Suggs, Ravens Can't Agree

135 posts in this topic

Anyone have a link to this?

And I don't get what him holding out would accomplish. They can't sign him to a new deal until after the season (not saying this is fake, just saying it's silly of Suggs).

Nothing is confirmed yet, he hasnt really made his decision, but Clayton said on ESPN today that the player most likely to hold out is Terrell Suggs.

http://www.baltimoresun.com/sports/footbal...0,5132763.story

that says he was considering it.

Terrell just wants his money. Nothing immature about that. Actually, it's the most mature part of this league; players have worked all their life with little or no compensation to make it to this point, the NFL. They've earned as much as they can get.

He said it on Sports Center. I saw it this morning.

If he holds out into the season, he wouldnt show up until week 10. Thats a pretty big blow. I hope he comes to his senses. He'll get his money, eventually. And its his fault that he has to wait for it.

why wouldn't he show till week 10?

Because thats the deadline that he has to sign the franchise tender by. If he doesnt sign by then, he wont be eligible for free agency. Have you been following the NFL the past 2 seasons? Freeny, Briggs, Samuals, and a bunch of others have all threatened to do it.

Thats the keyword there, Threatened, no one has done it im pretty sure. He will sign the franchise tag by then or will have a contract i promise you that. He wont miss out on 10 weeks of that huge paycheck. No player in the NFL will, its all just common practice in contract negotiations. Happens every single year and every time the player signs by week 1 and is playing.

He will be on the roster week 1 under a big contract or have signed the franchise tag.

Well, can't he not negotiate a new contract until this season's over? If he wants to play (before week 10) he has to sign the franchise tenure.

Yeah, I know threatened is the key word but you have to consider all possibilities. It is a possibility!

Thats right. The deadline for franchise tagged players to sign long term extenstions was earlier this week. Which is why this is even an issue.

Hate to say it, but if Suggs actually sits out the first 9 weeks and decides to report Week 10, I don't want him back. How could he even threaten this with the new regime just getting off the ground!? Not very smart on his part, if you ask me. It just goes to show you he cares more about the $$ than winning and the TEAM.

Business side of it i can completely understand him wanting more money. Wouldn't you? football side of it...sad to see.

I don't care how good you think you are, you shouldn't shun the people that gave you an opportunity nor should you bite the hand that feeds you. I love suggs but come on sizzle what the heck? He comes off a sub par season last year and all of a sudden wants this dwight freeney type of contract??

I know his rookie contract is up but he hasn't had half the career Dwight Freeney has had, stat-wise nor in his ability to impact the game the same way. I love t-sizzle but come on already. I know he is among the best at his position but if you can't make a deal with ozzie by now...and threaten to hurt our team by holding out...Then you are one greedy mo-fo

Ozzie takes care of all of his best players, look at the previous 1st rounders...ogden big bucks, c'mac 10 mil a year, ray highest at his position, reed huge deal, suggs?? he's gonna get paid. Even boller got paid...So why all this holdout bs. Sad to see...and if he holds out, screw him...Tag him next year and let him hold out again...thats 2 seasons with no pay.

First the comment about wanting to play for the cardinals, now this bs...suggs you are starting to piss me off. Your getting benched in madden 09'..

I disagree. I say it is pretty close. First its hard to compare them when they come from two very different style of Defences... Just compare their rushing and passing Ds over the years.

And they have obviously different positions.

Freeney 88 Games, 199 Tackles, 60 Sacks, 31 FF, 10 PD, 0 Interceptions

Suggs 80 Games, 298 Tackles, 45 Sacks, 14 FF, 22 PD, 3 Interceptions

So the difference is that Freeney has 15 sacks and 17 FF, amazing!

But Suggs has other duties like coverage and the difference is 99 T, 12 PD and 3 Interceptions.

Yeah you would probably still prefer Freeney... Funny when he had his best seasons, Colts D was not very good, and last year when Colts D actually was very good and better than ours!.. but Freeneys season?

besides the fact that, its not all about the flash and stats and "Look at me, see the numbers i put up?" type thing, those who play the game like that are not in it for the real deal, only themselves, Suggs has said over and over again that Baltimore is the Place where he wants to be and stay, he wants to stay a Raven, a big part of this stalling is because of his agent, whom also Represents Dwight Freeney so you know for a fact that the agent has alot to do with it, especially after the Deal he Got Freeney a few years ago with the Colts, and right now Suggs has since said that he's now seeking Advice from teammates like Ray Lewis, Ed Reed, and such, about what to do, and where to go from this point forward.

You know for a fact how much Reed, and Lewis put forth the issue of "team" and you know how much they mean to this team and you know how much this team means to them, so you can surely bet that at some point in time, they will say "play it by ear, play it smart, dont be stupid about this" This Ravens Defense needs Suggs out there and He Knows it, Ray knows it, Reed Knows it, so he knows not to go too too long because he knows that the Ravens are counting on him, to be one of the major Contributor's out there on Defense making plays to get the ball back. Yea im sure that the team is always looking for that guy or two, to really step it up a notch and contribute alot more than say..some of the other Rookies out there but for the most part, The team is Relying on its Veteran Type Players in order to be the Difference Makers out there on the field.

Im thinking we wait and see out the year, if he has another sub 5 sack year then we let him go and put the faster Antwan Barnes in his place.

Suggs might not come to training camp period? I gotta say this pisses me off in a bad way. The whole vibe surrounding Owings Mill is the TEAM concept. If you have never played football for an organized team b4 then I know many of you might not understand why this is a big deal. Training camp is where you come together as a team, where you form bonds, and most importantly send the message to your other teammates that we're in this together no matter what.

Those of you who are familiar with 2 a days know Training camp is TOUGH!!! Its brutal, and if a guy doesnt show up and dog out the heat, sweat their A**es off, and put in the same grueling work that everyone else puts in...Boy let me tell you, it just pisses you off! It just doesnt sit well with coaches or other players.

Training camp is where you find out what the guy next to you has, it's something about the intense punishment if you will, that allows the team to know what they got. Pushing themselves to the edge to see their limits. Knowing what they can do and what it will take to overcome what they cant do. It gives the team the confidence it needs to start off the season. And when you have a distraction like this especially from one of the starters and one of the leaders...one of the key pieces to your team....it sends the wrong message. Goes completely against what harb is trying to build. And as small as it may seem to us, in the locker room its never a good thing. In the back of their minds your teammates dont forget that.

Suggs and his agent had from last january till the present to get this worked out. It's bs and as a fan i dont appreciate this ish. I know its business but i have to question his loyalty here. NFL is different from high school and college i know, but the game stays the same.

srry for the lengthy rant.

NFL is very different from college and high school purly because of the monitary aspect of it. Money changes everything. Suggs has good intentions, and he probably wants to be in camp, but if he goes he possibly loses money out of his next contract. Comradery is something that is built, but on a defense where has has played with all of the starters is quite frankly less important. Its going to hurt him this season, no doubt about it if he holds out. However training camp in the NFL is different from a high school training camp. Its more of a mental thing than a physical thing. Its about running plays, reading defenses, knowing alignments where in high school its about running laps and doing oklahoma drills. NFL players now are in shape throughout the offseason. I'll be dissapointed if he doesnt show up, but you have to look at his point of view. He wants to be paid what he should be, and the Ravens arent giving it to him. Thats everybodys point of view, that theyre not paid enough. He wants his long term deal done, and he wants it done now so he doesnt have to worry about it all season long. Whether he can officially sign it or not isnt the point, because they can still negotiate and get it done. This isnt how the Ravens or suggs wanted it to turn out, but thats how its happened and both sides need to do whats best for the ravens and get it done.

Can anyone explain to what Suggs will accomplish from holding out through training camp? We didn't sign him to a long term deal in time so now we have to wait till after the season to pick up on negotiations. So I can't see how Suggs holding out can really help him get a deal. If anything I would think he would want to get into camp, bust his a**, so he can dominate this season and get the money he wants come free agency. Just doesn't make sense to me, any thoughts......

I hope the Ravens fine him the maximum allowed every single day he misses camp... besides, Suggs missing camp really only hurts him and his conditioning. If he wants a big contract he will need to have a better year this year and missing out on all these reps (possibly) is only detrimental to his "cause."

they can't fine him since he isn't under contract. so the only reason I can see him missing camp is to just show his discontent towards the organization for not getting him the contract he wanted. It's so stupid to me. Rather than showing a sign of good faith by showing up on time and pleasing everyone that impacts the contract decisions he just pisses them off more, smart move sizzle.

he can't be fined for not showing to camp if he hasn't signed his franchise tender, which he hasnt done.

Adam Sheftner reported he is going to skip training camp and report on august 28th after our last preseason game. At least hes going to show up before week one, but i would bet Barnes is starting week one with suggs coming in every once in a while.

Trade him, the Cards will give us a (eventually high) 1st rounder for him, do you know the type of talent in next years draft? the best LT since Orlando Pace, the 2 best MLBs in years and the best CB since CHAMP BAILEY.

I say trade him! If he does not want to show up for camp then he is not thinking about the team. I will take 8.whatever Mil. for one year any day. He will probably leave next year any way.
