Ravens Franchise Haloti Ngata

The difference between the 2 franchise tags is that the non-exclusive Tag which Ngata received does allow him to sign an offer sheet with another team, which the Ravens can either match or take 2 1st round picks. That Tag comes with a salary that is the average of the top 5 at that position as paid in 2010.

The exclusive tag with Manning got does not allow him to negotiation with other team or sign an offer sheet. It pays him the top 5 for the players at his position based on 2011 salaries. But, in Manning's case since he was already one of the highest paid last year, he gets 120% of his 2010 salary, since that is higher than the average of the top 5 salaries.

Just got the text message, this is great news!

How much you think we will have to pay him? How many years?

I say 6-8 Years for about $70 Million with $42 Million Guaranteed. Give him a 10 year contract for all I care, just make sure this is one of the last contracts he ever signs.

This was what I remember giving him in franchise mode in madden. Although I dont remember if it was $48 guaranteed or not. (Yes I know madden makes no difference, it was just a coincidence that JO said that with what I actually did in madden)

When I first saw it was a non-exclusive tag, it scared the beep out of me. But then it got me thinking.
What if this is a way of letting him "test" the market and see what kind of contract he can expect. If some team is crazy enough to offer him a contract, then he knows what he's worth, the FO knows what he's worth, and then we just match the contract and make him a Raven for life earlier than expected.

That's a good way of putting it. I was trying to figure out why most teams went with the non-exclusive tag, but I think your explanation makes a lot of sense.

FYI, this is what the Tag cost is looking like:

DT
2010 - 7M
2011 Non- exclusive- 12.3M (Projected)
2011 Exclusive - TBD

The Jump from 2010 to 2011 was in thanks to Albert's contract and the fact that Richard Seymour was classified as a DT (and he had a pricey franchise tag).

The Exclusive is too hard to project because of the CBA, who re-signs, who has the Franchise Tag stick. If Seymour gets stuck with the Tag two years in a row, the Exclusive could go up.

But it just doesn't make sense because it seems like 2010 which was an uncapped year was sort of freakish for DT salaries. Haynesworth contract took full advantage of the uncapped year in 2010. It just seems to me that the the Exclusive Tag might come down a bit for DT.

Well Ngata is a DE technically. We all know he is a NT but we moved him to DE and he has always been there and i don't see that changing once Cody takes over for gregg. So shouldn't his salary be different?

With the contracts top pass rushers at DE get that Tag would end up costing a lot more than it already does.

The Ravens officially assigned the franchise tag to two-time Pro Bowler Haloti Ngata on Tuesday, keeping him with the team and allowing both sides time to work on a long-term contract extension once a new collective bargaining agreement is in place.

"The tender allows us to secure Haloti as a Raven right now," stated General Manager Ozzie Newsome. "As we have said, our intention is to enter into a long-term contract with him. We want him to be a Raven."

Would Paea be a good pick as a potential replacement for Haloti if they cant reach a long term deal. or are people confortable with cody as a NT who could replace Haloti?

Paea is a 4-3 DT and could maybe project as a 3-4 DE, not a NT. Ngata's going to be signed long-term so the point is moot.
