I wish someone caught that stiffarm Rice put on James Farrior last season. That would have made a great sig gif.

Which game was that?

Matthews was more deserving. Full 16 games, more impressive statistics, more important to his team, and he didn't fold during the playoffs, either. He's got 3.5 sacks so far. Didn't they push back the voting for that reason?

I don't believe that. Spin out, maybe. Over Power? I just don't see it.
Trust me, it happened. Find a way to watch that game in full online or something. Flozell was basically being walked back towards Ben.

Actually, Troy has more tackles. Not sure how you can argue who is more important to his team. The Packers seem to know how to handle player loss due to injury as they have 17 (?) players on IR and are in the SB.

Ben got the ball off; I can't remember what happened after that.

It was last season I cant remember which Pitt game but Rice broke out into the open and put a stiffarm on Farrior, they showed some replays but none of the announcers mentioned it. It was the first time I noticed the neck pad he wears too.

It's not the only play nobody seems to remember, I remember Edgar Jones playing one snap against the Chargers and he absolutely destroyed Merriman head to head.

Because tackles are the most accurate statistic ever? Especially when the margin is 3.

I'm basing the "importance" off surrounding talent. Take Matthews off that squad, they're not a top 5 D anymore. Take Polamalu off the Steelers, they're still a great defense. Check out 2009.

Matthews was the bigger play-maker this season. He started the season strong and he's still going into the post-season.

Are you feeling okay???

14-4 with Troy
5-7 without.

Second, YOU are the one who brought up stats. 14 sacks versus 6 picks and Troy had more tackles. I believe it was you guys who pointed out how more valuable Picks are versus Sacks.

haha. Good point, but actually our ST's only gave up 4 TD's. We also missed FG's and we never lost a single game by more than 7 points.

We missed the playoffs. What do you think happens if Troy plays in all of those games?
Steelers lost Aaron Smith and Ziggy didn't play as well as he has this season which slightly effected the pass rush and it didn't help Ike had a down year getting fried by no name WRs like Louis Murphy(Raiders WR lol) and William Gay didn't play so well on the outside. It was also Timmons first year taking over at ILB next to Farrior who looked a lil slower than he did the previous year. Combine that with a terrible STs and you have the 2009 Steelers. Troy def makes a difference but one man did not cause the 09 Steelers to fail. A combination of all those things I mentioned did which they fixed this season. Ike has played much better, McFadden is better on the outside than Gay while Gay is good at nickleback. Ziggy has taken over Aaron Smiths spot very well too.

I don't know who "you guys" is, but that's true. Matthews had a hand in forcing interceptions, as well. I'm going to go on a stat binge, so everyone hold tight. Matthews, himself, may not have gotten the interceptions but the Packers were the NFL leader in that category. 24 picks off of 527 attempts - a 4.55% interception rate - good for best in the NFL. Packers also led the league in lowest opponent QB rating, top 5 in lowest opposing completion percentage, and second in sacks (Steelers, in first place with 48, had ~70 more drop backs).

Pressure from Matthews was integral and, perhaps, the biggest factor in all of those things. To me, he had the more impressive season and was much more valuable to the Packers.

The problem I have with Polamalu is he played some terrible coverage this year, I suppose you can play poorly as long as you make the game changing play and win the game.

Yep. If you put it on a scale. Game changing plays outweighs bad coverage at times. His handful of plays singly changed outcomes of games. But that's what he does.

Are you sure it wasn't this play in the AFC Championship game in January '09?

Jones smashed Merriman? I would have loved to have seen that.

Matthews is good, but Matthews is no Troy Polamalu. Polamalu makes game changing plays "over and over" again, for YEARS he's done this. If you asked me, Reed should have got Matthews votes. But Defensive Player of the Year is not a scientific result but one based on opinion. Troy's been in the league now around 7 yrs, so I say at least "1" of those he wins DPOY... this just happens to be the one. My opinion its overdue...

2008 is the only other season you could argue he's deserved DPOY honors in my opinion.

An invalid point. I'm not going to criticize you to badly though, you're just sticking up for your guy. He IS a great player, but what he did in previous years should have no bearing on this year's voting. It probably does though, in reality. But I'm not the one voting and that's why they're wrong ;).

This is a complete crock... sure, he's great, but Matthews has been much more impressive (in the playoffs too) and didn't miss any games this season. A little added motivation for this Sunday.

This is true. I hope Matthews comes out with a chip on his shoulder. I doubt he will, but it would be awesome if he did. A little extra motivation can go a long way.

Against the Steeler O-line he could easily be the Super Bowl MVP.

I think there's a fine line between being the most valuable player to your team (MVP) and being the straight up best player. Is Troy more valuabe to the Steelers than Ed is to us and Clay is to the Packers? Yes. HOWEVER, I wouldn't say he's a better safety than Reed.

My honest vote would've been for Clay since he only missed one game I believe? Troy and Ed (especialy Ed) missed more, I think that's a good reason to keep them from winning it. Apparently not good enough for Troy though.

He "should'nt have one. He probably knows it. There were 3 other guys in the league that had more sacks than him. Matthews was not even in the top 50 (yes 50) when it comes to interceptions Or tackles... no. Not even in the top 50 in tackles... So no. He should not have a chip on his shoulder.
So there are arguments that he should not even be on the list. Like Troy said also, "nobody should qualify to win DPOY in such a "team" sport"...

The same argument about Troy could be made about Suggs. Imagine if we didn't have Suggs, how bad our OLB would be and how horrible our pass rush would be. We would get slaughtered without Sizzle.
