"Marc Bulger retired two years ago," said Hasselbeck. "He just doesn't know it."
Ron Jaworski said something similar at the start of the season. I, frankly, don't care because Bulger isn't going to be part of our team and, when he was, he didn't do anything. Non-story.

It's a non-story if you're looking to be offended as a Ravens fan, but I think it's a bit hypocritical of Matt Hasslebeck. He's never done much in his career and to be critical of a proven (albeit with a spotty career) starting caliber QB is plain dumb IMO.

Tim* Hasselbeck. He's being critical of Bulger's passion for the game, something that a more reputable (and successful) quarterback/pundit has questioned, too. Hasselbeck can be "critical" of Bulger, it's his job.

Any reputable and successful QB that may have worked with Bulger? It may be his job, but BSPN should have considered his lack of credibility in being critical of any other NFL player before they allowed that to be in his job description.

Maybe so. Take it for what it is, but Hasselbeck was only echoing the sentiments expressed by Ron Jaworski when he and the MNF crew interviewed Bulger back at the start of the season.

I can't really disagree with the assessment because, in all his time here, I haven't seen anything from Bulger - his fault, or not. If Marc Bulger was really looking to start, he wouldn't have come to Baltimore; he knew he was most likely going to be holding a clipboard all year.

You don't know what his options were and considering it's a sport, feeling dejected is going to happen. Look at Carson Palmer; his numbers haven't been all that great in his career and while he's willing to play, he's not willing to play for the Bengals. Bulger was on a franchise in decline and while the assessment may be true, my point is that Tim Hasselbeck is the last person, true or not, to be commenting on it. Job be damned and it's not the first time he's opened his blow hole about another player.

For me it goes back to the old, "people in glass houses..." saying. Tim was a failure as an NFL QB. Now he's a credible journalist all of a sudden? Please..

Add to that, Ozzie Newsome is someone who DOES have credibility and he thought Bulger was a good signing for his team. Of course you're not going to see much from him; he's the #2 guy behind a playoff winning, healthy #1 QB.

Bulger had options. He'd have them now, too. The Cardinals are still looking for a QB, 49ers, Panthers, there are tons of teams desiring a QB. And, considering the fact that it took nearly $4 million to get Bulger here, I'd say he was a commodity.

Hasselbeck may be the one of the worst people to ask for a QB assessment, aside from Ryan Leaf. And he may look like a clown while smack-talking Bulger, because of his own failure, but that doesn't keep him from having a point. Again, Jaworski said it before him.

I can't defend Bulger because I didn't see anything from him, here, and he had the same stigma coming from St. Louis. Most notably, D'Marco Farr questioned his leadership ability and locker-room influence. He even said Kyle Boller had more influence than Bulger in 2009 - that's about as damning a statement as I've ever heard, and I actually defended Boller while he was here.

If your beef is with ESPN hiring some football failures and letting them spew hypocrisy, I can't argue with you. It's the same network that gave Matt Millen, Keyshawn Johnson + Cris Carter (have to lump them together because they're both idiots), and some lesser-known cronies the same job and freedom...

ESPN and Tim Hasselbeck, yes.

I can see how Boller would be a better leader than Bulger. Leadership can be taught, but some folks are just born with it.

Boller was a tough kid who probably got so pity points because he stood in behind an awful OL and took all the shots, plus, he showed an occasional flash of brilliance.

EDIT: That's why I liked him - and my best guess as to why players may have liked him, too. No clue on his locker-room demeanor and such.

Ya gotta love the fighting spirit of a guy like that. Especially when he may lack some of the necessary tools, be it an o-line or some physical attribute.

Now why didn't I think of that. Brilliant!

Billick told him he had some tools, just wasn't ready yet...apparently Tim took that to mean he was qualified as an ESPN analysts on the NFL.

Is Tim Hasselbeck really the right guy to be offering his opinion on other NFL QBs who have actually made it?
