The Steelers And Their Draft Pick

38 posts in this topic

Cameron Heyward on the line with Keisel, Smith, Hampton, and Hood.

Is anyone else nervous over the state of our OL thinking of that front against us twice a season every season?

FlaccoFlicker and me were texting back and forth the entire round and when that call came up we both hit each other with basically the same thought: our OL is going to get MAULED....

I'm nervous about the Ravens offensive line facing anyone.

Third and one? -_-

Good point. VERY good point.

Hood is trash, I don't see a lot of upside with him. If Heyward learns to stuff the run and develop a motor we could have problems.

Yeah, the thought is quite scary, but not as much as the thought that they could have had Jimmy Smith. Him on Pittsburgh's D would have been an absolute nightmare for us.

If Yanda is re-signed and Birk can hold up, I won't be worried. Heyward obviously wasn't there but the Ravens pounded the Steelers on the ground in '09 in both meetings and I think they can do it again if the o-line is solidified.

I'm not that concerned about Heyward on the Steelers line at all. I agree with ED20, if our line remains healthy, we'll be fine. It wasn't too long ago that our line was considered one of the top offensive lines in the league. Unfortunately, an injury plagued line with Chester and Moll at right guard isn't that same line.

LOVE this pick! Even more when I read how excited Kevin Colbert was about him. And Blood, Ziggy Hood is not trash. Not sure why you think so.

I think as always the Steelers draft well. Im not worried because any given sunday but we better get some Oline help in this draft. If Gaither comes back healthy we should be fine cuz Chester is no help on the line. I wish Moll would have got to play more but oh well.

I actually didn't think this was a good pick. Obviously I'm in the minority but I don't think Heyward will pan out to be anything more than an average player.

Our 3-4 DE's are always unheralded. Save maybe Aaron Smith who is the protege' for that position.

Most 3-4 DEs are since they don't generate much stats. I don't think Heyward is an upgrade for the Steelers D-line (then again, did they need an upgrade?). He'd be one of the better backups in the league, but I'm not seeing any Pro-Bowls out of him.

He's the future, not depth. What 3-4 DE's DO make it to the Pro-Bowl? Aaron Smith has been snubbed his whole career. They don't get stats, they're there to eat blocks. He's a perfect fit for us. Kevin Colberts enthusiasm other that pick confirms it for me.

Well I see him as depth. Again, I realize people are high on him, but people are high on ALL first rounders (except QB). That's why they're taken in the first round. I'm just guessing here like everyone else. From what I've heard though, Heyward is a good run stuffer who is versatile, but doesn't really excel in any area. That to be says backup.

I think this was a solid pick but I do question this pick for 1 Reason, Derek Sherrod. Steelers need to address the offensive line and improve it, and Sherrod was there for them and they passed on him for someone who probably won't play, as opposed to Sherrod who could have came in at RT immediately and played from day 1.

Hopefully the Steelers draft an offensive lineman with their second round pick tonight and a Corner in the third because if they don't their offensive line is still going to be bad and expect more QBs to rip them apart the way Aaron Rodgers and Tom Brady did if they don't get a Corner.

That to me says "Steeler." I guess just be glad the Ravens didn't draft him then. Personally, I think it's a steal and I love it.

Don't be surprised if we move up to grab a CB in the 2nd round actually. We're okay at o-line this year. We could just use some depth and a future prospect. CB however is our #1 need. There just wasn't one available that warranted the 31st overall pick and they were in love with Cam (didn't think he'd fall to them).

So far, I'm only excited about Heyward (DT), Gilbert (OL), and Brown (DB)... But I think of those 3, Gilbert has the best chance to start, with Brown next.

Overall Here is how the Steelers did:

1st Round: Cameron Heyward DE Ohio State

2nd Round: Marcus Gilbert OL Florida

3rd Round: Curtis Brown CB Texas

4th Round: Cortez Allen CB Citadel

5th Round: Chris Carter OLB Fresno State

6th Round: Keith Williams OL Nebraska

7th Round: Baron Batch RB Texas Tech

I hate to rate their draft higher but I just have to, I give them an A for what they did.

I'm convinced Ozzie wanted Chris Carter. In the post draft press conference he even mentioned how a pass rusher they liked got picked 2 spots before them. I read somewhere that if you love Von Miller you will at least like Chris Carter. He could develop into a nice 3-4 pass rusher. So we settled for McPhee.

Well maybe "trash" was a bit harsh, he'll never come close to Aaron Smith though.

Colbert is the best GM no one talks or knows about.
By a country mile. The earliest he ever gets to pick is in the bottom half of round one, normally around the 28-32 mark, yet he grabs a plethora of talented prospects annually.

It irks me.

No it wouldn't. I'm not convinced Mike is has his brothers talent. We DID however get Maurkices Best friend and former teammate at Tackle.

Our Oline wont get mauled by Heyward unless Chester is playing, and with Chester playing Im pretty sure theres people on this forum who could beat up on Chester in the trenches. Heywards pass rush doesnt scare me that much, its basically a bull rush which Yanda should be able to handle inside. Heyward should make it tough to run on them again for another 8 years as long as they find another NT when Hampton leaves. Carter was a good pick for the future like Worilds was, Gilbert was a pretty good pick as well. Curtis Brown is interesting, he had a high grade before this season and played poorly at times getting outplayed by Williams as well as Chykie at times. I do find it interesting that the Steelers have used two first round picks in the last 2 years at the 34 DE spot, you dont see that often.

Again, I think the important thing to remember is that in a 3-4 defense, the DL is not there to get a pass rush or sacks. Sure, they will from time-to-time, but they are there to eat up blocks for our linebackers. And the Steelers number one priority is almost always to stop the run.

You are correct Sir:
"Then, the Ravens had their eye on Fresno State outside linebacker Chris Carter, whom they interviewed at the NFL scouting combine. However, he was picked by the Pittsburgh Steelers in the fifth round two picks before their pair of compensatory selections."
