Sophmore Slump?

15 posts in this topic

now ive been meaning to make this topic for a while now and i finally got some free time to make it. Now alot of yall have been bashing on Oher for not looking like our LT of the future but in my mind looking back at the season i think he just had a sophmore slump. and when you think about it we as ravens are not use to seeing that because alot of guys we draft in the first round did not have a sophmore slump. So i just want know if yall think that was the case and would yall feel comfortable of having Oher as our LT next year

I won't be comfortable with Oher at LT until he proves he can consistently hold up against top pass rushers. He has the athleticism but needs to become more of a technician, especially with his relatively short arms.

I think I'm correct in saying that Oher gave 7 sacks up this year. That's the same as he did last year at the less stressful position of RT. That says to me that he made an improvement.

A slump? No. But he did struggle this year, I think he's more suited to being a RT in the NFL.

His arms have been measured at 33.25(at his Pro day) and 33.5 inches(at the Combine).

The same could be said about Webb. Only Kruger improved his 2nd year in the league.

I thought played well at CB. He can be overly agressive but the Ravens have needed that at CB after watching Washington and Foxworth wiff tackles and just look soft on the field.

Oher would be great on the right side. He's a real mauler and has a lot of aggression which makes him perfect for the running game instead of blocking the blindside (no pun). I think next season he would be better suited for RT (and Yanda back at Guard) since he'll go up against the weaker pass rushers and have a chance to really push bodies and open up lanes for the running game.

One thing I heard that interested me was that Oher is so quick on his step back at the snap, that he was falsely pinned with some false starts throughout the season. I'm not being a homer and saying Oher never committed a false start, but the fact that some of his false starts were exactly... well, false starts, is something to think about.

Outside of being too aggressive, Webb did fine to me. He may have messed up on some plays by thinking he was faster than he really is, or trying to go for the INT, but I think with our new DB coach, Austin, Webb will be pulling down more Int's this year. And Webb may have thought he was faster than he really was because of his ACL that probably was still a bit sore, and most likely slowed him down a little, which if he had that speed that he lost due to the ACL, he would've been perfect.

As for Oher, I believe he needs to be on the right side. He presses too hard out on the field when he's lined up with an elite pass rusher, which leads to too many false starts. When he tries to correct the false starts by slowing his reaction time down a little, I think it becomes too uncomfortable to him which leads to a loss of focus, which in turn leads to loss of technique. Either we sign an excellent O-Line coach to teach him how to make up for this fact, or we put him back on the right side
