When Ray Retires...

46 posts in this topic

Do you think that the Ravens will retire the #52? I know it's done only in special cases but this is the guy who's been the face of the franchise for what seems like forever and he's in my mind the best ILB in the history of the league. You could argue a couple of other guys, but none have been pretty much at the top of the game for a decade and a half.

Opinions?

Absolutely.

The NFL technically doesn't [s]allow[/s] like retired numbers, there are only so many to go around with their policy on position/numbering, but it still happens. There's a reason no one has suited up with #75 since J.O. left. I doubt anyone else will don #52, as it should be. Same might happen for #20. Maybe.

There's no doubt they'll do it.

I'll actually be surprised if Ray's number isn't retired and he isn't inducted into the Ravens Ring of Fame the first home game the season after he retires like the Broncos did with Elway.

No one else will wear 52, thats guaranteed, even if the number isn't retired no guy would ever try to claim it...its the number 52 c'mon. I thought the thread was gonna say.. when ray leaves..our D dies (which might happen)

Don't talk about Ray Ray leaving...I'm in denial :34853_shakehead:

me 2. it would be awesome if we brought him back as a coach though, we would miss his prescence on the field but he would still motivate our guys on the sidelines.

52 and 20 are absolute first ballot hall of famers no question. I disagree, yes a piece of our D dies theres no denying that, but Haloti will be the glue that keeps this thing together.

I don't really believe that the number 52 will be retired from circulation, but will probably be held from circulation for quite a while.

agree.
There will only ever be one #52 on the Baltimore Ravens roster.

Did you also notice that there has never been a #19 on the Baltimore Ravens? Rumor has it there never will be.

(I am pretty sure that is true)

thinking of our defence without ray is like thinking of a candy store full of vegetables....Sure they'll still be awesome, but it will never be the same.

Also, no one wears #57 anymore. (OJ)

52 and 75 need to be retired. I mean lets face it, the fans will flip out if any player ever wears those numbers again (unless JO and Ray's children play for the team or something). Retiring those 2 numbers is very important. They are HoF players and they were the cornerstones of our franchise.

Statues please?

Is that even a question? Of course Ray Lewis's #52 is going to be retired when he does. As well as that he will be in the ring of honor or whatever they do now and the HoF will be calling, he will get in 1st try no discussions on that..

You want to know what an impact Ray Lewis has made and that #52 is his...it looks weird to me when another team has a player in 52 haha..so I know that there's never going to be another one.

Called the "Water Buffalo" by opposing players because he was big, slow, and easy to sack - he had the mobility of the animal. Everything you look for in a QB.

Whatever Ray wants! No one will ever wear #52 again, and the water buffalo? Somebody should have got fired for even suggesting it, little less allowing it to happen! :34853_shakehead:

I can only see one good thing out of it. We as Ravens fans know the exact impact that he has on the field, exactly what kind of dynamic force he has been for 15 years. He was, is , and always will be the envisionment of ravens football. The only good thing we can take solace in is the fact that when he does hang them up we will have the satisfaction of knowing the greatest ILB to ever put on cleats played for our team. Not only will us fans know it, but the rest of the league will stand up (even the steelers) to embrace the cemented legacy of the only man who will don the #52 in purple and black ever again.

I had been panning this topic cuz I figured it was about finding Ray's replacement. Now I look at it and I don't see how anyone can disagree with what has already been said. No other Raven will ever wear #52 after Ray is gone and no one should wear #75 either. Ed Reed is my favorite Raven of all time, but at this moment I am hesitant to add #20 to that list. First ballot HOFer, most likely at this point and obviously a future Ravens Ring of Honor member. But he isn't quite on the Ray / JO level. Let's get him a Super Bowl before we talk about retiring #20 as well!

Instead of losing #52 we could just retire the last name Lewis.
Does that mean no Ray Lewis III ??

It just means that the name on his jersey, on the roster and in Madden would have to be LewIIIs.

Considering the fact that they will be putting a statue of Ray Lewis either outside or inside the stadium(personally, I think Unitas should be moved and Ray should take the front-and-center spot...) it's pretty much a sure bet that nobody else will ever be wearing #52 for the Baltimore Ravens.
