No one's going to see it that way, because Sony shouldn't have had to wait for such an event to be "forced" to make millions upon millions of people's information secure. A company of their size and knowledge should have had the proper precautions and security measures in place from the start.
Exactly. There's no excuses for this type of thing to happen. If you're a mult-billion dollar corporation then you should expect that some people are going to try and hack your system and do everything possible to prevent it.

How do you know they didn't?

And before anyone says "THEY GOT HACKED THATS PRROF!!!11111oneoneone" no it's not, it's just proof they got hacked. Nothing is hackproof. Besides, many people now believe it was an inside job related to all the layoffs. Security won't stop that.

Like Franny said Xbox got hacked maybe not on this level but it happen. I was a victum but you dont see me blaming xbox although their customer service is something else.

My point is stuff happens you cant just assume that because they are a big company they are not tryin to keep our info secure. It happens people need to calm down its not like they are not taking measures to make things better. I could see if they were hacked an were just like we have a good system in place but they are taking this serious so i think things will get better. Im just not tryin to have to pay for it.

I'm not talking about making the servers "hack proof", but apparently they didn't do much of anything to protect personal information within the server as it's said it was in a simply named file that gave away it was personal and credit card information with next to no encryption. THAT is something they should have known better, period. There's no excuse for that. When millions of people entrust you with their personal and "financial" information, there's no excuse to not protect that information much more than Sony apparently did.

you gotta figure tho that they are running off the old system from ps2 which means that if its been running fine all this time why change it. I understand how u feel an agree but at the same time you gotta understand were all humans mistakes happen. Lets just be happy we should have our PSN back soon an this will be a after thought.

The protection of personal information is not a mistake. Okay they were hacked, I can forgive them for that. You could say there that no one's perfect, but they made no attempt to really protect vital information, there's no excuse or way to justify that. You cannot say "we're all humans, mistakes happen". Not when 77 million people, that's every single PSN user, had information stolen from them, that's unheard of.

It doesn't matter if they were "running off the old PS2 system" and "if it was running fine why change it". Technology is always changing and it's always evolving. So if that were the case in Sony's train of though, shame on them. A technology company of that size should know better than to think that way. Not to mention, the "old PS2 system" wasn't utilized the way it is with the PS3. There was no PSN on the PS2, they didn't have as much personal information as they do with the PS3.

ATD i agree they needed to beef up the security but nothin we can do about now. I dont want you upsetting ur self an stressing over a mistake that someone else mad. To behonest they were probally trying to cut corners like Xbox did when it shipped its faulty systems with the overheating problems because of poor jobs durning assembly.

basically i understand an agree that they shouldnt have taken millions of peoples info lighty but like football all we can do is root for success an sit back an watch the outcome.

At this point, I'm not mad over this whole issue, I'm just annoyed with the hackers. I don't care if they're a part of Anonymous, I just want them found and brought to justice and I want my PSN back.

I'm not concerned about my info being in the wrong hands because, frankly, having so many people's information actually HURTS the black market on credit card info more than it helps. Because there's so much information readily available to be sold, the market value goes down dramatically and prices on each bit of info goes down big-time. I'm far from mad or upset. Unless I get fraudulent charges on my card, I couldn't care less. I hardly ever play online on my PS3 anyways, so if my card is kept clean, I'm hardly effected. My point is that regardless of it's impact on me, Sony's shoddy security is pathetic and they should have known better. It annoys me that a company of their size didn't do more to protect their customers privacy, but I'm not mad about it.

Apple's disregard for security and customer satisfaction pisses me off more.

It's not uncommon to hear people get their credit card info stolen through iTunes. Furthermore, because of their arrogance in claiming to be hack-proof and virus-proof, hackers have gradually started to flock towards penetrating the architecture of Macs and making this information more commonly available online. A few years ago, at a hacker competition, someone was able to crack into a Mac in far less time than a Windows machine.

I never went back to iTunes after the second time my info was stolen. The first time was actually fraudulent charges on my credit card, and the second time was my iTunes gift-card balance being drained. Never again.

Anonymous' latest press release reads like propaganda. I'm not buying it, and even if they're not responsible, I don't particularly care.

If Anonymous isn't responsible, why not be the hero and go after the people who did it if they're allegedly on the side of gamers? Why not prove their innocence?

If they weren't responsible, I don't see why they wouldn't go after the people behind it. As much as we hate hackers and some of the bull... crap that Anonymous has done before, they have done a few good things (i.e. helping catch a child molester on the internet). Granted, it's a minority of their actions, but still.

Allegedly, sources exclusive to CNET are saying that a third attack on the PSN is planned this weekend once the service is back up. (LINK)

I'm getting sick of this crap. This is making me ridiculously angry.

Are You Serious? This is getting out of hand. It's obvious these people are doing this on purpose and that when they get caught, should be thrown in Jail FOR LIFE or if at least get a 10-15 year sentence, ban them from all technology and if they do get near it they are thrown back in Jail ASAP!!!! We got Bin Laden after 10 years, so now let's get these Idiots!!!(I want to use another word but the TOS won't let me)

Go get em' Franny! Well, this will be PSN's true test of the new security system. Unless it plays out like the hackers say, which is that they still control part of Sony servers. I don't understand why they victimize millions of innocent people. If you wanna go after Sony, find another way. I had to go through the entire Spring Break without PSN, and that makes me angry.

Well all I can say is that I hope Sony really shored up their security. I'll be extremely pissed if it goes down again.

The one thing that really gets me is that you can track where people are with their cell phones, computers, GPS, or anything else. Yet here Sony can't find these guys, send police to where they are and shut them down and lock them up.

You can't track nerds in their mother's basement. Signal is weak.

Meh. What I think is that a small group of people infiltrated Sony, and used Anonymous as a scapegoat. I've been into a couple of their IRCs, and most of them opposed on hacking Sony. Anonymous isn't exactly the most organized group out there. Even in Project Chanology, where almost everybody participated and hailed the event, there were still a few that were against the protests. You can't blame a whole group on actions made by a few members.

Regarding to the next planned attack, I was lurking the IRCs for awhile earlier, but that's the first time I've heard about any upcoming attack. I'll go check again tomorrow probably.

Well this is Sony showing that they are looking out for the best interest of their customers. They're providing a free identify theft protection service through Debix for all PSN users. It's a 12 month month service and it even includes a one million dollar identity theft insurance policy. O_O

On top of that delay, two veteran members of Anonymous are saying that it's likely some part of the organization was involved in these attacks, and that according to them, "if you say you are Anonymous, and do something as Anonymous, then Anonymous did it." (LINK)

My rage knows no bounds right now.

I have an idea.... let's send in the Navy Seals!!!! If they found and killed Bin Laden, I'm sure they will able to find where these hackers are.

Here's an interesting article saying that Sony may have been using Outdated Security Software.

http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/109813-Sony-May-Have-Been-Using-Outdated-Security-Software-Claims-Expert
Dr. Gene Spafford, says that Sony may not only have been using outdated security software when hackers attacked PSN, but that it also knew it had a problem months before the intrusion happened.

Spafford said that he had seen discussions on some of the security mailing lists he read, where people who had worked on PSN had found that the servers were running old, unpatched software, without a firewall installed. He said that these people had notified Sony of the potential risk two to three months before the attack, but had seen no response, nor any update to the software.
Well I guess if Sony was really running with an old security system and that they knew about it, I guess this could mean trouble for Sony.
