Lockout Back On After 8Th Circuit Grants Stay

97 posts in this topic

All this litigation and lack of movement has confused me. Which ruling would be most favorable to us fans, the most likely to sort the entire CBA solution out soonest?

There is no ruling, Judge Kermit Bye is encouraging both sides to continue working toward an agreement in the coming days and to settle this themselves. Bye has also said that his ruling will come in "due time"(AKA he wants to see them work it out) and that "neither side will like his ruling."

Side Note: How do we go from Judge Susan Nelson to a judge named after a Frog from the Muppets?

More Secret Meetings!!!

http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2011/06/07/nfl-players-continue-not-so-secret-talks-on-tuesday/
Breer reports that talks resumed today at an undisclosed location.
Talks are expected to continue over the next couple days. Ok so if talks keep up than maybe whoever predicted end of June or beginning of July may be right.

People who attended these talks: De Smith, Select Owners, Roger Goodell and Judge Boylan.

Framework for new CBA could come in 2 weeks!

http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2011/06/11/framework-for-agreement-could-come-in-two-weeks/
Daniel Kaplan of SportsBusiness Journal reports that the the “expectation is for a framework agreement in about two weeks.”

None of it may mean much in isolation, but taken together it suggests that teams are now operating under the assumption that the full season — with preseason and training camp — will unfold as scheduled.
Maybe this Lockout is getting closer to ending after all!

I can just get the feeling that it is going to end soon, and not just because of your article you just posted. The sign of meetings coming and going without any serious conflict leads me to think that they are making progressions. I don't know what I would do if I couldn't lose in fantasy football again this year.

Yeah same here, I think I get that feeling whether in two weeks or in July we'll be able to finally see Free Agency play out and see what the teams will really be looking like for this season.

This is getting ever more positive. I still think they should have started with this attitude though. They would have saved a lot of time, money and popularity.

Exactly. Someone should have locked them all in a room with a fire in it and not unlocked the door until there was agreement.
Seriously though, I think getting it done this late (assuming it gets done with minimal disruption to the actual schedule) was a bad move on the part of everyone involved. I think and kinda hope there will be some backlash for their apparent disregard for the interest of the fans. Everyone's known for so long that the end of the CBA was coming and yet the prevailing response has been sheer apathy.

I see what your saying, but I don't think they were intentionally trying to hurt the fans. I mean they are trying to work something out before training camps start so the fan won't be hurt by this. I kind of look at this situation like when a player and the Ravens are disagreeing on a contract. Both sides look bad, but once it is settled and everyone gets back on the field then it is forgotten about. At least, I hope it will be like that.

I agree. There was nothing to be gained by going through the process that they did (still are doing) rather than sitting down and coming up with a deal which is for the good of everybody. Instead they decided to try and wage a war of popularity which is ironic as the whole process made them less popular in the eyes of the fan.

I don't think they were intentionally trying to hurt fans, but they surely must have known that what they were doing would have ended up at this. They could have made things much more simple and effective by negotiating, not trying to outdo the other and gain an upper hand through court.

I think that they will for the most part be forgiven if we miss no proper football, but there will always be that afterthought from the fans about how they've all made themselves look greedy and egotistical.

well from what I heard the NFL is talking of Suing the Lawyers of both parties .
From who and why? I actually have to think it's a smart move, I mean look at how much progress they are making in just a short period of time WITHOUT the Lawyers, so you could say the Lawyers were the problem all along.

oh ok. Still, I think it's interesting because what would they be suing them for, they could sue for hurting negotations and almost preventing no season. I mean like I said, look at how well the talks are going now that Lawyers aren't present.

Major Update on Negotiations:

They are currently meeting in Maryland on Tuesday & Wednesday to continue labor talks.

http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2011/06/14/labor-negotiations-taking-place-in-maryland-tuesday-and-wednesday/

Also, the Lawyers are back in the negotiations but we can only hope that it is to look over the new CBA before a deal is agreed to.

http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2011/06/14/labor-negotiations-taking-place-in-maryland-tuesday-and-wednesday/

According to PFT a deal could be reached in 2-3 weeks!

http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2011/06/14/report-deal-could-come-within-two-or-three-weeks/
Mark Maske of the Washington Post reports that sources on both sides of the dispute said Tuesday that a deal could be struck in the next two to three weeks.
This has to be the most positive news so far in this lockout.

Even more positive news.... according to Mike Freeman of CBS Sports Negotiations are "80-85 percent" complete. Now we see why Lawyers are involved, Freeman is also saying that attorneys have began reviewing proposals.

http://rotoworld.com/headlines/nfl/205458/report-negotiations-80-85-percent-complete
Both sides are reportedly making "major concessions," and attorneys have begun reviewing proposals. Participants are now canceling vacations scheduled for the next few weeks because a deal could be finished "within a matter of days."
Adam Schefter confirmed what Mike Freeman said about both sides getting close to a deal when he tweeted the following:

"After taking off past two rounds of talks in Chicago and on Long Island, lawyers back involved in these meetings. This time it's good."

"NFL owners and players' negotiating teams are meeting today in Wash DC area. Both sides in deal-making mode."

For me, just the smell of it makes me sick, so I always avoid going around Seafood.

I just hope Roger and the rest of people at the meetings like it enough that it helps them get a deal done and we can have Free Agency in a couple weeks.

Just as quickly as the Lawyers returned... they have been kicked out once again. According to Adam Schefter, the lawyers almost "blew up the process" on Tuesday. In fact DeMaurice Smith had to instruct lawyers Jeffery Kessler and Jim Quinn to "stand down."

http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2011/06/15/the-lawyers-get-the-boot-again/

Note to NFL, your making good progress without the lawyers so keep them away and get a deal done.

He probably has some amazing App on his phone that allows him to pick a location and see video and hear audio of that location, I mean there is an app for everything else.

Or maybe he is the fly on the wall.... things that make you go hmmmmm.

The Longer this Lockout goes on.... every day there is no deal, furthers my point that Roger Goodell shouldn't be the Commissioner of the NFL.

But they say they only need 25 owners to approve the CBA. So hopefully this isn't too much of a problem
