Target This Shutdown Corner?

51 posts in this topic

Champ Bailey will become a FA this offseason and he's looking for a contender. We're looking for a shutdown corner. Perfect match. Champ is still among the elite cornerbacks in the league (right behind Revis and Asomugha). He actually shadowed Dwayne Bowe when he was hot and scoring touchdowns like crazy. He finished the game with 0 catches. Also he's got upside as a safety. In a few years he said he'd like to move to safety, similar to what Rod Woodson did for us. Right now though he's too good of a corner to be moved to safety.

I think he'd settle for less money and join a contender like us. I really loved what Josh Wilson showed at the end of the season as well as in the playoffs, I think he is a starter in this league. Either that or a terrific nickel back with Foxworth returning next season.

Anyway would you like the FO to go after Bailey? Or draft a corner in the 1st and stick with Foxworth & Wilson?

Carr was our most consistent CB all season. We already have Carr, Wilson and Webb plus Foxworth returning. I just don't see CB as one of our glaring needs.

I'd rather see the team draft a CB if they're unable to re-sign both Wilson and Carr.

Whatever happens, addressing the pass rush is paramount.

Too old and too injury prone but he can still get the INT's but his last couple of seasons in Denver were less than impressive.

You guys can have Nhamdi or Champ, but I'd like to see us go after Grimes out of Atlanta. High value: less money.

He made the Pro Bowl and he's like 27 or something. If you think "less money" you have to look for something else. I can guarantee you that he will be getting more than Bailey, or any FA corner out there not named Asomugha.

I've been big on Grimes for the last 2 years. He's by far one of the best CBs in terms of attacking the ball in the air, and make a habit of running his opponent WRs route for them. The reason his name isn't brought up in Baltimore is because like most of our CBs, he isn't physical at the line of scrimmage. Size wise, he's almost identical to Chris Carr, so it's definitely not the big, physical CB most fans would prefer. If the Steelers would sign him, however, would that impact the decision on re-signing Ike Taylor? Because if they were both present in your secondary, they would complement each other almost perfectly. But if it turns into choosing one over the other, you should probably hang on to Ike since he knows the system, and upgrade his counterpart position via the Draft.

We're in talks with Ike now. But Ike IS our physical guy and in our scheme our other CB's play off off the WR which actually makes Grimes a good fit.

Still, we typically don't sign FA's and with us needing OL and DL this year (due to age and contracts), I think any FA will be from one of those two areas.

Didn't our corners shadow Bowe and pretty much take him out of the game too?

Yes, and that's exactly what I was saying when I stated that Taylor and Grimes would be perfect complements to each other. I was just remarking that because the Ravens don't have a physical CB like Ike Taylor, Grimes' name doesn't usually come up in conversation, you know? Hopefully, he has a secret grudge against Pittsburgh and refuses to consider you guys lol

Signing older players like Bailey or Takeo Spikes may not be the thing to do. The team should look at getting a little younger not older.

Ahh, I see. Well, then I agree with you 95%! Aside from the grudge thing. lol

No. Our secondary is fine, and we need YOUNG defensive players. If we get a CB at all, we need to draft him. He's too old.

I'd stay away from Bailey.

The only guy who we should really try for is Jonathan Joesph. He probably wants out of Cincy (who wouldn't), knows the AFC North and we wouldn't have to worry about playing against him anymore.

In all honesty, the more I think about it, the less I believe that we should go after a corner in FA. I'd be perfectly fine with taking one in the first round of the draft, but I don't think that there are many FA corners that's a clear cut above the guys we already have here and whose price tag could be justified.

I wouldn't have a problem bringing him in for the right price.

But there are only 2 shutdown corners in the NFL, and Bailey isn't one of them anymore.

While agree that going younger is better, having key veteran leadership is key. I think any coach will tell you the same.

Only if we lose one of our corners we already have, and only if Asumguah is to high of a price, but other than that pass rush I think is more important

If C. Bailey is interested in playing here for a reasonable amount of cash, sure but he is to old to even slightly crack the piggy bank!

I never believe lip service. Doesn't want to hinder a big contract from his team at all. Only time I believe a guy is when he says he wants to leave. He could really solidify our secondary.

After Nnamandi, he will be the most sought after CB. He will command Robinson type money from last year, so its highly unlikely we give him that contract.

I agree. I know we wouldn't be able to afford him. But he's like the one guy I wouldn't mind trying to get.
