"Next Man Up"

15 posts in this topic

I posted in another thread about the book "Next Man Up" by John Feinstein. I don't think everyone is aware of this book that follows the Ravens from inside the draft to the playoffs in 2004. The author had complete access to everything. Even if you remember all the wins and losses it can be suspenseful. Getting a more personal view of players, is interesting, sometimes very moving. No, I don't get anything from profits.

If you are a Ravens fan, and obviously you are if you are on this forum, it is a must read. You'll love it.

It is a good book. I started reading it a while back but never got around to finishing it. But a great read for any Ravens fan, like you said.

Old school! I read this way back in the day, did a book report on it in middle school  It's an awesome book and gives great insight into the workings of our franchise. It details so many great stories, McAlister's contract extension, Bisciotti becoming the majority owner, Billick's management style, etc...

It seems like I'm making a pitch for this book but I genuinely loved it. I might go read it, again, haha.

how does it read?
Meaning is it like a story book or like a documentary or just a bunch of stats and facts?

From what I remember, it reads like one of Bryne's articles - if you've read one. Held my attention without issue.

Yes it did--I loved it. It read better the the Blindside. I need to see if I can get both of those for the Kindle.

It is a mix of documentary and story. Not dry at all.

It's a little bit of everything. I took it more as a documentary-style book with some insights from the author himself, commenting on his time with the team. This was the first time that the team had offered unfettered access to any member of the media, and I don't think many NFL teams have ever offered this level of exposure to their inner workings.

I borrowed it from my neighbor but have never gotten around to finishing it because school and other commitments keep getting in the way. It's a great read, though. It helped shape my broader understanding of the league and the team. There's a bit of talk about how the team grades players, and how contract negotiations are handled. There's also some sections about how much of a leader Ray Lewis is, and how Deion Sanders is much more reserved in the locker room than on camera, etc. Overall, it validates everything we thought we knew about the team and the league, as well as dispelling a few myths.

It's a good book, got passed around my family a few years back. This is the first book I ever read that wasn't assigned to me. Definitely a must read for the ravens fan.
