NOTE: This is a strictly HYPOTHETICAL question -- I'm simply playing devil's advocate to see what might happen. This is NOT a reflection of who will be the starter by the season opener, nor who I think will have the most success of the three QBs. Therefore, please DON'T make this a discussion about who you think the starter SHOULD be.

EDIT: I added a poll question above to go along with the topic.

Now that Kyle Boller has gotten the starting nod for Thursday's preseason opener against New England, I couldn't help but think back to all of his struggles and criticism during his time in Baltimore.

After reading about how Boller has had a tendency to play things safe in camp, I immediately thought of Trent Dilfer's approach to quarterbacking when he had taken the Ravens to the Super Bowl in 2000.

Although Boller and Dilfer are two different players, at the helm of two different Ravens squads, Dilfer's mistake-free play brought him success at Raymond James Stadium -- that same mistake-free play that Boller is hoping will do the same, should the Ravens make their return to Tampa.

Trent Dilfer was considered a hero in Baltimore after cementing the team in the annals of history.

My question is, if Kyle Boller does the same and brings home another Lombardi Trophy, will we hold him in the same regard as Dilfer?

no....it would take more than a ring...

Kyle Boller would have to have a ProBowl type season to get any love in Baltimore...

People forget Dilfer came in as Tony Banks' backup in 2000...Dilfer lost the first game than proceeded to win the next 11 games in a row (including playoffs and superbowl)...

Baltimore loved Dilfer because we HATED Tony Banks...and Dilfer won us a bowl

Well, the majority of us feel like Kyle has had his chance in Bmore and its time for him to move on, meaning the next QB to have a good season in Baltimore will probably be loved. Could be Boller, but i honestly think it would take more than a ring, i think it would take a HUGE season...

unfortunately, i just dont see that happening for Boller (not in bmore at least)

if Boller wins a ring...he will be the second QB in NFL history to be cut immediately afterwards

who knows, if he's going to be the next Dilfer anyways, history might as well just repeat itself ^_^

If Kyle Boller wins a ring i say he should be the long term starter and i would hold him in higher regards than Dilfer. I dont care what you did in the past, a ring is a ring and i wouldnt want to mess with success.

What will happen if Boller wins a ring?

Hell freezes over.

Could you please answer the question objectively?

Its amazing that you all hate him so much that even if won the Superbowl and showed that he could be one of the top QB's in the league you all would still kick him out of town it just shows how stupid the fans can be sometimes. If If If If If Boller wins us a superbowl this season which mean that he carried the team through games that they shouldn't have won threw the injuries that will come this season and so on HE STAYS. We franchise him give him another chance to prove its not a fluke and then we make a decision because Flacco's contract will be one of the cheapest backup contracts if he doesn't play since his contract is full of performance clauses.

That's one of the reasons why I made this thread; I wanted to gauge responses and see if people might respond as expected, or might go the opposite direction.

Nothing changes and next year he'll still have to fight to keep his starting job. That's the way it should be winning a ring should never grant you immunity you should still have to prove that you are capable to lead from one year to the next.

Fact of the matter is, is that Kyle Boller is a hated man in this town and for the most part it was because he was put in a bad system with no weapons outside of Heap, no line, and when the tools are finally in place they put him in the game when they are all injured. Put a solid offense around this guy and i guarantee that you will see a different quarterback. With a solid offense around Kyle he will at minimum be a solid Quarterback.

The question wasn't really in terms of job security.

What I meant was, if Boller goes on to win a Super Bowl as the starting QB of this team, would you love him for it, or still hate him for his lackluster seasons in the past, or would you just be indifferent towards him and not care if he also goes the way of Dilfer and gets cut?

I find it highly unlikely, but if it were to happen it would be like any other sports personality, you go from hated to loved. The thing here is that Boller would have "to win it" for him to be loved. Dilfer played OK, but the D won that, hence our love affair with the defense. I think the only reason that Boller is not hated and drummed out of town is the fact that he is a genuine good guy and works hard to improve.

I have love for Boller. I dont hate him. Its really got me thinking though. Maybe we should give him a chance. I know someone is going to say he already had his chance but think about it though. He was thrown to the wolves when he got here thanks to Billick. Hes got a fresh new start under Cam. Lets give him his shot. He also has weapons on the offense he can use now. Willis McGahee, Todd Heap(always had him), Derrick Mason, Mark Clayton, along with others who might be those hidden gem kinda guys. I say give him his chance. Its hard wanting 2 people to start even though only 1 can (and no 1 of em is not Flacco).

Valid points, but it's not as if Trent Dilfer wasn't loved after the digital scoreboard read triple-zeroes and a Ravens win on the biggest stage.

You could definitely argue that Dilfer didn't necessarily "win" the game, and yet, people still loved him for not making too many mistakes while the defense racked up wins during the season.

If Boller follows the same exact path, who's to say that he won't get the same love that Dilfer gets, past aside?

Keep in mind, it's not as if Dilfer's career was the definition of success before coming to Baltimore.

Good point, but please, let's not make this another long, drawn-out thread about who we think should start at QB.

Let's just keep this exclusively on the topic of how people would feel about Kyle Boller if he were to win a Super Bowl as the starting QB for the Ravens.

I HATE HIM, TROY SMITH ALL THE WAY

Could you please try to answer the question objectively?

How would you feel about Kyle Boller IF he won a Super Bowl as the starting QB for the Ravens?

I like Boller now so the question doesn't change my opinion.

Of course I would love him. Just imagine being able to brag about Kyle Boller being a super bowl winning super bowl. That aside, I've always secretly wanted Kyle Boller to be be successful, he just seems like such a good guy that gets so much hate from everyone. He always seems to be trying its just he doesn't have all the pieces in place.

I'll tell you what spiked a little love interest in KB already... That cutblock he made during the Pats game (I want to say it was on AD but I foreget) for one of McGahee's longer runs... how sick was that seriously a QB doing something like that says alot about how hard they're striving to perform.

Yea.. It would also be really cool to see Kyle doing that during the Playoffs or even Super Bowl. Itd make the other coaches have to plan against him on the run

I hate him so if he wins a ring i would feel in different and want to see quality performance out of him the next season for me to finally believe he's turned the corner. If he wins mvp then I'll start to believe in him, It will take 2 seasons of goodness to sway me on to boller

Agreed. You gotta love his attitude and work ethic, but it would take more than one season to sell me on the idea that he actually developed into what we all hoped he would be so long ago. That would be great though, as I'm sure he would have plenty of good years left.

I think this thread is a good measure on how ignorant fans can be. I admit that I'm a big Boller supporter, but even if I wasn't I would realize that winning is all that matters. We don't need a guy like Tom Brady to win games. So, if Boller can come in and win, why can't you all accept him? Of the three quarterbacks, I don't want Troy Smith to start. I'm saying that now, but if he wins the job and does well, you better believe I'll be happy with the decision.

itd be better if troy does it..

also it depends on how he does it... as a back up? or a terrible passer being carried by the defense.

If he plays well good for him, i wouldnt be quick to love him so quick.

It was implied that it'd be as the Ravens' starting QB.

But, your point was made, regardless.

in one way im kinda glad boller gets the start only because i think he deserves a far shot for once. but i kinda thought with a new head coach and a whole new offense they would jump in a different direction like troy smith . i personly dont care who they start i dont think harbaugh or cam cameron are going to mess this up.
