Thoughts For Pagano As Dc

21 posts in this topic

I know he is an amazing DB coach. I hope he can get our D to the great look it had in 06 or even 00. However, I believe Pagano is a 3-4 man. I wonder how this is going to affect our D? I know our personnel was better suited for 3-4 before Matty came and changed us to 4-3

Pagano has been great with the secondary considering what hes had to work with. I have no problem with him as the new DC, because we would have most likely lost him if we didn't promote him.

Now if someone from college could offer Cam a job.....

Since he sucked as the Indiana HC, and Michigan ain't going to hire him. His ties to the college game is very slim.

Guys... we don't have anywhere near the talent to be like the 2006 defense. No matter who the coordinator ended up being, even if Rex Ryan himself came back... this defense wouldn't be like that defense. Even the Jets right now don't have the talent across the board like that 2006 Ravens defense did.

Depending on what happens, if Ray and Ed are staying... I don't see much changing in the defense. Perhaps we'll play more aggressively rushing the passer when the game is on the line and not play safe. But I don't see much changing defensively... and that's not a bad thing!

If not college, then high school? Community college, even? How about middle school or little league?

As for Pagano, I like him. He seems spunky. I like that in a coordinator. I think he'll bring a lot of aggression to the defense. Hopefully there is some youth sprinkled in there to balance it and take advantage of it. Allen Bailey, maybe?

Players seem to like him allot, I think he is capable of maintaining this defense at or around the top of the league. I am interested to see what wrinkles he puts into this defense, will he bring more blitzes?

I think chuck has been with us and knows our vets enough to know what to run with. He is not going to change everything but improve upon what we already got. Let's hope Kindle comes back strong and we have a solid draft.

There is no way they would allow Cam to coach youth football. 8 years into the future, a number of highly regarded WRs see a dramatic fall in their draft values for failing to run the passing tree. "What is slants? I hab no idear."

Hopefully Pagano will bring to the table a better understanding of how difficult it is for DBs to maintain coverage when there is no pressure on the QB. I think that we'll see less of the three man rush. Although he may not have as many blitz packages ready as some other DCs we've had, we should at least see him giving a decent attempt at pressuring the QB.

The chances of Nnamdi Asomugha becoming a Raven are zero, no matter who is coaching. There isn't enough money. Whoever gets him will be the team that can offer a top-dollar contract and a chance to win a championship. The guy is the best CB in the NFL, and he knows it. He won't settle for a penny less than he's worth, and the Ravens can't afford to give him that much with Ngata, Wilson, Carr, Cundiff, Koch, and a slew of other FAs to resign.

Knows when to use a given play... Check

We have the players to use said play... Check

Understands situations... Check

You could be our new OC, Jamal ;);)

Sarah Ellison reports that he's gonna be more blitz happy...

I like it. I like it a lot.

And the most important part: the players love him.

You know, you forget sometimes that these position coaches have their own playbooks.

I think it's a win-win situation. From the Late From Work article, Ed Reed thinks very highly of Pagano. This could be instrumental in Reed's return next year.

"Pagano also has a long history with safety Ed Reed that extends back to Reed’s high school days. Pagano was the secondary coach at the University of Miami in 1996 and traveled to Destrehan High School in an attempt to recruit Reed.

As we know, Pagano was successful in luring Reed to Miami. Under his direction, Reed became an All-American while the two developed a close bond.

“Coach Pagano is like a father figure to me,” Reed said in early November. “A lot of my success has been because of the mentality he brought to me. … Coach has watched me evolve from a 17-year-old kid to a 32-year-old man. Even to this day, I look up to him. He has always helped me find a way.”

I didn't know they had that long of a history. Thanks for pulling that from the 'Late to Work' article. From the sounds of it, it seems Pagano is a player's coach. All these players spewing positive things about him.

You can't say the same for his opposition.

Wow, I didn't know that. That story seals it for me. A man that can recognize that kind of talent in a 17 yo kid, and that kid ends up being our Ed Reed, and Reed says he owes much about his mentality about the game to Pagano? I'm now officially on-board!

Well first off, I know if the Ravens defense doesn't play up to par next season for the first few weeks it's because of the players adjusting to the new schemes. I remember in Mattisons first tenure it took until around week 6-7 for the defense to be top notch. I won't make any judgments until the season is over.

Also, I think Mattison didn't really get as much credit as he deserved for his work. He had the Ravens in top 10 in nearly all statistical categories and 3rd in points allowed in back to back seasons. The defense wasn't as great as past years, but let's be honest, the personnel is no where close talent and age wise. I think thats why some fans were uncharacteristically harsh on Mattison because they kept comparing him to Rex Ryans defense of '06 (excluding injury raddled '07) and '08 when the Ravens defense was easily the best in the whole league. It was still fresh in their minds but you have to remember the defense wasn't getting boosted with talent like the offense was these past few seasons. He wasn't a great defense coach, but a very good one, especially considering most of his work was in the college level.

I'm excited for next season defensively. I believe in this draft the Ravens should look to inject more youth and talent back into the defense and start breeding young play makers again. Having Pagano works well since he knows the secondary and what the talents of his CBs are best suited for, whether they play better in man coverage or in zone and thus will utilize his blitzing scheme towards that. In an era of passing you need an expert who knows how to stop it, so I give a vote of confident to Pagano.
