Free-Roam Shooters

25 posts in this topic

Been away from the shooter genre for a while. Was wondering if yall can help out. Other than the Fallout series, are there any other free-roam fps?

Edit (2011MAR28): No longer looking for free-roam fps. Just straight up FPS multiplayer and the whole shebang.

Mass Effect 2 is somewhat like this, although there's a linear story. However, there's plenty of side quests and exploration to be done that can get you side tracked from that story, so you could play for quite a few days before having nothing left but the primary story to play, and then as you progress throughout the story, more side quests pop up. Note, though, that the game is played from a third-person camera angle, not first-person.

Far Cry 2 is much closer to the open-world free-roaming of Fallout 3, but the setting is much more realistic.

Mercenaries 2 and Just Cause 2 are also options.

To be fair, though, Fallout 3 and New Vegas aren't technically shooters in the traditional sense, although they're played from the traditional FPS camera perspective. They're like RPGs that just happen to have FPS elements, rather than the other way around.

Far Cry 2 looks more like what I'm looking for. The FPS/RPGs can be fun, but I don't really wanna look to "level up" in shooters.

Depends on which system he's getting it for. Crysis 2 on the PS3 was horrid and unplayable online. If he wants it for the single player, fine but I wouldn't recommend it at all because it is clearly the inferior version.

Okay. So I decided not to buy another game. Instead I'm going to save my $60 and go back to my library.

I'm getting back into Modern Warfare 2. I haven't played it in forever and my first online team pretty much lost because of my 2-30 KD ratio.

Anyone wanna help my get my self confidence back, hit me up (please).

COD in general is a mess of a game online and a garbage game unless you're on a squad that's memorized the maps and you have a good grasp of the maps yourself.

If you're trying to get into an online multiplayer FPS in general, get Killzone 3; the melee kills are actual attacks with full animations, unlike COD's ridiculous swipe of a knife, and there's legitimate strategy involved with each map. The abilities are also useful to each job class (unlike COD's killstreak rewards that penalize you if you're a lower-ranked player), and the guns are varied enough that it's a combination of skill and weaponry.

I can't speak for Killzone 3's single-player, though, since I have only played it once and never bothered to touch it again. The multiplayer experience is just too engrossing.

Well, the reason I picked up MW2 last year was because of their list of real weapons, and the popularity of the franchise; popularity means there's always someone playing in multiplayer. (That, and I was excited to hear they put in the TAR-21... wanted to get my virtual hands on that baby.)

For example, I like going into multiplayer and seeing the Desert Eagle there because I know exactly what it does and how it operates, having operated one before. Sure, the details may not be entirely accurate, but at least it's there.

I don't really get all that with games like KZ3, unless the M4 magically turned into a revolver (according to Google). But I'll still check it out. One of my boys got a copy.

My gripe with COD is that, while the weapons are real, the gameplay itself is unrealistic. It's an arcade shooter masked in simulation-like dressings. While Killzone 3 is a fantasy sci-fi shooter, the guns themselves operate as real-world weapons do. The recoil is visible on-screen and each gun has its own weight and feel. While I will forever praise Black Ops for its level of customization for a shooter, I feel as if the COD franchise has diluted the quality of shooters and that Killzone 3 could be the new standard for what a shooter should be. I still think the single-player is imbalanced in the insurmountable odds you're given and the number of shots it takes to kill an enemy, but the multiplayer is just so well-done that I can forgive those single-player shortcomings.

Wow, I totally agree with that CoD comment. I could see that when I was playing. It really is like chickens running around with their heads cut off.

Maybe I'll look into the Tom Clancy lineup. Are those any good?

The Tom Clancy games are good but a little too realistic for my taste; dying after two or three shots, while true-to-life (to an extent), takes away from the gameplay experience when the odds are heavily stacked against you. Those games also require a little more teamwork and strategy than other shooters, and they aren't your traditional FPS. They're fun, but not when you're playing by yourself, IMO.

I've grown to despise COD despite loving the first Modern Warfare and liking elements of MW2. People now have this expectation that quality action = twitch-shooting and elaborate set pieces. I want there to be a purpose behind each class or loadout I select, and I feel as if Killzone 3 gives me more of that purpose than Black Ops does. While both games emphasize leveling-up, KZ3 doesn't penalize you for using a basic loadout with any class; you can win with any weapon and class ability, as long as you have the skill and patience to match. Black Ops seems to heavily favor those who spend days leveling up, and penalizes those who only play casually.

This is unrelated.

Because I'm bored at work and because I'm the network administrator, I just saw

THIS

and

THAT

"THIS" ain't quite FPS but looks like it'll be part of my collection... Same with "THAT".

CoD's going down.

In regards to the Battlefield series, it's slowly dethroning COD in terms of online multiplayer presence and overall popularity. While COD did great things for the FPS genre, there's been little tangible refinement to keep me hooked. There's been things that other shooters have done better to get me hooked. That is why I will forever praise Killzone 3, as it was such a huge leap from Killzone 2, which was a huge leap from the first Killzone. Though there's still things about KZ3 that irk me that I'd like to see changed, I at least have the faith in Sony and Guerilla Games that there'll be changes made in the next installment in a few years. The annual updates to COD, even with alternating developers, has done nothing to help keep me as a fan.

The reason why I praised Modern Warfare along with everyone else was because it was such a huge leap from the great COD3, and it's because of the lack of that quantum leap that I was lukewarm to World At War and MW2 and Black Ops.

Yep. I just traded in Black Ops toward preordering SOCOM 4. Battlefield 3 and SOCOM 4 will keep me busy for the year as far as competitive multiplayer shooters. I like shooters that require teamwork and skill which is something Battlefield promotes and I've been playing the hell out of the SOCOM 4 beta. You try to be a lone wolf in SOCOM you're not going to do too well. Can't wait until that and Battlefield comes out.

I don't know if you have played it, but if you haven't I would highly recommend Crysis over its sequel Crysis 2. Crysis 2 is just way too linear compared to the original.

Needless to say, it had to be dumbed down for the consoles.

So true. Battlefield owns the COD series as far as gameplay.

Those ridiculous COD melee kills get me the most; after seeing the various brutal melee kills in Killzone 3, complete with animations and everything, I can't take a random knife swipe seriously anymore. (LINK)

Aside from the three that were shown in that video, there's maybe 5 or 6 others on top of that. Sure beats COD's random "Hey, did he really hit me?" melees. (LINK)

Yeah, I just can't play MW2 anymore. I'm constantly in a state of "what the heck??-BS!!!" when I play the multiplayer. I mean, BS can only happen so many times...

I'm turning it in for a copy of GRAW-2.

Crysis was a good game.. just lacked a story.. but if your PC could handle it @ max graphics.. best in the biz, and you were free to do alot, haven't played Crysis 2 yet, but I plan to get it @ some point after price drops... $60 isn't worth it for an FPS to me now unless it completely blows me out of the water (battlefield 3) b/c most of the gameplay is relatively similar... and i find that to be disappointing

I would imagine so, you would lose alot of customization going from PC to console.... which I have to do now..... :(

I stand corrected on Crysis 2. I heard that it had bad lag and other issues but it's not as bad as people made it out to be. Crysis 2 is another great option and so far the campaign is breathtaking with it's amazing graphics and I'm loving it. Just picked it up.
