I Dont Think Wr Should Be Our Priority This Draft...

74 posts in this topic

All this talk about the need for Wr in the draft i say we skip Wr we have so many and we never use them let's look. Brandon Jones Wr who is that??? , next Wr Marcus Smith?? when is the last time you saw him?? Justin harper WR still sitting?? and now some other guy we just signed 6'5 WR injury prone. Great!!!
David Reed - Rookie
Mason, Boldin
TJ and donte could leave.
Now you tell me do you think we need another rookie to sit on the bench for yrs like Harper or Smith
To me it just seems like we like to collect Wr and use the same old guys in the same old way, never trying anyone new. How do they expect the rookies on the bench to get better if they don't play except in preseason. let's face it Harper and Smith have been riding the bench for at least 3 yrs to me that's to long it's either do or die, make it or leave if you don't have confidence in them buy now you never will. If TJ goes i would promote one of these guys and let him sink or swim. Draft pics for Oline ,pass rusher, Dline, center, QB

I hope you don't mean a new starter.

I agree that we have a lot of guys who are mainly 'camp bodies' with the occasional ST contribution. This has always been a problem with the Ravens though, we never seem to hit gold with WRs in the draft. Which is why most of the clamouring for a WR recently has been for a high (maybe even first round) pick.

You lost me here. The team shouldn't draft a WR because there are two WRs who were out of football last season under contract, a career practice squad player and another who hasn't caught a pass in the NFL?

As for Harper and Smith, one has been on the practice squad and the other primarily special teams contributer for good reason.

Harper got hurt his rookie season and then had a prime opportunity to make the team in '09 but didn't rise to the challenge. With Boldin, Houshmandzadeh and Stallworth being brought in last year, unless he contributed on special teams, there was no place for him.

Smith was a rookie in '08 and being on on the most run-heavy team in the league with a rookie QB taking snaps, it's not surprising he didn't catch a pass. He missed all of '09 with a torn ACL. With the veteran influx at WR this past season, he wasn't going to contribute outside of special teams.

I want to see young WRs be given more opportunities on this team like we see with other teams. However, let's not pretend there are WRs on the team brimming with potential.

Ummm... I'm pretty sure Harper has sat on the bench because he can't catch a ball and Smith may not have had a oppurtunity but he obviously didn't look good enough in practice to get a catch at WR.

And saying an early round reciever wouldn't be as good as Harper or Smith would be very very very very unlikely unless we drafted a huge bust. The only guy I think worth mentioning with mad potential is Hardy but it is doubtful he can stay healthy anyway.

I think WR is a concern with so many potential FAs on the team. Personally, I would love for the Ravens to draft Tandon Doss in rounds 2-3. Best hands in the draft, knows how to separate, a high character guy and deceptively fast at 6-3. I wonder why more people aren't talking about him.

I think OL is a bigger priority though and we should either target Carimi or Pouncey.

I think we'll take either AJ Green or Julio Jones in Round 1, but neither fall to us. We'll take Leonard Hankerson or Titus Young in Round 2, but neirther fall. Thus we take a WR in Round 3 or later.

Boldin has not lost a step. I was jumping up and down everytime Boldin was open last year, instead Flacco was looking at the wrong receiver and then dumping it off to Rice or heap. The 2nd half of the season teams put their #1 cbs on mason (their coach said specifically they were more worried about mason because he is flaccos go to guy) and #2 cbs on boldin. In the last 2 steelers games (i watched them with a couple steelers fans) and they were yelling at the tv because boldin was wide open and for some reason they put ike taylor on mason. But it turned out to be a great idea because Flacco threw to mason and dumped it off to everyone except the wide open boldin and the ravens lost the games.

rice is not his last read, he is afraid to look downfield and is ready to dump it off to rice in a heartbeat instead of trying to make a play. if you don't want to believe that opinion fine, look at the stats, ray rice has been the leading receiver on the ravens each of the last 2 seasons.
1 - How do you know what his progressions and reads were? You don't.

2 - His looking downfield to receivers in air tight coverage caused him to hold on to the ball for too long numerous times last season.

Honestly, your unsubstantiated, Flacco bashing rant is just stupid.

I'd prefer a guy like Greg Little in the third, as opposed to burning a 1st/2nd on a player of similar quality.

It's not likely but Julio could fall due to a slow 40 and durability concerns. Hankerson could be there in the second

I like Hankerson from Miami. Do you guys think hell be there when we pick in the 2nd round. I don't want the Ravens to use there 1st round pick on a WR. I want either oline/de/cb in the first round

We need a different type of receivers. We need to have a good core, the receiving core is not the some of the parts but the whole.

David Reed- Route runner "tough guy" reminds me of mason.
Boldin- Catch and play
James Hardy-...really tall redzone guy. Probably has his speed back, so decent stretch the field.
We need a speed stretch the field deep threat.

not to nit-pick.... but if I so much as say the word "bum" using an A and a couple S's it gets edited, but I click play on an imbeded link on the site and get to hear Tupac saying f--k, n---a, etc etc.... just seems odd...

And no, I don't believe WR should be atop our list of draft needs

Both Boldin and Mason struggled to get open at times this season. The Ravens need to add a Torrey Smith or Titus Young to stretch the field and open it up for Boldin and/or Mason. Or resign Stallworth. That would work as well.

Aaron rodgers has arguably the worst protection in the nfl, that doesnt stop him from making those throws, and he doesn't have half the talent at receiver
Aaron Rodgers also doesnt throw to three recievers who are virtually clones of one another either. We had a speed guy who sat on the bench, we had young guys who never got on the field. We used three vet posession wide recievers, and Heap to move the ball. Those guys take time to get open... something Joe does not happen. Now is Joe Rodgers? no, but he is not a bad QB either.

Yea, I wouldn't want us going with a WR in the 1st round, I say pass rusher b/c that's the main thing we need opposite of Suggs and the D would really benefit from that, especially our secondary. We need to start playing these wrs in the game, I'm sure Jordy Nelson and many other wrs wasn't just tearing it up in camp to get playing time, pretty sure the coaches factor in a little faith in their decision to play them and that can be said about many other wrs in the league. I wouldn't even use a 2nd round pick on a Wr unless one can fall to us that's game ready now.
