Redskins Grab Taylor

5 posts in this topic

News tonight is that the Skins have grabbed Jason Taylor very quickly after Philip Daniels going down early this morning.

This is why I feel we should try hard to get Favre; the Skins are a good team with their only weakness being their D-line in years past. Now they look real good. The Ravens are a good team with their only weakness being their QB in years past. Why not get a good veteran (arguably great) to try to take them to the promise land

Because carrying Favre's contract (even restructured) would mean less money to re-sign Terrell Suggs, Bart Scott, and Ray Lewis, among others, next offseason.

In addition, there's no guarantee that Favre can reproduce the success of last year, and frankly, this team is already in the mindset of building for the future while still being equipped to win NOW.

Plus, what happens to the QB competition? Even if Kyle Boller is considered by many to be the odd man out, what happens to both Troy Smith and Joe Flacco?

Both players won't want to sit on the bench for long, and this team needs to see NOW if either one is ready to lead Baltimore into the playoffs in the near-future.

Basically, acquiring Favre is thinking too short-term, with no long-term gain. Sure, the team MIGHT luck out and get to the playoffs, but what happens if there's no Super Bowl win at the end of the season? There's no "better luck next year" in that case, especially if Favre ends up retiring again -- leaving the team back at square one, where we're at now.

I would love Favre to play for Baltimore. "Only" to have him mentor Flacco and Smith. I would not try and go after him for a trade at all though. The only way Favre would even have a chance to come to Baltimore, is if Packers release him. Let's not jump to the conclusion here though. The Packers WILL NOT release him at all.

As for the Redskins getting Taylor, congratulations! Me personally, I think they gave up too much for him though. Then again we are talking about Mr. Snyder here...He loves to blow his draft picks. I guess desperate times calls for desperate measures.

Hmm...since Taylor is worth a 2nd round pick, I wonder if we could get a 1st round pick+ for Lewis. :P Just a figure of speech. I'm not one of the ones to vote for Lewis to be traded at all.

Personally, I think it's a win-win situation for all three parties involved.

The Redskins only have to give up a 2nd round pick in next year's draft, and a 6th round pick in 2010; generally, 6th round picks aren't expected to amount to much (keyphrase: GENERALLY), and at least it wasn't a 1st round pick that was given up. Washington isn't the same trigger-happy team it used to be in the offseason, and it's not as the team can't make up for that 2nd round pick with some nifty draft-day trades. In addition, the Redskins get an immediate upgrade at a position that suffered a major blow with the loss of starter Phillip Daniels.

The Dolphins, meanwhile, get to move on without the distraction of Taylor's absence from team activities, and they acquire more draft picks, which Bill Parcells is always in favor of. Miami's already gotten rid of half its roster, so losing one more player is of no consequence, even with Taylor's talent, because they're still expected to be in a rebuilding stage anyway.

And Jason Taylor gets to play for a defense that MIGHT be better-suited to his skills. But even if the defensive scheme isn't to his liking, he still gets what he wants because he's in a new uniform with a fresh start, in a highly-competitive division that's annually up for grabs (unlike the Patriots-dominated AFC East).
