PSN Update

190 posts in this topic

Just fyi, PSN is down for like a 4th Day today. A hacker group is retaliating on the whole Geohot court case.

It could be down for another week for all they know. Its not just the US either, its PSN as a whole, including Japan.

Sony is losing out on ALOT of money right now.

From what I've heard, this group did It because sony took them to court for something. And, they're threatening to take it right back down when Sony finally gets it back up.

Hackers are some of the saddest little maggots in the world.

If you're found doing something like this you should receive a lifetime ban from internet access. It would make their sad little lives even sadder.

XBL's been attacked plenty of times, just not on this scale.

Honestly, while Anonymous claims that what they're doing is fighting for gamers' rights, they fail to realize the point of why Sony sued Geohot: he tried to release the keys to the PS3 to EVERYONE on the Internet, which could've (and most likely would've) been used to pirate games. While Geohot's intention was to allow users to homebrew and run other operating systems, the potential for rampant piracy was the reason that Sony stepped in, so as to protect their property. The case was settled and Geohot is now cooperating with Sony, but Anonymous continues to target Sony regardless.

Though Anonymous is not one centralized group, there is no doubt that there's a bunch of rogue hackers who are doing this on behalf of the group. And why? Because they can. That's the only reason. And it's pure BS. There's a lot of anger on the Internet towards these rogue hackers, but frankly, it's only a matter of time before they're caught. When you go up against a big corporation like Sony, they certainly have enough resources to get the authorities involved and catch them as soon as they make a mistake.

I've been literally tortured throughout this whole thing. It pains me too much and who knows when it'll be back up. Damn you Anonymous! Can't wait till Sony gets their hands on them through the legal system.

All Hackers are to me, is people who have no life and nothing else better to do. Now I haven't logged on to PSN in a week or two so I don't know about this but this is just sad to see they can't figure out something better to do with their lives, must be high school drop outs who did this.

So they're fighting for gamers "rights" to pirate games, while denying them the right to access and play on PSN?

I hope Sony shut that group down and that every one of them gets a lifetime ban from the internet.

Honestly, self-righteous morons like Anonymous cause more problems than they'll ever solve, it saddens me that their stupid, no life, hacker, selves don't realise that what they're doing just annoys people and I wish they'd actually find a point to their collective sad lives.

here is the problem with what they are doing a small Economics lesson for yall . Avg game in 1980 was 40 bux, people with computers began pirating the games in 1990 nintendo and sega realize it and bump the price up to 50 to cover lost expenses ,. then in 1998 again the price was bumped up cause of Roms sites , now flash forward to 2001 , the advent of Code breaking Decrypt rerout microchips from the 80s cold war some one gets the bright idea to recode them to Break Copy Protection essentialy bringing to light Mod Chips for consoles and the sites such as pirate bay allow Thieves to steal thier games and use them on consoles. now the End user agreement for sony and MS and Nintendo state , Piracy is rights for banning and prosecution and upon subscribing to thier services you are now Bound by the agreement. this is a Legal Binding Contract between Gamer and Company . the prices of games are getting higher cause more people Pirate then buy anymore its not the companies fault they have to recoup thier losses cause some Don't Want to pay. Anonymous is a group who hates the prices of things yet supports the Very thing that drives prices up. now here is the question why wont anyone Turn them in

Please. They won't be near a PS3, not even a computer in jail. =)

In other news, it's going to be a little while longer before PSN comes back on. They're trying to rebuild so it won't happen again. (LINK)

The worst part about this is, this completely undermines the work of people within the open-source community. Hackers aren't all bad; the term just brings negative connotations because we automatically think of groups like Anonymous that attack corporations. There are legit programmers out there who take products that they purchase and experiment, and those experiments yield technological advances that have done tremendous things. Speaking strictly in terms of software, open-source has always been a philosophy of giving back, and people don't charge for this software that is NOT intended to pirate or harm in any way, shape, or form. However, it's acts like this PSN attack that cause people to be wary of open-source, because the potential to do bad things will always exist with the open share of software and information.

I can't stand hackers... I don't have a PS3, but I can imagine the annoyance this has caused and the millions of dollars this has cost Sony. It's a shame and I hope whoever did this gets the book thrown at them.

I've been reading across several websites and message boards, and there's some people who are adamant that none of the hackers will ever be caught. On the contrary, I believe that they made a huge mistake in targeting a corporation like Sony that has endless resources. It's similar to if someone decided to target Microsoft or Apple and hit their bottom line as significantly as this. It's one thing to cost them miniscule amounts, but each day that the PSN is offline is money lost despite it being a free service.

I'm confident that Sony will find a couple of hackers in time. Hackers are, after all, human and they will make a mistake or be a victim of their own arrogance, especially if they're 16-24. Also, it's likely that one of their own could snitch on the rest in exchange for amnesty. This has happened plenty of times before with other situations.

Yeah, but I think it all depends on where the hackers set up shop... if overseas, I don't know that they'll ever be caught unless, as you point out, their arrogance gets the better of them, which I'm sure it will. I mean, not many people can claim they've caused something like the PSN to be shutdown for numerous days.

I'm confused. If Sony JUST took them to court about 3 weeks ago, I don't understand how they couldn't be found. Anyhow, I'm not going to be surprised when I don't get compensated for this. Yeah, internet is free, but for some people (not me), this game system is their life haha. I feel like we should at least get a moderate sum of money on our psn accounts if this goes on any longer. Just now, I saw that Sony has "no timetable" for PSN coming back up. About 5 days ago, it was "in 2 days". BS!

I'm so relieved that CoD: Black Ops is such utter garbage, otherwise the PSN being down for over a week would irk me to no end.

They just took one guy to court, and he wasn't responsible for any of these attacks; it was a coordinated group of hackers attacking on his behalf in protest.

I'm hearing word that these hackers actually were able to fake credit card info so they could pirate PSN downloads, and could also get around console bans to get back online to play COD. That's allegedly the primary reason behind this long outage, as they're doing everything possible to rework their infrastructure to prevent another occurrence.

Ah thanks for the clear up, my bad man. Now I also saw something about these people also getting in trouble for trying to jailbreak their playstations. I assume it's probably related to what you are saying. Stupid. People.

The long and short of the rumored problem is right here (LINK)

Basically, some hackers found a way to run custom firmware on their PS3s and make it appear as if they were developer PS3s, which would then allow them to unlock certain PSN content without paying for it. There's some more complication to it (and I highly recommend that you read the links that Joystiq included within the blog post) but the reason why this outage is taking excessively long is because Sony wants to make sure that no information (i.e. credit card info) was stolen.

It better be speculation. It can't be as bad as xboxs new fees.

Whoa! (LINK)

So you wait nearly a week to tell PSN users that their personal information may have been compromised including their credit card information?

I'm glad I deleted my credit card information off there long before this even occurred. I'll make sure I never use it again on any PSN services period.

I have never used my credit card on PSN, I have always bought the $10 gift cards at Best Buy that way I wouldn't have to give them any credit card info. I also have only logged in to PSN to just get the latest Roster for Madden, never played an online game to date.

If they start charging, I'm done with PSN.
