Actually, the guy I keep hearing the most is C-Mac. Who I think, BTW, was better than Revis is.
I heard Nnamdi Asomugha a lot and the numbers between the 2 are shockingly similar.

Here's a part of a article from the Milwaukee-Wisconsin Journal Sentinel.

"The physical parallels between Asomugha, a perennial Pro Bowl cornerback for the Oakland Raiders, and Smith are stunning.

Each stands 6 feet 2 1/2 inches and weighs 210 pounds, their 40-yard dash times were within 0.02 of each other, their scores on the Wonderlic intelligence test were within two points, and their vertical and broad jumps were almost identical.

"I like the comparison," Smith said in February at the combine. "I think I have better ball skills than he does, though."

The dramatic difference in testing was Smith's 24-16 margin in repetitions on the bench press".

Here's the rest of the article if you're interested.

I'd like to know what team agreed to a trade but didn't call it in. I'm thinking Chicago wanted to trade ahead of KC to get Baldwin. Don't think Ozzie will be dealing with that team again.

I love the pick too, but I will say this. If it wasn't Smith, it would have been either Hayward or Wilkerson. Both went to two teams we will be battling for Conference supremacy for years to come. I really hope it works out because I would hate for Hayward to become a beast and we could have prevented the Squeelers from getting him.
Yea but the steelers would have took smith.. they still need help at corner.

You seriously don't think NFL caliber passers aren't going to test the rookie cornerback? Why wouldn't he wanna work towards being a complete player? C'mon man..
They're not going to throw at him if he's right on someone. Besides, if he really can cover a guy, let them throw all they want! If Smith can lock a guy down, I'm not gonna be a jerk and say he can't catch.

Yes, there is already a Smith thread on here, but that is just a general discussion of our pick. This thread is more like a negative because I'm here to question why we took Jimmy Smith.

I can honestly say I am not a fan of this pick. I don't know how Smith or any of our other CBs are supposed to try and cover AJ Green without a pass rush. When the Bengals took Green I thought great, yet another playmaker in the AFC North that the Ravens have to focus on. From there, everything seemed to fall into place for us to get Jimmy.

Obviously, the Ravens gave this pick plenty of thought. However, it seems to me like the organization was thinking the wrong thoughts. What killed our defense last year more than anything was the inability to stop the hurry up offense. One thing the hurry up is mean't to do is to slow down the front line and wear them out. Well it's not hard to wear out the ages of Gregg, Redding and even Lewis and JJ at LB. It also shouldn't be hard to wear out the size of Terrence Cody.

So instead of salvaging the front 7 and actually getting fresh legs in there, we assumed it wasn't necessary. Look I won't deny Jimmy's ability to play CB, nor his physicality. But one more CB won't do anything for us until we have a pass rush. We have good CBs, people outside of Bmore HIGHLY underestimate Wilson, Carr, Foxworth and Webb. However, too many times are they completely left out to dry by either a 3 or 4 man rush or an all out blitz that gets picked up.

It absolutely disgusted me when ESPN showed the list of our CBs last season by interceptions and they put Foxworth, Cary Williams and Fabian on the list all with zero. Let's see, Foxy missed the ENTIRE season with an ACL tear, Cary Williams saw next to nothing as far as playing time unless I missed something, and Fabian, even though has is actually really bad, he was almost non exsistent after the Bills game. That's 9 games right there with barely any of him, yet they still show the zero picks for a whole season. That was some mad disrespect on their part.

But another thing that made it bad for me was that we have other needs to fill like T, WR and pass rusher. Who was on the board at 27? Sherrod, Carimi, Torrey, Baldwin, Ayers and Jordan. Yet we bypassed all of them. Absolutely unbelievable. Yes, I know we'll address these needs with our other 8 picks as it stands right now, but still.

I hope I'm wrong about this whole thing. I obviously want Jimmy to be a success here. But with the possible character issues and the lack of pass rush, this seems destined to fail from my eyes. Another thing with character issues, we all know of the perception out there that Jimmy is a bad character, and guys like Ray and Suggs are not his father. I really don't think they'll be able to straighen him out in any way, if need be. They don't see him off the field, they don't own the guy.

Thoughts? Agreements? Disagreements?

It was reported on the NFL Network that the Bears wanted to trade up to select Gabe Carimi, because they thought the Chiefs would select him.

I actually wish the trade would have gone through because the Ravens would have picked up an extra pick and still been able to select Jimmy Smith more then likely.

In the end everybody got their guys, so no harm no foul.

La Canfora reported that the Bears were afraid that the Chiefs were gunning for Carimi, so they wanted to move up ahead of them. I'd guess when they figured out the Chiefs were going for Baldwin they felt free to throw us under the bus.

There are plenty of ways we could have went. After the lockout is over we are pretty thin at CB and this was a position of need for us. I would have liked us to get Bowers or Heyward but it didnt go that way. We got one of the top CBs of the draft, be happy

Haha, well let me be the first "anti-Jimmy Smith" board member to welcome you to the Ravens. I hope you learn some ball skillls and playmaking abiltity from Ed to go with the coverage, show us you were worth the pick and I'll be on your side for your career
Jimmy Smith has really good ball skills and play making ability. Does he have ED Reed type ability probably not right now, so there is plenty he can learn from ED, but he definitely has the ball skills and play making ability to make QBs pay.

I love this pick. In the draft video for Jimmy Smith they said he only allowed 11 completions in his last two seasons at Colorado. That's INSANE and he definitely IS the Shutdown CB we need.
Seriously, that is pretty impressive. I'm optimistic about Jimmy. My friend I was watching with made a comment when his off-the-field issues were brought up and how Kindle has panned out so far, but the Ravens are good at finding diamonds in the rough and maturing them. I think our vets will reign him in.

I too thought we could have made a trade with Chi, still have gotten J. Smith AND more picks in the later rounds (like we need more). I still hope we can get the other Smith..whats his first name? The WR from Maryland

Now that I know the trade to the Bears would have most likely still meant selecting Smith, I want to know who the player was that Ozzie "loved" in the draft......Smith?

Yup, cuz there will never be a point in his rookie season going against Peyton Manning, Phillip Rivers, Ben Roethlisberger, Matt Schaub, etc are gonna find him out of position. Look, he's a Raven now and I want to see him succeed as much as you but you're outta your mind if you think he is gonna play in coverage 100% of the time as he did at Colorado when a lot of these college QBs who never go anywhere are throwing (or not I guess in this case) at him. Love how I am the first person who welcomed the kid to the Ravens via this thread who was against us drafting him before and people still try to pick apart logic.

As I said, i hope he turns out incredible for us now and he turns his life in the right direction. I just have this sinking gut feeling knowing all these issues he's had in relation to similarly drafted guys recently, not to mention he just switched his agent into Money Grubber, I mean Drew Rosenhaus, look how that guy helped our situation with Gaither...

This is a value pick in the first round for a guy that could be one of the premium, cornerbacks in the NFL. I know all the coverage is over for tonight but the draft is not over. There are still 6 more rounds and at the moment 9 more picks for the Ravens.

The Ravens made their team much better with this selection and that is what you wanna do in the 1st round. Just because pass rush is a need for us, doesn't mean you reach in the 1st round for a less value guy just because he fits a need. That's why the Ravens are so good at drafting because they are true to their board.

Most of those guys you named that are still on the board are still on the board for a reason. Because they are second round talent guys, who the Ravens would have reached for.

As far as OT being a need, well we don't know that for sure. Because of the lock out the Ravens couldn't have any contact with players, thus no new news on players have come out. For all we know the Ravens have every intention of bring back Gaither, moving Oher back to RT, moving Yanda back to RG and drafting a young center. That would improve our Oline and it'd get back to being a strength like in 08 and 09 imo.

We just don't know what the thinking of the Ravens FO is, I respect you opinion, but i think you're wrong.

Unless we trade up, I don't see it happening because many considered him the 3rd best WR in the draft, and Baldwin was taken ahead by KC. So I expect him to go very soon, and also since the Rams have a dier need for a WR who can stretch the field, just like us.

Torrey Smith btw.

Exactly what i was thinking, but we have alot of picks and we have less needs than alot of other teams in the lower 2nd round. But if not, some of us can dream..

I'm happy with this pick. If he turns out to be the shutdown corner he's expected to be he'll be a big boost to the defense and will allow Reed to roam a little more. I'm hoping he'll be able to make an impact right away. That is, if we have a season and if we do he'll have a to really step up week one.

He should be fun to watch and I can't wait to find out the rest of the draft picks.
