Tampa Bay Buccaneers To Cut Aqib Talib?

26 posts in this topic

After the lockout. Apparently enough is enough.... Do you think they could take Jimmy Smith in the first rd now?

So, they'll cut a guy with clear off-field issues and draft another guy with off-field issues? Don't think so.... although, the Ravens may want to take a look should he not go to jail or be suspended for a lengthy period of time.

Raheem Morris doesn't want someone like that influencing his young team. Character > talent. He will get picked up by another team no doubt.

I don't think the Ravens will take Jimmy Smith even though he is the consensus mock. He lied to teams during the combine and some took him off their draft board completely. I have a strong feeling that the Ravens could be one of them.

Let's see Talib has issues and Jimmy Smith also does and you think Tampa wants another head case? I actually can see if Prince Amukamara drops somewhere among 9-12 the Bucs could try to trade up and get Prince.

Talib on the other hand, he'll find a team but I highly doubt the Ravens would pick him up, other teams who may pick up Talib:

- Bengals(Everyone knows why they are 1st on this list)

- Cowboys

- Texans(maybe)

- Raiders

- Eagles

- Lions

So there are a good amount of teams who could sign Talib but I do know the Ravens won't be one of them even though he is a high risk, high reward player.

The Ravens have already seen Talib play first-hand. The Ravens already had success throwing against him. They know his strengths and weaknesses. Frankly, his weaknesses (including his off-field issues) probably outweigh his strengths, so I doubt the Ravens would pick him up.

Lions would be good fit, then Lions could go elsewhere in draft or they can still draft prince with signing talib and that'd be a good secondary.

I understand the potshot the writer of the article took at the Ravens(as cheap as it is) but who do the Raiders have that has gotten into serious trouble recently?

I don't understand the potshot at all... aside from Ray Lewis' incident and Jamal Lewis' drug phone call, our players have been relatively arrest-free. The same cannot be said for the majority of the NFL. That "writer" is a clown.

I'm almost positive that was a fan-written article, especially since the article links to Bleacher Report at the bottom.

You're right. I steer clear of articles on that site.

In my opinion he is worth consideration for picking up. Off field issues notwithstanding he has the talent to be a shut down corner. Bringing him into a locker room with Ray Lewis, Ed Reed, Terrell Suggs etc would provide him with the positive influence he needs to prevent the off field things.

He's still a grown man, though. Being around positive influences wouldn't necessarily prevent him from acting out; just look at how guys on the Steelers and Patriots have gotten in trouble despite having positive locker room leaders. Adults, even those that act like children, make their own decisions. You can lead a horse to water but you can't make him drink.

Why do fans still believe this?

Nothing against you reediddy but to me, thinking Ray, Ed and the other leaders on the Ravens can sort out whatever issues a young player has is flawed thinking. Just last season, two Ravens rookies got into trouble off the field. I remember Derrick Martin was busted for weed possession at an airport back in '08. B.J. Sams also had alcohol-related run-ins with the law.

Talib has being screwing up going back to his days at Kansas. He was drafted to a team with respected veterans like Derrick Brooks and Ronde Barber but their influence has obviously done nothing to deter him from getting into trouble. Why would that change here?

Does anybody really think the Eagles would want Talib? The Lions, maybe, but the Eagles?
[/quote]

It's possible. The Eagles need a CB opposite Samuel and Andy Reid was willing to take a chance on Vick.

I would be surprised if anyone is strongly interested in Talib. He is lucky he has some talent, or he would be long gone by now.

Doesn't Tampa still utilize a Tampa 2? Because if so, I don't see Jimmy Smith being a fit. I see them going after a CB somewhere in the 3rd, 4th or 5th rounds.

No offense taken, I'm a good sport. However, I still contend that the locker room would be a positive influence. One need not look further than the way Ray Lewis openly preaches to young players in the NFL that he's all ears when it comes to voicing their problems, and figuring out solutions.

True, there will always be the outliers like Sams and Martin, and hey maybe Talib won't be affected by Lewis' wisdom at all, but if there's any team that has the potential of putting this kid on the right track, it's us.

In terms of Brooks and Barber being unable to get Talib's head on straight, I can't really speak to it with much confidence, but in my opinion, Barber doesn't really seem like the vocal type, rather a lead-by-example type. Baffling though, that Brooks didn't have any impact, so you may have a point there. Overall, I'll concede that bringing him in here won't by any means yield immediate positive results, if any; however, it's still his best chance.

True and unfortunately there isn't a good track record with these kind of guys, meaning you don't see many of them, if any, be brought in by a great organization that steers the player on the right track.

Like I said to ER20 though, if there is any team that can possibly do it, it's the Ravens. Whether or not the front office wants to take that gamble though, is their decision.

They do, which is why I think Ras-I Dowling is probably the player they're most interested in as Talib's replacement.

Very similar player, minus being a complete headcase.

Good thinking. I see him as a fit as well. Physical enough to involve himself in run support, and can cover well enough to lock down his side.

The Lions are still working on the rebuilding process. I understand CB is a big need up there, but for a young team, especially one led by Jim Schwartz, Talib does not seem like a fit to me at all.

Raiders seem like the best fit to me. Al Davis would probably want to replace Nnamdi, and since Talibs stock is falling, they wouldn't be paying him as much as they did Nnamdi. Add in the fact that Al isn't known for being a character first type owner.

I think the writer of that article got confused in his AFC North teams, I think he meant Cincinnati and Oakland. After all, the Bengals give everyone second, third, fourth, and fifth chances. Referencing the incorrect "stereotype" that Baltimore is a group of "thugs" only makes me ignore that man's opinion even more.
