Ravens On Yahoo's "All-Intangible" Team

I just saw this eye-opening story on Yahoo highlighting players who led the league in a number of metrics compiled by Football Outsiders.

Joe had the 3rd highest completion percentage on passes on third and 8 or longer. That he attempted at least 19 more passes than the next QB says a lot about how poor the Ravens' running game was this season.

Mason was among the lowest in YACs -- not surprising considering all the comebacks and outs he caught.

Suggs tied for 2nd in QB hurries, and was only one hurry behind the leader.

Wow Suggs really turned on the pressure. And this is with no one being a real pass rushing threat outside of maybe Ngata. Imagine if the Ravens add a quality OLB/DE to help Suggs get blockers to stop focusing in on him only. He'd be a sizzling like the sun.

Flacco's completion percentage on third down didn't come as a surprise to me. I thought he did a great job in those situations. And yes, he was in those situations often due to the lack of running game. Before every first down, I would look to the person I was watching the game with, and I would say, "Ray Rice, one yard run." I was right at least half the time. I'm pretty unbearable to watch a game with actually. It's worth noting, though, that I think Joe's completion percentage in those scenarios is padded a bit (though still impressive) by check downs.

Im pretty sure Suggs stats are a bit inflated because we play the steelers twice in the regular season. Lol just kidding....good job guys and gooooo ravens!

Thats not surprising, 3rd and 8 is clearly a check down to Ray Rice right?
If it gets the 1st down and keeps the drive alive, where's the problem with that?

I personally miss Kelley Washington on those downs. He was so clutch in those situations.

That he was in a 3rd and long situation 70 times to Big Ben's 51 times says a lot about the play calling and how he was put in a situation to fail more times than not.

If you check Flacco's overall stats he did not check down as often as people like to think.

I'm pretty sure the lack of a running game and execution had a lot to do with those 3rd and longs. It's easy to say Cam should have been more creative in how the team run or they should have passed more on early downs with the running game being so anemic. That's pretty difficult to do with a third-year QB and an nconsistent line though. Especially when you've been practicing a vertical passing game since OTAs.

Yep. The only difference between a "boring/predictable" play and a "fundamental" play is execution.

I agree. I'm not sold on Sergio.

No one is. Not only do doctors have to clear him first, I doubt anybody really knows how he'd be affected playing football again. Ken Hamlin returning to the field after suffering a fractured skull gives me hope Kindle can as well but we don't know.

That's encouraging stuff. Those plays were critical in keeping our drives sustained. However yes, our running game needs to be fixed. With a good running game, those 3rd and 8's are instead 3rd and 3/4's, making it much more manageable.

I'm sure it did, and so did doing retarded crap like throwing fades to six foot recievers, sending Boldin and Mason on streaks, running draws after taking a sack or penalty on first down, etc.

its really not that hard when that QB is a guy who threw for over 3600 yards and 25 TDs and rarely turns the ball over, DESPITE the boneheaded playcalling and boneheaded OL.

What I dont get is, if we have been practicing a vertical passing attack since day one, why was Stallworth not a part of it?

Can't argue with that your first points.

I actually agree with a point noy made a while back that signing Houshmandzadeh mucked things up. Not that it excuses Stallworth often being forgotten but T.J. making noise earlier in the season when he wasn't playing many snaps, let alone getting catches probably put pressure on the coaches to play him.

I found that article a bit confusing. For example, they have Suggs and Demarcus Ware listed under defensive end. I can see Suggs being listed as an end but no way Ware should be. Does that mean Suggs was the 3rd best defensive end at QB hurries? I can't tell. Its still a great year but if it doesn't include OLB's like Harrison and Wake than it loses a lot of its meaning.

Good stuff and we also ran the ball more than we did last year yet we had to hear "Run the ball more". I hope Flacco gets a lil more credit seeing as how the Ravens won 12 games with no real running game.
