Adrian Peterson Compares Players' Place in NFL to Slavery

The OP has a link to Peterson calling working in the NFL a form of "modern slavery", which is of course not to mean civil-war era slavery. Based on how people have defined modern day slavery, yes, players do fit in that description. So I can't say I disagree with his statement.

Doesn't this violate some code of conduct?

I can see why you didn't quote me because you clearly didn't read what I wrote.

You are apparently thinking: Slavery = no money. NFL = millions of dollars.

You are not taking into consideration the treatment of players, which is what this is all about. It's an exaggeration of the way the players are treated - not to be taken literally. People react to the word slavery. That's the only reason why Peterson used it. He doesn't think he's a poor Southern plantation worker
We have a winner. C'mon fellas, you are actually taking the statement Adrian made literally? The area Adrain lives in in Texas was actually the last place of Texas to cut free of original slavery (Texas was the last state to do away with original slavery ) so I'm positive Adrian didn't mean that literally but like what's been pointed out, there is a correlation with slavery and how players are treated in the NFL l like property and that's all Adrian obviously meant.

Only thing is, Rashard (see I got the name right that time!) actually truthfully agrees with Peterson's sentiments, and took it to a whole different level. Rashard is one weird guy...

I think the word you need to look up is slavery. You're only looking at 18th century American plantation slavery. The idea of slavery is that people are treated as property - which is often how athletes feel. It's how many people feel. People who are in debt are, in a way, enslaved by banks and the IRS, and that comparison has been made many times over.

No one is in actual bondage, shackles, or being whipped to work for no pay, but the idea of slavery persists even if in a more benign context. Just look at the combine. Does that not show "parallel" to the selling of slaves?

Athletes are expected to (as many here have suggested) keep their mouths shut. They are no more than physical mutants expected to perform. Not to talk, not to have a voice. Centuries ago, slaves were not allowed to read. In this day athletes are not allowed to express their opinion. THAT is a parallel.

The people responding to Peterson and Mendenhalls comments are blowing this out of proportion, not the players.

Well put..I totally agree with you on the idea that sports/athletes in many ways parallel modern slavery and it is really a grey issue and hard to say in no way they are not and in every way they are. Nicely done stating the other view though, well said.

Wow, I didn't expect anyone to agree with me. People see hot-button words like slavery and it's like everything else you say doesn't matter - you said "slavery", therefore, you're wrong.

Thanks.
Yes, he got a 16.
that explains a lot.
Has anyone ever taken a Wonderlic of any type? They are pretty easy. I've scored a 41 and 36 on the two I've taken. All Day scoring a 16 is pretty bad..

i took one and got a 40, they have em on madden too, but they just give u an out of 10 score, i usually got 8/10, im not sure what difference there is between them and a standard iq test, other than length, they both seem to have the same type of questions.

You guys ... Wow.How poorly is AD being treated by the big bad owners? Let's think about it...AD made a decision to become a professional athlete, so it goes without saying that intense physical training becomes his daily routine. He also knew the hours would be long and tough (you thought your graveyard shift at Sunoco is grueling??).Any lifestyle restrictions were spelled out clearly in the employment contract that he agreed to sign. His employer even pays for his transportation as well as accomodations when traveling abroad.I just dont get it. What could possibly go on behind the scenes that would justify a slavery comparison? Do they make the poor guy sit in the back of the Lear jets? Ask him to put in some overtime?

Another player agrees with Peterson and Mendenhall.... this time FB Leonard Weaver.
“We as players want to make a statement that you know what, we love playing for you all, we love your owners, you know?” Weaver told Derrick Gunn of CSNPhilly.com. “We love you guys very much, but at the same time we need to see some equal opportunity here and stop treating us basically like Adrian Peterson said, like slaves. . . .
Stop putting a microphone in front of stupid people!

Obviously with other NFL players agreeing with him, there is a correlation somewhere in there. You keep taking that word " slavery " as 18th Century slavery treatment and obviously , thats not what he is referring too b/c I highly doubt that these NFL players are that dumb. Als, even the smartest people say dumb stuff at times so the Wonderlic test score means squat.
