When Free Agency Finally Begins

Antwan Barnes is a free agent. We never shouldve traded him.
Wouldnt be the worst idea. Trade him for a 7th rounder, then pick him up on the free market. Gotta love that, however, he is not going to solve our pass rushing woes IMO.

We can't afford to pay Hali what he deserves, and he's probably going to stay with the Midwestern Patriots. If they got a real quarterback instead of Matt Cassel, they'd actually be a deadly team. KC is definitely a team on the rise, and is not a bad team to play for.

I think he's an excellent game manager, but nothing more. I'm a huge fan of Jamaal Charles so I really respect the Chiefs, but as we all saw from last years playoff game, they're just not ready to win a Super Bowl. But they do have some young, up and coming players to watch out for.

Donte Whitner is pretty much the only free agent I'd like to sign. This year's class is most likely going to be terrible, so there won't be much talent to choose from. We'd be better off perusing the UDFA pool for a pass rusher.

I could see these events happening on this upcoming free agency.

1) The Longest Wait Ever
Nnamdi Asomugha is going to go visit a bunch of possible suitors (Eagles, Steelers, Packers, Ravens, Bucs, Cowboys, Texans) and take his time to see what team will give him a comfortable contract ($10 million+ per season multi-year contract) and the best chance to win the Super Bowl. I don't see him doing what Julius Peppers did on his first team visit, where Chicago just made it rain so much, that Peppers had a hard time thinking on going to visit the next team.

2) Pass Rushers Frenzy!
Charles Johnson, Jason Babin, Ray Edwards, Mathias Kiwanuka, and Cullen Jenkins are going to get a lot of phones call at Midnight because every team knows that you have to go after the QBs to survive in this league. The problem for us, is that most of these guys are 4-3 DEs, not 3-4 OLBs. Therefore, our quest for pass rushers will be limited.

3) Quick, let's go raid the Ravens before Ozzie wakes up
With more than 1/3 of the Ravens 2010 roster hitting the market. Ozzie Newsome is going to lose a lot of sleep and going to have a hard time trying to call his former players with all the phone lines jammed because there are 31 other callers on the other line. It will be a sad sight for us Ravens fan because we going to have to part ways with a lot of players that we loved and cherished. Good thing, we picked up a lot of players from the draft to replenish some of this expected loss.

I can see:
1) Jared Gaither will be monitored closely by the Lions, Bills, and Redskins
2) Our CB Trio, Chris Carr, Josh Wilson, and Fabian Washington are going to be receiving offers that are beyond their perceived value. Heck, Carr's value might even reach the $7 million mark. I could see the Lions end up with at least one of them.
3) Why get a FB, when you can get a stud RB also. Le'Ron McClain's value is going to spike with Dolphins and Bengals looking to restore their Ground Game.
4) Playmaking Safeties are always scarced, but that doesn't stop the Cowboys making it rain for Dawan Landry, who has established to be one of the better playmaking strong safeties.
5) Marc Bulger... Need I to explain more
6) The NTs are not for sale or maybe... One of the deepest spots in our 2010 roster was our great and big Nose Tackles. We all know Terrence Cody and Haloti Ngata are off-limits. However, our other NTs in Kelly Talavou, Brandon McKinney, and even Kelly Gregg could get some interest from around the league, especially the Redskins and Texans.
7) Odd man out! It's weird that our three ILBs that worked alongside Ray Lewis are free agents and if I must say who the odd man out will be, it has to be Tavares Gooden. However, everyone knows that ILBs trained by Ray Lewis are hot commodity (ex: Bart Scott and Adalius Thomas) Ozzie might see that these undrafted guys like Jameel McClain and Dannell Ellerbe might actually come along with a good draft pick. Looks like we have to find more undrafted ILBs to groom.

4)The Quest for QB!
Yes, the draft is over, yet some teams decided that the free market QBs are better investment than those rookie QBs. Arizona called dibs on Kevin Kolbs. Denver is contemplating on shipping Orton or Tebow. Also, Marc Bulgers' name is going around like hot cake because everyone else are basically failed starters or career back-ups. By the end of the day, I expect Miami and Arizona to finally get the QBs.

5) Over the Hill and Underpopulated
If you're a free agent this years, there's a 75% chance that you are past your prime. Every team knows that this draft is probably the weakest because all the really good players are either signed, franchised, or hidden away by the 6 year rule. Of course, there are a selected few who are considered good players, but there' not enough of them to go around.

6) The Unprovens will sell out more quickly than the vets
Also, since the undrafted free agents have to wait to sign with any team along with the free agents. I assume teams will hoard these college prospect faster than signing any of the veterans of the league.

All-in-all, if we get Nnamdi Asomugha, I will say that this signing will cancel out all the feeding frenzies on Ravens players.

Oz has said he wants a FB, a veteran QB and a pass-rusher in the FA. So... yeah. Info.

I'll take Ray Edwards and Kiwinuka. Nothing else out there worth getting, unless Nnamdi decides to become an intern at the castle.

Jason Babin anyone? 6-3 260, 12.5 sacks last year. I think he can play 3-4 OLB. Dude may be old, and he'll be a band-aid more than a long term fix, but will be significantly cheaper than anyone else who has 10+ sacks.

Two free agents that I would really like to sign are Michael Bush and Todd Collins.

Imagine a backfield with a duo of 245lb Bush, who gets 70% of his yardage after contact and Ray Rice, who will probably break 50-60 tackles a year.

Collins is a veteran who knows our system back and forth, being Al Saunders' errand boy for 10+ years. I think he would be our de facto QB coach. Doesn't really have the physical tools anymore and may retire. He would only be QB3 on our roster, but I think he can provide valuable advice and guidance to Flacco and Taylor.

Do you think we would pick him back up?

I wouldn't be against it. He already knows the system and could easily be the guy opposite Suggs bringing the pass rush.
I think we should pick him up. Like you said, he knows the system, and he can contribute quickly without taking a long time to learn the plays.

Hello fellow Flock;

The draft turned out different than I expected, the jury is out on how these pieces will impact out squad... What concerns me is the lack of attention to the trenches... I trust in OZ so Im expecting him to upgrade some key positions once free agency (God Willing) begins... Id like to hear some feed back about these free agents I would like to see in Black and Purple;

Offensive Tackles;
Tyson Clabo- Falcons
Jammal Brown- Redskins
Doug Free- Cowboys
Jarred Gaither- Ravens (this is my first pick)

Defensive Ends;
Charles Johnson- Panthers
Cullen Jenkins- Packers
Ray Edwards- Vikings
Mathias Kiwanuka- Giants

Linebackers;
Paul Posluzny- Bills
Chad Greenway- (My favorite- he had 92 tackles in 9 games!)
Tamba Hall- Chiefs
Personally I would love to have Tamba Hali out of KC but I don't think theres any way that the chiefs will let him go and with the sucess that he has had there I don't see any reason for him to leave either. Mathias Kiwanuka or cullen jenkins would be great pickups along the DL to go with Ngata and Cody or Cory Redding who played very well towards the end of last year.

I wouldnt mind Cullen Jenkins, but I would prefer Ray Edwards or Charles Johnson to be signed and used as an OLB across from Suggs.

We don't need Jenkins, that's for sure. If not a pass rushing OLB, then forget it. I would take a chance on Lawson, new change of venue and he probably could be a decent pass rusher, maybe a gem. He has all the tools to do so and he plays the run aight and is good when dropping back, could make our D even more chaotic.

Yeah I think it would be a project worth undertaking. 4-3 DEs out of college often play in the 3-4 as an OLB or ILB. These guys have NFL experience so I'm sure that it would not take to long for them to learn the position.

Of those tackles available, i don't think Gaither should be your first pick, he should be your last resort. Gaither had to enter the the supplemental draft and become a 5th round pick for a reason...because he had issues. Plenty of players with issues drop to 5th round value and then prove themselves to become pro bowl players (e.g Brandon Marshall), but it should be noted that Gaither has never even become a pro bowl player after all this time. His college coaches warned us that he was a head case, he doesn't come to work, he is always out of shape, and always getting injured. On top of all this his agent is Drew Rossenhaus, the man is running around calling his client an elite LT and wanting big time money...no thanks. I realize our OL is utter crap without Gaither, but signing Gaither doesn't mean we are even going to have a good OL 50% of the time anyway, so as bad as it is its actually better we move this team forward at RT/LT with another person.

I think Jammal Brown would be a solid signing. He is a natural LT...a pro bowler every year when he is playing LT. The skins did what they do best, sign a good player and then crap all over them. Brown playing RT for them last year is not indicative of his ability. And this would allow us to move Oher to RT.

Tyson Clabo isn't a pro bowler but he is a pretty good RT, it wouldn't be a bad signing either.

Nothing will stop the Cowboys from re-signing Doug Free. He is their LT and they just drafted a RT to patch up their crappy OL, i don't think they are going to go backwards.

Charles Johnson is a 43 DE, he doesn't fit our system and we already have a player like him (Paul Kruger) not working out for us...same goes for Ray Edwards and Kiwanuka.

Don't think the Packers choose not to re-sign Jeinkins, they have no replacement for him and he is part of the team that won the SB, they will need him again. If he hits FA... he is 30 so i don't think we will be in the hunt for him with Harbaughs "dislike" for older players...

Posluzny is literally the only thing the Bills D (and maybe their entire team) has going for it right now, i think its safe to assume they re-sign him.

Greenway is a natural 43 OLB, i don't think he would make a good ILB for us.

Hali is the best player on the Cheifs D, i don't realistically see the cheifs not re-signing him, and if they do, the ravens have to outbid a lot of other teams, and i would much rather have Kindle who actually brings us speed.
