Baseball Could Have First $300 Million Player

25 posts in this topic

I came across this earlier this morning, that this guy wants a 10 year, $300 million contract. Are you kidding me? I don't remember any player in any sport asking for this much money.

baseball and its refusal to goto an imposed salary cap is why you have these ridiculous contracts, and why teams like the Yankees and Phillies will goto the playoffs every year and have a shot to win the world series.

I don't know if any player is worth $30 million a year in any sport. Not even the greats from back in the day. Wow.

That's exactly why teams like the Orioles have no chance of winning. They raise their own prospects through the system, while the Yankees and Phillies buy their way into the World Series almost annually. It was nice to see two teams like the Rangers and Giants make it this year.

I agree, no player is worth anything near $30 million a year. You better be setting record after record in each year of that contract if you're getting $30 million. Like you said, the greatest players to ever play didn't get anything close to what even decent players get today. I believe they earned thousands, not millions, back in the day.

$300 million? Wow. Even David Beckham wasn't that self-centered to demand that much.

Pujols gets a ton of money from commercials, too. Oh well, if someone wants to pay for it, let them.

I think the story states that $30 mil a year was a discount from Pujols side. What a nice guy, he's offering a hometown discount.

That's ridiculous, but he's pretty close to being worth that much... he just turned 31 and I don't see any team paying a guy $30M after he turns 38 or 39, let alone 40 and 41.

Just seems like he's not much of a team player, I mean the Cards aren't exactly a high market team, who knows what kind of players they will be able to retain/get around him in those years. That's just too much money for one player if you aren't the Yankees, Red Sox or Phillies, who seem to have a never ending pocket and can still get good players to fill in. Good luck winning another title.

They've already shelled out bajillions on Matt Holliday and will have to pay Adam Wainwright huge money in a couple of years too... 10 years, $250M seems more than fair.

Lol. Some guys want to win championships. Other guys want $300 million. What's he going to do with all that money anyway?

Maybe Albert is satisfied with 1 World Series ring? If I were him, I'd do what Ichiro did and defer a lot of the money until after I retired, etc., keeping the annual salaries lower and allowing the team to spend on other areas.

I've always liked Ichiro. He's always been one of the "about the team" guys. I never knew abou him defering money for the benefit of the team like that though, nice find.

The money that flies around in baseball and in player contracts is absolutely ridiculous. Take a look at Joey Votto, has his first great year and gets rewarded with a 36 million 3 year contract.

His 1 good year made him higher paid than anyone in the NHL.

Yeah, the economics of baseball are way out of whack... but their annual revenues justify it in most instances.

Guys like Ovechkin, were MLB economics at play, would be those $20-25M per year guys, but that's not gonna happen in the NHL, so they get as much as possible within the financial constraints of the league.

haha ya thats sports tho, u get paid based on passed accomplishments, especially when u r in your twilight years, u might do it again so u get paid as if u already have.

ive always wondered how it would work if u got paid per hr/rbi/rebound/goal/TD etc. but guys have different abilities, im sure it could b worked out, that way no players integrity could b questioned cuz if he didnt try he wouldnt get paid

First he's 31 so I'm not sure who would give him that much money at his age and second I'm sure they are cheaper options through trade that could get teams a first baseman.

I don't even think the Yankees would even pay Albert $300 Million over 10 Years.

The NHL tried that with Ilya Kovalchuk. Rejected.
