PSN Update

Whoa! (LINK)

So you wait nearly a week to tell PSN users that their personal information may have been compromised including their credit card information?

I'm glad I deleted my credit card information off there long before this even occurred. I'll make sure I never use it again on any PSN services period.
There's two components to it: 1) It may have been compromised, doesn't mean it's actually been obtained by the hackers; and 2) in many cases, the information isn't available in one nice, neat little package to be readily used, so the best safeguard is to merely change your password when you log back in since they need your password to purchase items if they don't have your exact credit card info but have your log-in info.

I'm concerned, but I'm not throwing my arms in the air in panic. I'm upset that Sony took so long to confirm what we've suspected, but I also think that this'll blow over since people have forgotten that Xbox Live accounts were hacked and stolen back in 2007. Granted, the XBL thefts were on a much smaller scale compared to the millions of compromised PSN accounts, but the whole thing came and went.

The only thing left is for Sony to do all it can to work VERY closely with the credit bureaus in verifying reported fraud charges, if any, and to make sure that gamers are properly compensated for the time (and possible money) lost to this event. Bear in mind, people have their financial information stolen every day, and while not on this scale, it's unlikely that there'll be massive losses reported by gamers when you consider that everything leaves a digital paper trail.

I have never used my credit card on PSN, I have always bought the $10 gift cards at Best Buy that way I wouldn't have to give them any credit card info. I also have only logged in to PSN to just get the latest Roster for Madden, never played an online game to date.

If they start charging, I'm done with PSN.

I only used it once and deleted my information off of there afterwards and that was just a month ago long before they said this all started.

Regardless they waited too long to tell their customers that there is a possibility that their information may have been taken. I feel like a champion at the moment because I'm glad I deleted my information off there. There's a panic going on nearly every game site and they have a right to be concerned.

I hope no gamer's credit card information will be used during or after this event.

Edit: I ended up calling Sony to ask if my CC info was still obtainable even if I deleted my info before. She said it was possible but she couldn't confirm completely. Went ahead and reported my card lost/stolen so I can get a new one. Better safe than sorry.

I really feel bad for Sony. Good lord. I will keep a close eye on my credit card.

but tbh, they waited way too long to tell us this, they were hiding it for awhile.

They stated the reason why they waited was because they wanted to verify that credit card info was exposed before jumping to conclusions. Although the conclusion was a logical one to jump to, it made sense to wait. At the same time, I would've preferred for a pre-emptive message to users rather than waiting for certain. It's important to note that the forensic analysis allegedly wasn't completed in its entirety until Monday, so I can see why they chose to wait.

I see what they're saying but in the end, they should of told it's customers from the start. I could see if they were dealing with a small group of people but they're dealing with the identity and personal information of millions of users. Lack of communication when dealing something as serious that is not smart.

Personally, I don't feel as if these hackers are going to use any of the credit card information they may or may not have obtained. We all know this is an attack on Sony as a company, not those who use Sony Playstations. While we may not know how long this group can hide from Sony, I think they know if they were to start committing massive credit fraud and identity theft, they'd be found quickly, very quickly. They'd have more than just Sony looking for them, and hundreds of thousands of "paper trails" leading towards them.

I didnt remember about that soldier quite right. Sorry that was my fault.

I didnt explain it as well as I wanted to, but I had just gotten off work and was tired.

Some of those are half truths as well and not quite right either. Anon gets a bad name and I'm just trying to defend them. Sorry if I offended you, that was not my intent. I was probably wrong for what I typed because I believe it is against the ToS, I was actually coming on here to delete it. I will leave it alone now, because it is a hot topic for me.

Normally, you would've received a warning for political speech, but we'll let it go this time. No harm, no foul.

Any new news about what's going on. It's been a while, just curious if to anyone has a guesstimate at how much longer it will be before PSN is back running.

Early word is that it could be back by next week. PlayStation Plus subscribers could be compensated with a free download (possibly all PSN users could also get something to this effect), and MMO subscribers (DC Universe Online, Free Realms, etc.) will likely be compensated with a credit to their account.

Well, now it's being reported that the hackers are attempting to sell two million different people's credit card information (including full names, addresses, e-mail addresses, phone numbers, birthdays and full card information). They even went so far as to try to sell it back to Sony, who declined.

They'd be stupid to actually sell any information. Granted, they've already made their bed for when they eventually get caught. However, committing identity theft and credit fraud is not only going to speed up their eventual capture, but pile on the offenses.

hate to say it but most hackers have a superiority complex and a go Big or go home attitude kinda like jerry jones only on the illegal side of things lol

The FBI and Homeland Security are now stepping in. It just got real. Those hackers should be crapping their pants right now, especially since they already threw the feds a bone by trying to sell the info. I better get an extra 30 days of Playstation Plus. I wasn't paying for it for nothing. Hopefully the free download is a Playstation Classic of our choice. So I can finally pick up the first Metal Gear again. lol

More and more reports are coming out that it's unlikely any (complete) credit card info was actually swiped -- but still no conclusive evidence to support this. Besides, the theft of personal information is sometimes enough to obtain even more personal and financial information; the most common form of hacking actually involves social engineering, where a thief will get enough information about you to contact a credible institution and pretend to be you, unlocking even more details throughout the course of several attempts. This is how some kid was able to get access to the account of Xbox Live's Security Director.
