Aqib Talib Allegedly Involved in Shooting

46 posts in this topic

The Bucs' starting CB Aqib Talib is embroiled in yet another off-field controversy, this time stemming from a March 21st incident where Talib allegedly attempted to pistol-whip his sister's boyfriend, got into a physical altercation, then took his mother's gun and fired shots as the victim ran away. (LINK)

This isn't the first sign of trouble from Talib; following the Bucs' loss to the Ravens last season, Talib was seen threatening a referee and had to be physically restrained by his teammates. In his first two years in the league, Talib got into physical altercations with his own teammates, and in 2009, was suspended by the league for an incident that led to charges of simple battery and resisting arrest.

That was the knock on him coming out of college, and why teams were reluctant to pick him up early and thus fell to the 20th pick when he may have been the best CB in the draft. This kid needs to grow up quickly or he'll be out of the league.

This is why I fear us going after a guy like Jimmy Smith..
Agreed, but you can't have a whole team full of saints, and taking a risk on a superior talent with some off-the-field issues is a risk sometimes worth taking with the appropriate support systems in place, which the Ravens have.

Not just for Aqib in particular, but I just don't get why people find the need to get into this level of trouble. Completely unnecessary.

I think that's where it's important to differentiate between the types of off-field issues. I believe that legal issues should always take precedent over other character concerns, but the character risks of a locker room cancer are almost as bad as the distractions of someone who continually has encounters with law enforcement. That's where my argument of Randy Moss over Terrell Owens comes into play, even if both players were in their prime.

He has some of the best ball skills for a corner you could imagine, why would a guy with so much talent be such a fool off the field

I agree they all can't be saints but being idiotic and thuggish is on another level. Yeah we have had guys like Bart Scott who is a brute and thug on the field but a great guy off the field or CMac who was a shutdown corner but had drinking problems off the field. Stuff like that I can deal with but guns, no. I don't wanna waste a pick on a guy who hasn't grown up and being a team in Baltimore has trouble written all over it. Too many bad influences for someone like Jimmy Smith. It's not like we are Green Bay or Jacksonville, we are a huge city.

So here he is ready to hit somebody with his whipping gun, then he goes in for his momma's gun, which is apparently the "kill somebody" gun in the household.

Nice to know everybody in the family is packing.

I definitely agree.... certain off-the-field issues such as violence or a serious drug problem are giant red flags, and I would pass on those players regardless of how talented they are.

Character matters. It's been said more eloquently, in this thread, than I could put it so I'll leave it at that...

:34853_doh: we may see more of this kind of garbage as the players having nuthin to do with themselves, being as tho their careers r so up in the air, i hope its an isolated incident

Sean Taylor was the same way but people often overlook that due to his murder. It is true than Sean was changing but still, he pistol whipped a guy too.

Very true. People, generally, see him a lot differently after death. The character issues are overlooked because of the nature, timing, and tragedy of his murder.

That's normal, though. Look at Michael Jackson... not to open that can of worms...

Yes, Ferarri, such issues as violence and drug abuse should be addressed by the teams, and if these issues are involved when it comes to a player to draft, and have enter a team system, then you just don't go after that player.

I have to believe that, considering the fact that there is a certain sense of morality involved in being in Baltimore, the Ravens have a system with which to select a decent player who can be dealt with in the event of trouble off the field. Such a player, it has been shown, can become a productive person - both on and off the field.

Apparently, his sister's boyfriend stole the gun while he was getting pistol-whipped and that's why Talib had to get his mom's gun... :34853_doh:

I was thinking the same thing. If the lockout continues for a long time, we may see more stories like this. (hopefully not)

The story doesn't mention if the weapons were registered. If not, someone may be looking at some hard time. I'd imagine Texas' gun laws aren't nearly as tough as New York's though.

Yea, I was kind of thinking that it might not even be a crime in Texas.
Plax should take notice!

In the light of what has happened, 2 Tampa Columnists are calling for the Bucs to dump Talib.
“Dump this clown,” Fennelly writes. Later in the column he says: “Let this train wreck somewhere else.”

Gary Shelton of the St. Petersburg Times took a more reasoned approach to the situation, but ultimately came to the same conclusion.

“The next time something is fired, it ought to be Talib,” Shelton wrote.
Warrants, wow...

It's funny, because of 2008-drafted DB is boxing this offseason - not gunning people down with his mom.

Drafted in '08, out of the league by '11.

It takes a whole lot of dumb to put a player of Talib's talent out of the league in 3 years, but he's somehow managed it.

The level of intelligence these players have and the culture/way in which they live astonishes me. All the money and talent in the world and this is what you do?!?!!??!
