Report: Carson Palmer Wants Out of Cincinnati

80 posts in this topic

Per Chris Mortensen of ESPN and a Pro Football Talk article citing Mort, Bengals QB Carson Palmer wants out of Cincinnati. (LINK)

Honestly, I'm surprised he didn't try to leave sooner. While the team found success in 2009, we saw that it was all a fluke as a result of several serendipitous victories throughout that year. Their luck ran out and the team went on a 10-game losing streak after starting 2010 with a 2-1 record, finishing 4-12 on the season. All of this happened despite upgrading from the previous year at several key additions, most notably at WR with a resurgent Terrell Owens.

You beat me to it, I was just about to post this. This very well could be a interesting off-season. Kyle Orton, McNabb and now Palmer could all be available to teams who need a QB... talking to you Arizona & San Fran. This definitely changes things for the Bengals draft wise, because if they trade Palmer they will no doubt be looking to draft a Franchise QB. Which teams do you think will go after Palmer?

The Seahawks would definitely be interested if Pete Carroll wants to bring in his former USC QB as a stopgap solution IF the Matt Hasselbeck era is done, or Palmer could conceivably compete with Hasselbeck for the starting job. Carroll is unlikely to pursue a QB if he doesn't find one he likes, and I sense that Seattle will look to acquire more draft picks by trading down since their rebuilding job isn't over.

If Seattle picks up a veteran QB, like Palmer, what was the point trading for and signing Whitehurst to a two-year $8 mil contract? I think he'll get the reigns this season.

Palmer is 31 years old and still has 4 years for $50 million left on his contract. He was the 19th ranked QB in passer rating and threw 20 interceptions, despite only being sacked 26 times.

I don't expect his phone to be ringing off the hook. Palmer may be lucky for someone to pick up that salary, given his lack of production this past year.

He act like his team was holding him back and like he's in his prime. He was one of the main reasons their season failed.

Vince Young in Cincy?

I really don't respect Palmer as a 'good' player. If I were Marvin Lewis and I knew that he was going to be making a boatload of money next year, I'd get rid of him in an instant, any way possible. All this elite talk drives me nuts, and I'd certainly call him a bust for a number one overall pick.

That would be a lose-lose situation. VY would get killed in this division and the Bengals need a QB they can truly rely on for the future.

I'm going to add more to this Palmer situation. According to NFL.com Palmer wants a trade.... or he'll RETIRE!

http://www.nfl.com/news/story/09000d5d81ddcfc5/article/report-palmer-might-retire-if-bengals-dont-grant-trade-request?module=HP_headlines
The longtime Bengals quarterback will request a trade from the team, and he's prepared to retireif it isn't granted, ESPN reported Sunday, citing several sources.

Palmer, the No. 1 overall draft pick by the Bengals in 2003, is under contract through 2014 as part of a $97 million extension he signed at the end of the 2005 season.

I'm sure there are some teams that'll contact the Bengals about Palmer. Arizona I could see making a major play. The guy can still play ball at times.

I'd call his bluff. No real loss to the Bengals.

I'd be happy. I've always respected Palmer. But wouldn't mind him leaving the AFC North. Who knows how many years it will take the Bengals to find their next competent QB. They could always bring back Kitna. I'm for that idea.

Wow Palmer almost had a 100 million dollar contract, that is absolutely nuts. I'm sure he doesn't care where he ends up because he knows hes swimming in cash at the end of the day.

Nothing lost but nothing gained either. What's the point in letting him retire with the possibility of acquiring a mid to late round draft pick? It sucks for the Bengals because the other team will have the leverage (if what Palmer says is true about retiring), but they might as well get something out of it.

You know what would be funny, if the Bengals trade him to the Browns.

Sorry Carson, you're moving down the street to an even worse team.

I'd be fine if Carson moved on from the Bengals, Carson has a ridiculous record against us and has always been a thorn in our side. Plus the Bengals going to a young QB at the same time would (usually set them back until the kid develops), then knowing the Bengals they'll low ball the kid they drafted and he'll hold out and miss half of training camp and be even more screwed for the regular season lol. Then hopefully we have them in wk 2 with game film on him lol.

I think Minnesota might make the push for him, although it'll probably be a battle between them and Arizona. If he lands in Minny, he'll have some very, very nice targets to hit.

I agree, he won't give up on $40mil, and if he does, he's an idiot.

Well I guess Mike Brown is testing Palmer's retirement threat. He has come out and said that Bengals will not trade Palmer.

http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2011/01/24/mike-brown-says-bengals-wont-trade-carson-palmer/
“We are not trading Carson,” Brown said, in a quote posted by the team on Twitter.
I guess we'll see if Palmer will truly retire.

I'll be happy if Palmer retires. Not that he's been any good for a while but he knows how to pick apart Ravens defenses.

Money has relative value to the individual. And you can't call him an idiot because you can't place the price on emotional stability. Being around the Bengals ownership for this long must have hit him hard, so I'm sure finances are the last thing on his mind (especially when he's earned more than most people do in two or three lifetimes).

I think Mike Brown has some incriminating pictures of Marvin Lewis. Why else would he want to come back to such a horribly run organization?

That's fine with me... Palmer's been a Raven-killer over the years, just like Ben.

San Francisco and Minnesota make a lot of sense.

All my friends that are Bengals fans are terribly upset. They'd rather go in transition year with a young quarterback than keep Carson, who was also a reason they struggled.

Looks like they don't have a choice anyway if Carson does retire.

ESPN mobile alert (received earlier today): Brown has denied Palmer a trade.

Let's see if he backs up his threat to retire or not.

My Bengalsfan friend wants Palmer gone.

Ten bucks says Palmer doesn't back up his threats and will be back under center next season.

If I were Brown, I would have been jumping in joy and immediately on the phone as soon as Palmer demanded a trade. There's the possibility that the Bengals offense will look very different next year. Possibly no Chad and no Palmer. Even though Simpson and Caldwell showed they can play, who knows who may be under center next year. Hope Bengal fans enjoyed that AFCN title last year.

I'm not sure what will happen but the best thing possible is that Palmer stays in Cincy, Bengals draft a QB in the draft, and trade him next off-season, which happened to Boomer Esiason, he asked Mike for a trade, he denied it, drafted his replacement and traded him a year later.
