Computer Crashed, Need Help

22 posts in this topic

Well, my computer crashed on me this morning. I had important software that was used to create music. I lost that file, lost the individual music files, and now I'm screwed. Is there anyway I could get the software back, with everything still intact, or should I move on with my life?

The software is called "Fruity Loops 8". It's a music software used by producers. I lost all the songs I've ever made so if anyone can help bring everything back, I'd really appreciate it.

I can only suggest that in the future back up your most important files. How old is your computer?

Yeah, I would recommend asking Fly, but from the sound of it, if they were Fruity Loops files and not mp3s or other regular audio files, you might have a hard time recovering them since those files (I believe) are saved in fragments rather than one complete file like audio files are.

That absolutely killed me. I should have done that, but I'm so thick-headed and thought that it would never happen to me. My computer is like two years old. It's a really nice HP, so we must have gotten a damn virus.

Did you delete system 32?

System 32?

What's your computer doing? Is it showing any signs of life?
It's on as I'm typing this. I'm able to get online because we did a reboot. I have to go in and DL everything again, such a pain.

If you still have any problems, ask fly. He's the computer guy around here.
Dammit Fly, get in this thread!

I know, I'm screwed because FL only takes .FL files, not MP4 or 3. Therefore it's not like I can get the songs off of my iPhone and put them back on iTunes, then upload to FL then wahlah, I have the bars and sounds like nothing happened. What's worst and what made me pull a hole in the wall is that the music was complex so it's going to be time consuming to put back every little detail and start from scratch. I'm thinking about just giving up and downloading Reason 5 and see what I can do there. I just need to find someway to actually recover FL

I'm not an expert of any sort, but have had to be my own tech support for a very long time. I've looked for a solution. The only thing that comes up is software called Recover My Files. Did you say you lost the software as well? You should be able to download from FL Studio website if you have proof of purchase. You might be able to find someone that had the same problem and the solution on the FL Studio site as well.

I hope Fly is more helpful.

The thing is, my friend (who's a professional with computers) actually downloaded the software without paying for it, so I can't go to the website and ask for a free DL. He's coming over if I can't recover the software, and something tells me that it will be next to impossible getting back FL with all of my songs in it. Thank you for the help though, I really appreciate it.

Sounds like he had to wipe the drive in order to do a fresh reboot, so I doubt there's any chance of recovery at this point. Even then, unless the drive is mounted and loaded onto another computer, it'd be difficult to extract the files he's speaking of because of the way the program fragments and compresses them to save space.

Are you able to run it at all? What are the symptoms? Just doesn't turn on?

Have you tried running a hijackthis log?

Also, you use Fruity Loops? How long have you been doing that? If I may ask.

It's a new computer so I'm starting to think I got a virus. I can get on but it's slower than hell even after I did a reboot so I have to go in and start from scratch. Thinking about buying a laptop now for moments like these lol.

I've been using FL since my junior year in High School, so four years now. Thinking about upgrading to Reason 5

Buy a Macintosh brah! Problem solved. Really, I feel PC's are very unreliable in terms of being susceptible to Viruses and just overall performance.....unless you buy an extremely strong/ex[ensive one, or build your own. Get a Mac, I have had 2 of them since 2003 and both are still running strong! Zero problems and if they do ever "Break" they are very inexpensive to get repaired!

While I was looking for possible fixes for his problem. (I'm a computer geek that way) I came across some forums that expressed some challenges creating music on Macs. Some mentioned needing extra equipment to be able to use the disk drive to input sound. Some found that most of the industry they interacted with used PC. The software more expensive, among some complaints. Though I did see those that after they figured out the Mac and it's software they liked it. Huge debates about which is better.
I would suggest really researching whether the mac meets the requirements needed to produce music on an individual basis.
Don't get me wrong, I LOVE macs. Bought my first in 1993, bought the second in 2005 just because it was necessary to get the updated OS. The one thing I was upset about was 3D Max did not make compatible software for the Mac. I was taking very expensive classes that utilized 3D Max, was told Maya for Mac was close enough to relate. But nope. Had to do all class work at the school.

I can possibly help you out if you'd like. I'd need a few days but it can be done.

Try running this program if you can. It sounds like you have bad malware or spyware by the sounds of it.

http://free.antivirus.com/hijackthis/

That's if you'd like. Just send a copy of the log to my messages, if you want. Like I said, that's if you want a little help. I can't promise anything but I am more than sure I can remove most of your computers problems.

4 years experience, eh? So you should be able to make some pretty decent beats then. If I sent you a link to one of my tracks, think you could make one for me?

Mac's are sexy but I'm just not familiar with them. My friend brought his over a few months ago to work on some Pro Tools files, and I was like what in the world? I'm really honestly thinking about buying a mac though for a laptop. I just love the style. Thanks for the recommendation brotha

Don't Mac's come with Garage Band? I've heard that while it's not the most "professional" it still gets the job done. I can always produce in that and master/record in a program like Pro Tools or Reason. So you you're recommending a Mac as well?

Sweet! Should I still run this even after one of my family members have run some sort of virus software or something like that on it or would they both be similar? I think she ran just enough to clear the virus but my computer's modem makes all kind of noises and the Internet is a bit slow. Not sure how much she'll do but I'll ask as soon as I can. Obviously I have to get it back to speed just like it was. Thanks for the help Tre I'll have to run this software when I can, I'm currently on my iPhone...

But hell yea man, I'd be more than happy to help you out, I love music. Do you write?

Just a note on Macs and the claim that they cannot or do not get viruses, that's not true. All computers and anything that connects to a network of shared information can get a virus -- including smartphones.

The only reason why viruses aren't as common is because there's far more PC users than Mac users in the world, which makes it more profitable for hackers and phishers to go after PC users.

At a hacking competition a couple of years back, sponsored by a computer security company, one of the world's best hackers was able to crack a Mac in something like 10 seconds. So, yes, it's entirely possible for someone to hack into a Mac or program a virus targeting Macs if they really wanted to.

I for one have been aware that it is possible for macs to get viruses. But as Franchise pointed out, because there are fewer users they are not targeted.
That being said, I have used macs for 18 years now, at home and at work. I have yet to get a virus.

Every chance I get, I tell PC people to get a mac. I have used PC's for classes and at work, so I have been able to compare mac and pc's side by side. I had a friend that built and sold PC's. He watched me working on a mac, next thing you know he has one. My brother in-law works for Dell. One day he got so fed up with the home PC's crashing, he tossed them all and bought macs and has not gone back.

The debate between PC and Mac will be endless. It comes down to researching to see which will do what you want best.

That's the best way I can put it. Both operating systems do things well in their own right, but my preference has always been PC because I'm bigger on performance than aesthetics. However, Mac is made for simplicity and looks and is largely user-friendly. I'm a moderate power-user and a multi-tasker because of my various duties and my extensive work with multimedia, and in my experience, I've gotten better results with PC than Mac for my own needs. Keep in mind, it also depends on which manufacturer you purchase from; I've had horrible experiences with Dells (while my friends are the opposite), and then I've had great experiences with HP (while my friends are a mixed bag).

My biggest gripe with Mac has always been inflated pricing and their use of proprietary hardware and, to a lesser extent, software. I feel as if you're paying for a brand name rather than any true measure of increased reliability with Mac.

See now you have to be careful how you tag the other computers.
I have used Macs for graphics, web design, 2d-3D animation for years. It is built for more then just simplicity and looks/aesthetics. I run multiple programs and a multitude of windows at one time.
Simplicity and aesthetics are just another plus in my books.

Yeah, still run it. Malware / spyware has a way of hiding itself in your registry. This program will help detect them and get rid of them.

Just send a copy of your log, if you want. Give me a few days to check it over and I will get back to you.

Sounds good. I will send you one of my old tracks. Just tell me what you think. You can be honest. I love criticism more than anything. Most the stuff I do is free style and then I record in my house. Works out well for me. I have a few new tracks coming out next week.

I sent you two tracks. (Both 3rd verse.)
