Adrian Peterson Compares Players' Place in NFL to Slavery

72 posts in this topic

Really, Adrian? This is such a joke, and I really used to have a lot of respect for him, but this is so uncalled-for I don't even know what to say. He and his cohorts are making millions upon millions of dollars. If they were slaves, trust me, I think they'd all know it.

Exactly my thoughts... he obviously skipped his American History courses at Oklahoma if this is what he thinks "slavery" is.

Slavery? He is talking about people who would work hard everyday and still get whipped. Shoot, he is playing a child's game for money, fame, mansion and "Whips". What an absolute moron. I have lost soooo much respect for him. Can't wait to watch the Vikings fail next season, if there is one.

I think he said this just to divert attention away from the serious addiction that he has.

His addiction to fumbling.

OHHHHHH! (*crickets*)

But seriously, this ranks right up there with some of the more idiotic remarks by athletes I've heard lately.

LOL, I agree. I think idiotic remarks must be a symptom of his "fumble-itis." The now-defunct NFLPA and the players they used to represent are really looking stupid throughout this process, putting the owners in an even better light P.R.-wise

I'll be a slave for 5 million a year... or for Sofia Vergara.
So would I.

I haven't lost any respect for Peterson. It was a dumb thing to say but I'm not surprised. There's a reason he wasn't very quotable before these remarks.

He and Chris Johnson shouldn't be allowed to talk anymore. Not just because they're not well-spoken, but also because they're bound to say something dumb if you keep a mic in their face long enough. NFL teams have media coaches for a reason, to avoid a verbal faux pas like this one.

I can imagine the next time Zygi Wilf and Adrian meet to negotiate his new contract in a year or two or whenever...

Zygi Wilf ("Slave" owner): So, Adrian, you're a slave, right? If that's true, then that means you don't get paid, and I "own" you until you're no longer of use to me!

Adrian ("Slave"): Did I say "slave"? I meant more like a servant, you know, because they still get paid but are constantly under the owner's thumb.

Zygi Wilf ("Slave" owner): *Pulls up quote on the Internet* Nope, you said "slave," I guess that means we'll be retaining your services for free. That is, unless you've had a change of heart...

Adrian ("Slave"): Why, uhhh, yessir! Whatever you need, I'm your man, sir! Thank you, master, uh, Mr. Wilf.

Man, what the hell am I then? Working in a cubicle slaving away my life for pennies? Hell?

Very poor comment by AP. Freedom and million of dollars is the anti-slavery.

Strange, I just finished several books about the Civil War. They never mentioned that the slaves were that well paid. :34853_doh:

Well, Peterson certainly gets "Pinhead of the Week Award." This certainly qualifies him for Pinhead of the Year.

The historian in me cringed BIG TIME and then I cheered when I saw

Ryan Grant's response on Twitter (from ESPN's NFC North blog):
I have to totally disagree with adrian Peterson's comparison to this situation being Modern day slavery..false.

Their [sic] is unfortunately actually still slavery existing in our world.. Literal modern day slavery.. That was a very misinformed statement

But I understand what point he was trying to make.. I just feel like he should have been advised a little differently
Really....they should issue a gag order...neither side should be allowed to speak about anything anymore until all this is 100% over. I lose more respect with each passing day.

Agreed. The owners are wisely letting the players and NFLPA shoot themselves in the foot.

All of these guys graduated from a college?
Peterson actually didn't. He entered the draft after his junior year.

Hate to say it, but he will feel all those things when football fizzles away for him. He will have squandered most (all) of his money.

I have to agree with you, Franchise - such a mistake by one of the more interesting running backs in the NFL is surely something which has to be dealt with.

I just have to wonder how much more he can say until someone tells him that he needs to change his standard for media.

Ouch... I doubt he really tried though, considering he was a lock to go in the Top 10, but it's still pretty sad.

Let's add to this list of players who shouldn't be given a mic or in this case should be off twitter. Steelers RB is backing Peterson and agreeing with him.

http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2011/03/17/rashard-mendenhall-has-adrian-petersons-back/
Mendenhall’s response to Peterson’s comments:
“@AdrianPeterson is correct in his anology of this game. It is a lot deeper than most people understand. Anyone with knowledge of the slave trade and the NFL could say that these two parallel eachother.”
I guess he'll be traded because I doubt him agreeing with Peterson would go over well with the Rooneys.

"Anyone with knowledge of the slave trade and the NFL could say that these two parallel each other"??

No, no, after having taken numerous History courses and having done minor research on the subject, they do not, Rashard Mendenhall. My college degree says they do not. Where's yours, Mr. Mendenhall? Oh wait, you left school early. -_-

Anyone can look like an idiot after having a brain fart like Peterson. It does, however, take a complete moron to agree with a brain fart.
