Top 5 pass blocking O-line but as soon as their O-line doesn't hold up, look how their play fare then. Look how the Ravens made Tom and Co. look a few years ago in the playoffs, Tom looked like he was a bottom tier QB.

Also, saying Rodgers can move a little bit is a big understatement, the guy can move great and it saves him alot of times.

And even though they can "scramble", they are not in the category the few here are talking about. They are saying that the Vicks, Dixons, T Smiths, Cunninghams, etc of the world will/are taking over the game and that is clearly not true at all.

Do you pay attention to the draft and player personnel at all? Pats almost NEVER use their first round draft and usually build with what they have. As for Manning, no matter who they plug in that system, Manninng makes them look like Pro Bowl caliber WRs and TEs. There have been years where no one even knows who anyone is on his team.

I don't think anyone is arguing that Vick is a crazy insane athlete, but just not a top 3 QB like some here are trying to argue. Its quite comical actually. He has a career completion percentage of 55%....ha! The 2006 season that a few keep mentioning was a stellar performance of 2,400 yards and a 52% completion percentage. I know I know....the argument is "stats don't you the whole story". Okay, but they sure help! Statistically Manning is a great QB and he IS! Statistically A Peterson is a great RB and he IS! Statistically Calvin Johnson is a great WR and he IS! Someone please show me a player that has great stats and is actually not a good player.

seriously though...the few (two) of us are not restricted to just liking or preferring the "stationary" pocket-passer! neither are we (two of us) trying to make EVERY QB in the league the same! to us (two) there is NOTHING wrong with a QB that can make reads and accurate passes from the pocket AND have the ability to move the pocket with his legs or scrambling ability in order to give his receivers more time to get open or, to break off a huge run himself. that's called being a "dual-threat" if you are wondering.

and here's a hint for you....Rodgers and Big Ben are not merely pocket-passers but scramblers as well. umm...they (scramblers) both won the SB doing so.

I cant wait to see what he has to offer. Im hoping that he learns alot from Flacco. Atleast now if Flacco goes down we have a cheap option that could still help us win games. I dont think we should try an the trick plays until he atleast gets up to speed with the nfl game.

naw! no one is saying that s52. lol!

i think that is why sooo many cats in here have a hard time admitting the upside of a young QB cause they "assume" that just because some of us are excited about Tyrod Taylor being drafted as a QB for the Ravens means that we AUTOMATICALLY want him to step in and take Joe's job.

that is not what i am saying!

How is this post not original in refuting the ridiculousness of others post on here? Did anyone else use examples (specific) to show that the pocket passer is, has been and will always rule the position?

Nice try trying to add Rodgers and Ben into your side of tscramblete! They are not equal to the few scrambling QBs you and others (one) have mentioned. They avoid pressure, but do not look to scramble.

Can't wait to here this "cats" reply....
