Jon, quite clearly you have never heard of the Insane Clown Posse.

You mean the worst band ever?

You will always catch me listening to either metal (old and new) or 90's rock (usually grunge). Not a fan of rap too much, although i do like some Cypress Hill. Some of my favorite bands, Metallica, Pantera, Lamb of God, slayer, Messugah, Iron Maiden, Tool, Alice In Chains, Rage Against the Machine, Smashing pumpkins, Stone Temple Pilots and Guns N Roses. Also, just because I listen to this type of music, does not mean that I dress all crazy like. When I tell people what kinda music that I am into, they are usually like "really!?!?!?!". It's just music.

My tastes fall into R&B, then rap, then rock, then anything else that should catch my ear, in that order.

R&B calms me down, so that's why it'll always be my preferred genre. Joe, R. Kelly, Bobby Valentino, Raheem DeVaughn...I have a lot of favorites. I'll even delve into R&B/pop like The-Dream and Chris Brown, to an extent.

Rap, I'll listen to if it's on, but my tastes are very strict. I shy away from the underground since a lot of it is too political or self-serving (i.e. stuck-up, "ALL mainstream is garbage") for my liking. Nas and Jay-Z are my absolute favorites, along with DMX, T.I., Kidz in the Hall (new favorites), and 50 Cent.

When it comes to rap, I practically study the verses, since I rap on the side, and I apply them to my own writing.

Rock, I can only take so much of, but I'll listen to alternative, new-alt, death metal, post grunge, melodic alt-pop...stuff like that.

ehhhh, those guys have like, two good songs between them. Except the Dream. He's got some awesome songs of his own plus he's written some great ones. Such as J holiday' bed and Rihana's umbrella.

I think Bobby Valentino's two albums (and his one digital EP) are really underrated. And Raheem DeVaughn is more for the neo-soul set than anything else, so I can understand if people don't really like his stuff.

The-Dream is just really, really, vulgar pop. But his stuff is addictive, because he just knows how to take a simplistic instrumental and make it sound better than it really is. His lyrics are mostly corny, and the vocals are almost identical from song-to-song, but it's still catchy.

And I hate how Chris Brown is being developed...they're pushing too hard to make him the next young Michael Jackson, and he's just plain bubblegum pop now. He had a lot of potential on his debut album with a couple of mature songs, but his second album is mostly fluff with no real substance...

I prefer more relaxing, methodical music, I guess. Alternative Rock, per say.

The Killers

Kanye West

Keane

Coldplay

The Bravery

and a few other scattered, unremembered artists

i think its hard for some people to really get a full grasp the full concept of the whole Hip Hop/Rap deal, because for the most part, most people just get hung up on the curse words and dont really listen to the song in its Entirity, Hip Hop is not meant to be "Gang Bangers and Their girls" and stuff, Hip Hop is a unique art form in which anyone can take and twist it to their own style and liking. ultimately bringing a unique perspective to the Musical Community. People just have to look past the Curse words and such and listen to the story behind it.

Some (if not most) of these Artists nowadays just come into the game and start Rapping about Money, Girls, Cars, drugs and whatever else, which is NOT what "Hip Hop" is supposed to be at all. If you take a second to Listen to the Old School Hip Hop like Digital Underground, and Tupac (some of his songs), LL Cool J, Dr Dre....you know...the founders of the Hip Hop Game. oh and Run DMC, Salt-N-Peppa, The Sugarhill Gang, MC Hammer.

if you listen to Those few....just listen to a few of their songs like Digital Under Grounds "Same Song" or "the Humpty Dance" or just anything from those artists that were Big back in the day, im sure, that some of you out there might gain a little more appreciation for what The word "Hip Hop" truly means, and not to get it confused with this Ganster Crap nowadays.

For some of us, it's not a matter of understanding hip-hop.

We just don't like it. I'm fairly open-minded when it comes to music, but I don't see how rap requires a lot of musical talent. I don't relate to the lyrics, either - so it doesn't have much appeal. I'm an old fart (38 going on 39) compared to most of you, so bear that in mind. I have no problem with people who get into it, but I don't.

I like a variety of music, and here are some of my favorite artists (in the order I happen to think of them):

The Police, Iron Maiden, Black Sabbath, Waylon Jennings, Willie Nelson, Gretchen Wilson, Toby Keith, The Who, The Smiths, Suzanne Vega, John Prine, AC/DC, Primus, Rush, Little Big Town, Shooter Jennings, Hank Jr, Frank Sinatra, Billy Joel, The Beatles, Madonna, Prince, No Doubt, KISS, Fleetwood Mac, Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Van Halen.

There are others, but that covers most of my big favorites.

I also like classical, and I dig a lot of Mozart's operas (Don Giovanni and Cosi fan tutte especially).

I don't see how rap requires a lot of musical talent.

From a songwriters' standpoint, it's more difficult than you'd think to put together a verse that's coherent, sonically-pleasing, AND conveys an element of storytelling, combined with a degree of humor or wit meshed with intelligence.

OR...in other words, you'd have to do it (and try to do it WELL), to understand the talent required.

As someone once said, (paraphrased) "everyone can rap; not everyone can rap WELL."

It's harder to stand out as a rapper, since pure singers in other genres are able to stand out on the merits of their voices alone -- rap doesn't have that luxury, for the most part.

And like you said, it's either your thing, or it isn't. Which is perfectly fine.

I just came to appreciate hip-hop after I started rapping; I realized I was horrible, and after hearing a verse that blew my mind (I believe it was a Nas song), I worked at improving.

I can respect that.

The thing about music is that what a particular person likes or doesn't like is totally subjective. I could sit here and explain why a country artist like Gretchen Wilson is so great - or why a metal band like Iron Maiden is so amazing - until I'm blue in the face. But at the end of the day, you either like the music or you don't. You relate to it or you don't - and that's up to the individual. And depending upon your mood or what's going on in your life, you might be more or less receptive to it.

Most music has something about it that's admirable...except maybe Michael Bolton.

Obviously you can tell there is one rock band who's music I'm in ove with (check the sig :) )

There first album (a fever you can't sweat out) was kind of emo but not really. It got compared to Fall out boy's stuff alot, whick I didn't really like, becasue their stuff actually has meaning. Whether the meanings be about composer Ryan Ross's troubled childhood or any of the band members lives growing up with each other, it always had a real message in the song.

Thier new album(Pretty.Odd.) is completely differnt and is drawing comparisons to the beatles and bands like that. Teh songs are slower and sound prettier (that's the best description I could think of  ) but still have all teh meaning in the world. Rya Ross may be the best song writer I have ever seen. Really. And lead vocalist Brendon Urie has the most amazing voice I've ever heard, for certain.

All that being said, my favorite songs of thiers are (in no particular order)

when the day met the night

mad as rabbits

nine in the afternoon

Time to dance

Camisado

Nails for breakfast, Tacks for snacks

Northern Downpuor

She had the world

I know that's a lot of favorites, but they are truly amasing. Don't just take my word for it, check some of their stuff out. ;)

I've been hooked on alt-rock songs from the '90s recently. They make me...reminisce (lol).

Oasis - Wonderwall

Dave Matthews Band - Crash Into Me

Third Eye Blind - How's It Going to Be

The Verve Pipe - The Freshmen

Songs like that.
