Ravens Compensatory Picks

28 posts in this topic

...for the losses of Edwards and Bannan. Hopefully, both in the 5th round, but either could end up being 6ths.

Those added on will give the Ravens 9 draft picks heading into the draft.

Comp picks hereby make no sense to me. We lost Leonhard, Scott, and Brown in the same off season, Scott and Brown got massive contracts and Brown is actually the highest paid Center in the game. But that year we got no comp picks because we signed Birk and Kelly Washington? We lose Edwards and Bannan, but sign Redding and Houshmandzadeh/Stallworth and we get 2 comp picks?

I feel the same way. Judging by that same year you're referring to, I thought we'd get absolutely nothing this year. I'm not sure how they decide who to give compensation picks to but it makes no sense to me either. Despite that, I'll take the picks.. :190048:

According to the Front Page it seems we'll get 1 5th Compensatory pick and the other would be a 6th Round Pick

Round 1: No. 26

Round 2: No. 58

Round 3: No. 90

Round 4: No. 122

Round 5: No. ? (TBA compensatory pick)

Round 6: No. 175 (acquired in trade to Rams for WR Mark Clayton and seventh-rounder)
Round 6: No. 186

Round 6: No. ? (TBA compensatory pick)

Round 7: No. 215 (acquired in trade to Eagles for LB Antwan Barnes)

We don't get penalized for Housh and Stalls because both were let go, not sure about Redding though.

Either way, we don't know for sure what picks we will be getting at this point.

Ravens get 2 5th Rd Picks. 164th & 165th overall.
Honestly, I'm ecstatic about that. Never thought we'd receive two 5ths.

Do you think that there might be the slightest possibility that we trade up in the draft? Say for example trading up to 11 with Minnesota. There's a chance we could possibly snag JJ Watt or Julio, and a very slight chance we could pick up Amukamara which of course I would be very happy to do.

It's just a thought, and in all honesty, I'd probably rather move down a bit so that we have more picks in the higher rounds.

If we could land Julio that would be great. But I doubt we trade up. I wish we would but we have been drafting some pretty good players wherever we are in the draft and I don't think the FO is willing to give up too many picks because of that.

Great news. Some talented players that could be molded and contribute down the line will be available in the later rounds.

Compensatory Picks cant be traded in anyway shape or form. So we couldnt package the 5th rd picks to move up. :/
Thanks for the info.

I believe with 2 extra 5th round picks, the Ravens don't have to go with OL so high in the draft since you can find quality players in the later rounds. Should be great for depth signings.

Guess it's time to make a new mock draft then lol
I know right. I was just thinking about making a pre-draft one and this news allows for some flexiblity.

Believe it or not, there is rhyme and reason to it.

The year we lost Scott, Brown, Leonhard (and Boller), we signed 4 UFAs (Foxworth, Birk, Carr and LJ Smith). When you sign as many UFAs as you lose, you only get a comp pick in rare circumstances.

As far as this year goes, TJH and Stallworth were released by their prior clubs, so they don't count toward the comp pick calculation. Only true UFAs - players whose contracts have expired, as opposed to terminated - count toward the comp pick formula. As the stories linked in the OP say, Redding was also a special case, in that his contract was renegotiated to remove years from his prior deal, so he didn't count either.

I agree with this about getting younger. Last time we got compensatory picks was 2008, and that was one of our best draft classes ever. This really has heightened my excitement for this draft. Oz will make some wizardry go down.

9 picks, even though we can't trade these picks, gives us alot a flexability to move up and down, and that's really where Ozzie thrives when he's drafting. We got unlucky moving down and taking Kindle last year, but I'm not willing to write that off completely just yet.

i hope we can trade up for one them but new England has two first round picks they need one of those players and have better chance acquiring them but that would be awesome if we trade up and got julio jones or jj watt
