Five Most Depressed NFL Cities

30 posts in this topic

Earlier today, I caught some info on CNN in regard to a survey of which NFL cities are the most depressed when it comes to their teams. All I could catch of it was the top five, which ranked from five to one as such -

5. San Diego
4. Houston
3. Cincinnati
2. Atlanta
1. Philadelphia

I just had the feeling that Philly would make the list somewhere, and I guess I'm not surprised by where they landed.

If anyone else has seen the whole survey and has the results, please help me out here. I will appreciate it.

Buffalo should be number 1. They made it to the Superbowl so many times, and never won, they still have that taste in their mouths.

At least Philly is competitive every year.

Yeah, Buffalo should be WAY up there. Some fans think we have it rough, how about four straight Super Bowl appearances - no wins? Damn.

They've got to be #1.

San Diego and Jacksonville don't even care about football or like their team. They'll turn and boo Rivers or Garrard the minute they throw an incompletion. Atlanta? What? They have a halfway decent team this year, if that's based solely on the 2007 debacle, fine, but #2??

And Cleveland #8? Child, please. That's all I have to say to that list.

Yep. Even when San Diego is winning, they fear blackouts.

Not a fan of this list at all. I'm guessing its from a Philly fan. Woe is me!

Five playoff or recently playoff caliber teams cities are ahead of Detroit? Their 0-16 season from a couple years ago combined with the fact they haven't had a winning season in a decade would lead me to believe they would be the most frustrated. Cities like Philly and San Diego will never fully appreciate winning teams I guess.

While they used cities that had been to the Super Bowl at least once if I read the rest of the criteria correctly I'm not sure this is really based on football.

No Doubt. Lions should be much higher. No Superbowl appearances. While all the other clubs with long histories have something the Lions have zero. Plus their city is economically bankrupt. 0-16 system.

1. Detroit
2. Buffalo

Philly and Atlanta would be way down the list.

Having a roommate from Philly, I don't know why Philadelphia is the most depressed NFL City. It is probably the most angry one. I swear he wants to break everything in the house after Andy Reid calls a bomb to Desean Jackson on 3rd and 1...

I can understand some of the logic behind this list. ;)

The Eagles have been a bridesmaid but never a bride. They've had a .516 winning pct., have been to the playoffs 19 times since 1970, been to only 2 SuperBowls, and have never won. The Flyers have lost in the Stanley Cup finals their last 6 tries, and haven't won since '75. The Phillies won the Series in '08, but hadn't won since 1980 before that; the same for the 76ers, with 15 playoff series and no championships since 1983...

In Atlanta, the Falcons have been competitive lately, but they are 77 games below .500 since 1970, and have lost in their only SuperBowl bid. The Braves went to the playoffs 14 out of 15 seasons between 1991 and 2005, and won only one World Series. Since the Hawks have been in Atlanta, they've made the playoffs 24 times with no World Championships.

Cincinnati I also understand. Since 1978, they've had 6 seasons over .500 and 27 seasons .500 or worse. In those 33 seasons, only 3 times has their Defense been ranked in the top half of the NFL. Like Atlanta, they are 77 games below .500 since 1970, and have lost their only two SB appearances. Their only other pro franchise, the Reds, have won one World Series in the last 34 years.

Ravens fans need to remember that 15 cities have never won a SuperBowl. Six have never appeared in one. And the Ravens have the 10th highest franchise winning pct. in the NFL, since 1970.

Hey now, we had dollar days back in the 60's and 70's....couple of my relatives scooped up some rentals back then; few still have them now actually.

I think the reason why San Diego and Philadelphia are higher up than cities like Cleveland is because they're always so competitive and get a lot of hype but always fail to make it to the superbowl or win the superbowl.

Cleveland on the other hand is rarely competitive so it's kind of the norm.

a lot of buffalo fans are really loyal up here actually. They are more happy than sad i think. But yes its a shame the bills did not win any superbowl.

Really? That's surprising. That's what real fandom is about, though, appreciating and celebrating the team, even when they're not doing so well. It's a lot better than not having a team to root for.

Amazing statistics. A+

I've been around Philly fans for a good 10 years and they are one of the most ungrateful bunches around. People still complain about McNabb, and he's not even here!

While it may be true that Philadelphia fans are ungrateful, those same fans are also some of the most critical fans in the league. Of course, there are critical fans elsewhere, but not like Philadelphia.

As for San Diego and Jacksonville, I wouldn't want to see those cities lose their teams.

That city should not even have a sports team. Worst fans on earth. I think their team gets booed more at home then they do on the road....

Agreed, LA should try to get the Eagles from Philly. I can understand Philly being the most depressed because they aren't ever happy unless the Eagles win the Super Bowl, that city truly defines the term "Super Bowl or Bust."

Here's my Top 5 list:

- Buffalo

- Detroit

- Cleveland

- Washington(AKA Landover, MD)

- Chicago(They rip Jay Cutler and Burn his jersey, that's enough to make this list)

For future consideration add Boston. I don't follow baseball so know nothing about Sox ... or the Bruins on the hockey side. Celtics? Eh .. if pro basketball is your thing .. not much of a sport to me. Brady's getting beat up worse every year and I think Gisselle is gonna pull the plug on his career (and his bald spot) at some point soon. I just see more one and dones for the Patriots, and no-shows when Brady retires.

Well it'll be interesting to see them next year since they have good young players. Some already have raised expectations for them next year.

Jacksonville and SD have sun all year round, basically, so why would they be depressed?
Anyone that is from Cleveland and still lives there has depression all year round, basically, so they are used to it and perhaps know how to deal with it better.
I respect Browns fans, not just because one of my good friends is a Browns fan from Cleveland, but because they have a lot of heart.

One of the most depressing examples, in my opinion, is last season in baseball, the Rays had to give away free tickets in order to get the fans there, and they had a great team...
It has been quite depressing here in Bmore for baseball. But, it looks like things are turning around. Even though I have no idea who all these new O's are...

I can seem to understand some of those which are snakebit, i.e., Browns, Lions and Bills, as this can be a reflection of fortunes over the past thirty years in their cities.

As for the Vikings, I will admit that there may be some uncertainty, particularly in regard to the stadium situation. Yet that shouldn't cause all that depression in the Land of 10,000 Lakes.

The Jets and Chiefs have so much to hold up, as those two sides won Super Bowls while still members of the AFL. How much longer this can go on remains to be seen.

Finally, in regard to the Eagles, their attitude is - from what I've read here - "Super Bowl or Bust", however we should remember that back in the early eighties there was some talk of the Eagles being lured by Phoenix to play there. Had then-Eagles owner Leonard Tose accepted the offer, might there have been significantly more depression?

I welcome your comments.
