Ellerbe And Gooden To Return?

I wouldn't mind someone taking Gooden off our hands and giving us a third rounder in the process. There's some good mid-round talent out there.

Ellerbe and Gooden are exact opposites. Ellerbe is a much better prescence in the middle and tackler, but is awful dropping into coverage. Gooden is terrible tackling in the middle but actually good in coverage and might even be a great blitzer. We ideally want a hybrid of both these guys. I don't know where Jameel McClain falls into this mix because imo he is the worst of the 3. What sets him apart is that he is very consistant, you know what you're getting from him every play...but the the problem is that he is mediocre ILB. He had so much potential as a pass rusher i have no idea what he is doing starting at ILB. I really wouldn't mind of all 3 of these guys didn't come back because then it would give a guy like Jason Phillips an opportunity...he was one of those TCU products that were highly regarded in the draft before his injury.

Jason Phillips is basically an Ellerbee with much worse pass drops according to reports. And McClain imo is the best one of the three. He is consistent, can rush the passer from the ILB spot, has a decent drop and can tackle.

He isn't great but he gets the Job done. It should be either him or Ellerbee starting next year (unless Gooden magically discovers how to shed blocks and be tough in the middle).

Nothing Gooden has shown me suggests he's any good in coverage.

Jameel McClain was given a second round tender according to Aaron Wilson. I think he is the most consistent young LB we have, I am glad the we will be keeping him around.

The tweet from Wilson

The tenders work as such...

The 'original round' designation for Gooden gives him a one-year deal with a relatively low base salary. If another team wants to match the Ravens' offer or give him more, and Gooden and the Ravens agree (by not matching the offer), the Ravens would get a third rounder for compensation, because Gooden was selected in the third.

The low tender for Ellerbe gives him a one-year contract for an even lower amount of money, if another team wants to match the Ravens or offer him more, and they agree, he is free to go to that team and the Ravens wouldn't receive anything, because he wasn't drafted.

They're taking a risk with Ellerbe, apparently.

great breakdown Berad. you cleared it up nicely. thanks!

How are they "taking a risk with Ellerbe"? We're talking about an undrafted guy who rarely went on the field last yr, we don't gain anything... but we don't exactly lose anything either.

I would argue that he's our best ILB behind Ray Lewis. He's not some bum. I would have at least given him a second round tender, to ensure no team makes a run at him.
