I can't wait to see this kid play. The thought of having one side of the field locked down at all times is purely awesome.
It really will be...think about it. If he lines up on the number #1 reciever he'll be on the oposite side of ed reed most of the time. Which side do you throw too!?

I know he's a rookie, but come on only 11 QB completions to players covered by Smith in his final 2 seasons. That's increcidible. With some minor technique work on some of the areas mentioned he has a legitimate shot at becoming a "Shutdown CB"

Great post. I have been looking for a good analysis on his match up with Green .
I absolutely love the last part of the article too:

Sorry for the Double Post

Just to let you know the majority of the time Green was covered by Smith's conterpart Jalil Brown but he did an excellent job preventing the TD in the endzone that was intended for Green.

The Georgia coaches at half started moving Green away from Smith to avoid that matchup that Green was struggling with.

Isnt that what the article said?

To add to your point, just look at what Devin McCourty did for the Patriots in his rookie season. I'm not positive if he started the season as their #1 or not, but by probably mid-season he was consistently going up against their opponents' top WR's and doing a pretty good job as well. I'm extremely confident that Jimmy can come in and do the same kind of thing for us, except better.

I'd put Jimmy on opposing team's #1 WRs. He'll take some lumps but he doesn't lack confidence and the experience will help.

To add on what you said, I think one of his greatest assests is his ability to bait a QB, and his recovery speed. This kid is the total package.
Wow Smith baiting QBs, on one side of the field and Reed either lurking on the other side or over the top of the defense.

If the Ravens and either find another really strong pass rusher, or manufacture enough pass rush over the next couple years, this defense might start to get back to that dominance we're used too. Top 10 is cool, but #1 without a doubt is better.

I loved when Coach Pagano said in that video that Jimmy's going to be covering their best guy every week (aka AJ Green, Mike Wallace, whoever the Browns throw out there, etc.)... I cannot wait!

Question: Would you rather Smith shut down one half of the field like Revis and Aso do most of the time or have Smith go 1-on-1 with their #1 all game?
I'd rather have Jimmy lock down a teams #1. There is nothing more demoralizing then to have what you consider you best WR completely taken out of a game.

If QBs choose to avoid Jimmy while he's locking down a #1, that's already a win for the defense. With the 2nd and 3rd WRs you could play bracket coverage on them if you don't like the one on one matchups. However if Ed Reed is lurking over top of that bracket coverage, most QBs wouldn't even think about throwing the ball in that direction on their best day.

If and once Jimmy Smith realizes his potential at the NFL level, there will be a lot of teams who throw to TEs and RBs because Smith and Reed in the same secondary will just seem unfair.

I don't like the fact that we're so quick to put Smith up against top receivers. NFL QB's love to take advantage of inexperienced CB's. We should know that better than anyone; remember how the Jets rookie CB Kyle Wilson looked against veteran WR's Housh and Boldin in our season opener last season. Lets not give Peyton Manning anymore advantages over us when we play this season.

This is a nice mindset and goal for Jimmy to strive for but i believe it's a little over the top to think he'll have that great an impact from the get-go.

Well, it is sort of a high risk, high reward type of deal possibly. His confidence can be shot or and can shoot out the ceiling depending on how he do which I think he will do fine. He will have his ruff moments possibly but I feel the good will outweigh the bad tremendously. I actually like that the organization being this high on him and playing besides Ed and Ray can only make his confidence better.Almost any other team and I would be worried of an organization putting so much faith and pressure on a rookie but Ed and Ray makes it pan out right.

I honestly think Jimmy Smith was the most pro ready corner in this draft.

I also think he's going to be the best corner we've ever had.

it's not really that black and white. Yea Coach Chuck told him to get ready to be on teams #1 WR all the time, but it's more like a........Hey have you butt ready to come in and compete because were not taking baby steps with you. We feel that you are a really good young CB with the potential to be great, so know we have great expectations of you.

Jimmy will get his butt whipped in Training Camp by Boldin and Mason. I can't really see him matching up with any other WRs in practice. Those guys will battle and battle hard.

If Jimmy proves he's up to the competition and he handles himself well in practice and preseason, then he'll probably be matched up on Hines Ward game 1(Webby will continue to match up with Wallace).

If Jimmy struggles to adjust in camp then he'll be taken slowly, he won't just be pushed into the fire.

So Coach Chuck telling Jimmy he'll be on the #1 from day one is more like, that's what he expects from Jimmy, if and only if he proves he can handle it. Also remember this, Chuck was our secondary coach, so if nothing else, he should know how to handle Jimmy's on field talent.

Considering how well he played vs. AJ green i actually think Jimmy will start against most of the best on the other team.

Besides if you look at who we have to play most of the number 1's are physical players, so it's not like we can really match up with other Db's (besides wilson if he's still here).

And I think we'll give him some help, i think our other DB's and Landry can take care of the other side.

normally I'd agree about tempering expectations for a rookie, but Jimmy is a rare talent. I'm very confident that he'll adjust quickly and be a stud from day one.

How great would it be for Jimmy to have a late fourth quarter INT that closes out a Ravens victory over the Steelers. Or better yet a pick 6 that seals the deal.
