Ellerbe And Gooden To Return?

40 posts in this topic

According to Aaron Wilson, both Ellerbe and Gooden have received tenders and will be restricted free agents.

I'm still unsure how tenders work but I think it's safe to assume both will return.

Ellerbe returning is good news. I would have let Gooden go but if the team wants to give him another year to not only stay healthy but actually contribute defensively, so be it.

I'm glad that Ellerbe is back. I really want him to be the full time starter next to Ray. As for Tarvaris, depth is depth I suppose.

The tweet from Wilson
The Ravens have sent out restricted tenders, including the low tender for Dannell Ellerbe and original round tender for Tavares Gooden.
The tenders work as such...

The 'original round' designation for Gooden gives him a one-year deal with a relatively low base salary. If another team wants to match the Ravens' offer or give him more, and Gooden and the Ravens agree (by not matching the offer), the Ravens would get a third rounder for compensation, because Gooden was selected in the third.

The low tender for Ellerbe gives him a one-year contract for an even lower amount of money, if another team wants to match the Ravens or offer him more, and they agree, he is free to go to that team and the Ravens wouldn't receive anything, because he wasn't drafted.

They're taking a risk with Ellerbe, apparently.

Thanks for the info berad.

With Jameel an exclusive rights free agent and both Gooden and Ellerbe now likely to return, I wonder if the team will still draft an ILB early.

If they see one they like, I wouldn't doubt it. It wouldn't be an issue, cap-wise, to cut one or more of these RFAs

EDIT: PFT is reporting it, too. Apparently, the LBs tenders will be worth a little more than $1 million.

Jamal's boy is coming back lol! Still think they need a ILB around the 4th round area.
So do I. Hopefully, it's Kelvin Sheppard.

Very excited to see that Ellerbe is returning, hopefully he can stay a Raven for a long time.

Hopefully Gooden can live up to his expectations and flash some playmaking ability, I'm guessing the FO is just giving this guy one more chance.

Me as well, he's my guy in the late rounds, quality player quality leader.

This year's ILB class is very underwhelming, the only player I really like is Greg Jones and he wont drop past the 2nd.

When Ellerbe plays I wonder if head office sees the same things we do.
The coaches see the same things but they just had to send a message after the Falcons game. Benching him for multiple contests wasn't the right move in my opinion though.

His stock is actually falling and he would not fit the 3-4.

how would he not fit the 3-4? If his stock falls thats great but there's no way he slips past the 2nd round. The only knock on him that I can see is he is a bit undersized.

I like the move by the Ravens since Gooden is going for a cheap contract and if any team wants him they have to give up a 3rd. I just hope that no team gives us a run for our money with Ellerbee.

I personally like Casey Matthews since we are talking about late round ILB's

I'm happy to see that the team have made an effort to bring back Ellerbe. Gooden, not so much. I think this is his last audition year before he's gone however.

You think that the Ravens should draft an ILB early ER20?

We should have kept Barnes, he was the only playmaker of the young LB's, with Ellerbe being the next closest.

I couldnt understand trading away Barnes either that was a stupid move. Gooden will be gone after this year tho because he hasnt an wont do anything similar to Harper plenty of wasted talent.

Even when Gooden is on the field he doesn't play like a Ravens, he's more like a Bill or Bronco. But at least he's keeping DWill's old wheelchair busy.

He is too small and his technique when it comes to taking on blockers would get him took out of a lot of plays. He has trouble shedding blocks. He could but his talents are better suited for the 4-3.

I'm torn. Both McClain and Ellerbe have the physical tools to be good ILBs. But the team won't ever know if they can truly do it if they aren't on the field. However, there are a few ILBs in the draft I wouldn't mind seeing the Ravens take.

Whatever happens, the team needs someone to nail down the Jack LB position next season and another player to start pushing Ray for snaps in passing situations.

I agree that someone does need to nail down that spot next to Ray, and McClain did a good job last year, however I wouldn't be opposed to moving him back outside and starting Ellerbe inside.

I do think we have other, more pressing needs that need to be addressed than ILB however because I don't see someone who is a clear cut better than McClain or Ellerbe that wouldn't require a high draft pick. The pass rush and the offensive line should command much of our early attention.

Actually he shows pretty good blockshedding moves for an ILB and uses his leverage, and hands to get off blocks. He also has good speed to get outside.

He is the best LB in the draft in terms of versatility IMO. I know Ozzie and Co. will be taking a serious look at him in the second rd.

So what if he only 6'0?

I and others would like to see Jameel moved back to his natural position but I doubt the coaches will do it.

I agree with your second point.

I think he would fit our team well for just that reason, Ngata, Cody, Redding etc can occupy blockers and let him be a playmaker. I have seen him projected as a 4-3 backer, but in my opinion he would be a good fit. I also think as he gets stronger and learns from the best, shedding blockers will become less of an issue.

If only there were a team dumb enough to give us a 3rd round pick for Gooden.
