Going To The Ground Penalty

30 posts in this topic

After Green Bay scored a defensive touch down the flag was thrown for unsportsmanlike (fire fox says that is one word) conduct. Going to the ground, something something.

Am I to understand because he knelt down after the touchdown that is a penalty?

Is that what really took place or an I missing something?

When Mendenhall scored, I saw more excessive celebration there than this stupid call.

Its the Superbowl, let these guys enjoy the game to an extent.

OT: You remember in 2007 the NFL started penalizing teams for spiking the ball after a TD. I think the Ravens were the only team to get flagged multiple times for that infraction (other teams seemed to spike the ball but never get flagged - talk about inconsistent). But then that call just disappeared.

I don't know why I brought that up.

I thought he could be on his knee(s) but if one of his teammates touched him or was involved with it, it's considered a penalty?

Way I heard it was ONE knee was acceptable, two knees was not. Within the field of play only. Also, he cannot lay down on his back (or stomach I suppose).

Group celebrations are illegal as well. Anything that utilizes the ball as a prop too.

It's dumb. I like celebrations.

I agree. Celebrations are fun and should be allowed to an extent. Group celebrations can be really funny. Its the TO Ocho celebrations that need to be halted. Their fun too, but a line needs to be drawn.

Some celebrations are good and genuine, some are overblown. I don't think they can make that determination off how many knees touch the ground. Dumb rule, I agree.

It's a child's game being played by athletic entertainers. They need to get rid of some of these penalties/fines. If anything make the excessive celebration a time constraint. "10 seconds to celebrate or you get flagged"

"Excessive Celebration" penalties are absurd, especially in the Super Bowl! Mendenhall threw the ball in the stands and hypothetically could have hurt someone... that penalty needs to get reviewed and repealed.

It's fun for people watching but it's considered incendiary and disrespectful to opposing players. Remember the TO celebration on the Dallas star about 10 years ago? one of the Dallas players retaliated and it turned into a huge spectacle that embarrassed the league.

I think you can do whatever you want, as long as it fits into the play clock. I.e. You have 40 seconds after the TD has been called to get the PAT. If you want to waste time doing a celebration and not getting off the field, great for you. Just don't take forever doing it.

What I want to know is how something that miniscule can warrant a penalty but attempting to push Tramon Williams into the football didnt warrant anything

You'd think going to and participating in the Super Bowl would be something people would be excited for. You can't let these players just wreak havoc all over the field. I'm sorry, but going to your knees on the field is absolutely the worst, most disrespectful thing a player could do.

Unless they're kneeling to pray, that is. In fact, that would be the best, most respectful thing a player can do. Show them how it's done DA

That was some serious praying.

Actually by rule, that could have been a penalty. Glad it wasn't, and IMO it shouldn't, but that was outside the rules.

I remember Jared Allen got his NASCAR undies in a twist because the rule meant he couldn't do his "hogtie" sack dance anymore.

As someone already said, you can kneel if you're praying but other than that its an automatic flag. "Pray" does tend to be interpreted differently though.

You can take one knee on the field. Otherwise you need to be off the field of play. Two knees, praying or not, is against the rules.

Anything short of severing a teammate's head should be allowed. Isn't the Goodell League trying to make incentives to up the score anyway?
