Arthur Jones

Am I the only one that thinks that we are blowing DE situation out of proportion?

The purpose of a 3-4 DE is not to get to the quarterback on a consistent basis, it is mainly to eat up blocks.

Next year, I am predicting Arthur Jones to make the move to 3-4 DE. He has the right combination of size 6'3, 310lbs, with 35 inch + arms and with 18 months removed from his knee injury, and a torn pectoral muscle in college he will be ready.

Remeber this guy was once reguarded as a late 1st-2nd rd prospect before his senior year was cut short. He is used to taking on double teams from the inside and was a great wrestler. He is also the brother of UFC's Jon "Bones" Jones who is a heck of an athelete.

I feel that all he really needs is some coaching to expand his pass rushing moves because he knows how to stuff the run and show some good quickness for a 300+ pound man. Recorded a record 38.5 tackles for loss at Syracuse.

If there is anything we need on Defense it is a OLB pass rusher to be opposite of Suggs, and if Kindle actually can play we will have that.

I think your right, Honestly I didn't mind Redding and even Kruger in there, but we were definatley missing something. I think we need a little better playmaker for our #1 over there, but Jones could very well be that guy. Personally I think our most pressing issues on D is OLB, and ILB, and if we wish to upgrade CB.

I think the main reason people are clamoring for a 3-4 DE is because of the sheer amount of talent at the position in the draft this season.

Despite seeing very limited action this season, the team has high hopes for Jones. I'm hoping he can step up and at the very least platoon with Redding next season before overtaking him later in the year.

Agreed, but that could mean that we don't need to use a draft pick there, and still be improving our team. Hell maybe afew other teams take DE's leaving some great WR/OLB/CB/OT talent at our position in the first and second rounds.

Arthur Jones played very well but didn't get a lot of snaps, in any case if the best graded available is a DE then we have to take that DE.

That's tough to predict right now. Jones has potential but the team may not feel he's good enough to warrant passing on a player like Clayborn or Watt.

Move JJ to inside backer and draft a great OLB and put Jones at DE would be fine with me.

For some reason I just don't like Jones. So the stubbornness in me is gonna say I don't believe he'll be something before he actually shows something on the field. Don't remember him making any plays in the preseason.

He recorded a tackle in each game and a half sack against the Giants.

I'm really excited for this guy, I think he's got great potential. However, I still think we should keep him as one of our "can play anywhere along the D-line guys" a bit like Ngata, just probably not as well. I also think if a talented DE falls to us in the draft we should take him anyway, we do need more quality youth injected to the defensive front.

He's a great worker and is, apparently, very talented. We didn't get to see him because we had a backlog of quality players on the defensive line this season, it was hard for him to get any PT. I'm hoping he steps up in his second season.

I really like Arthur Jones, and as much as i love Kruger, i think Jones is our LE of the future. From the college clips iv'e seen on him, he dominates the LOS, he fights double teams well, and he's fantastic at using his hands and "getting skinny" to get off blocks. I actually think he fits a 4-3 scheme better, I think he could be a solid 3tech DT, but the DE's in our scheme are used as a 3tech DT. I really dont know why he didnt play more, other than the logjam of dlinemen. It may be because of Harbaugh's issue with playing rookies, but idk. But, if there is an improvement at DE, we should take him. Honestly, I think Jones could have a better career than someone like Allen Bailey, who plays with zero technique.

Jones should make at least a great backup, which will be important. Having enough guys to rotate in and out will make for a very effective front seven. So with Jones and Cody going into their second year, I think we'll be set.

I'd still like to draft more defensive guys to stack the D, but that's just me.

I went back and watched some more games of Jones. I came away so impressed that I don't think 3-4 DE is a need. Jones needs to be the starter next year.

I really think so too.

He has a really good attitude as well. Which is intriguing for a player whose draft stock fell after injury.

I think he should get down to around 295-300 so he can gain alittle more pop off the snap, which shouldn't be a problem because he struggled to get up to 310-315 apparently.

I always wondered about little Arthur. I am not a college person, so I know little to nothing 'bout college football. But it sounds like we got good draft picks... now makes me wonder how does Belichick do it?

I think Jones was one of the best value picks in the draft last year. Worst case scenario, he's excellent depth. Best case scenario, he becomes a Cory Redding type player. He'll never be an 8 to 10 sack a year guy, but he can contribute. Ravens fans, myself included, miss that pass rush we had when Trevor Pryce racked up 12 sacks from the 3-4 DE position, Bart Scott got 10, and Suggs had 8 or so. You can get a pass rush from that position. I don't think it'll come from Jones, so I think that you still have to consider DE a need in the draft. That having been said, I like Jones and look forward to seeing him grow.

I think another reason for so many talking about a DE is because of the mayhem it could potentially release having Suggs freed up more, or Suggs helping others get freed up.

His ceiling is a lot higher than Redding.

I don't know much about Jones. I just hope this team gives him a chance to show what he can do. I feel like our coaches trust veterans way to much and neglect the youth that is on our team. There needs to be a better balance. Get some of the younger guys in more rotations.

You guys have me excited about Jones now.

Haha maybe just better than Jones, then? Would you put Jones above Ngata, Gregg, McKinney, Redding, Kruger, or Cody? Only so many spots for DL on gameday. Divens and Jones played two games, each, so I guess they're interchangeable.

I'd like to see more of Tavalou. But I doubt that ever happens. Kelly and Ngata could be known as the Poly connection. Kelly can come back cheaply.

Maybe he'll give you his address :P he was on IR all last season, which wasn't great for him. He's a huge load, though, maybe similar to Kemoeatu when we had him? I also find it funny that we have two "Kelly" DTs

I liked the Jones pick in the 6th round, incredible value. I dont know if he should start next year, but I think we need to start actually utilizing these young players we have and stop signing veteran stop gaps yearly.

Agreed. This team has to strike a better balance with their win-now mentality and letting young players show what they can do.
