Ravens Report Card

17 posts in this topic

GM------------------- A (He fixed all our holes heading into the season)
Head Coach --------- B (Flacco not allowed to audible/look at sideline pics)
Offensive Co.-------- C-(22nd overall ranking with all those weapons)
Defensive Co.-------- A (Good job with our 2ndary from last year)
Special Teams-------- B+(blotched fake punt inconsistent returners )
Quarter Back--------- B (Needs to demand more say so...and study after baddrives
Running Backs------- B (Were victims of bad run play selection)
Receivers------------ B (Outside of the playoff drops not bad at all when targeted
Offensive Line------- C (They need to take protecting flacco personal..false starts
Defensive Line------- A+(Great job men not bad at all)
Linebackers---------- A (Needs more Sacs..Great intensity Always come to play)
Defensive Backs------ B (Survived a lot of injuries for the most part good job)
Kicker--------------- A (It was nice not to be nervous when FGs came up in 2010)
Punter--------------- A+ (Awesome job all season)
2010 Rookie Class---- N/A( Reeds return cody's FF...I don't recall anything else)

The Ravens main problem still seems to be their offensive production...I love seeing other teams QB's go to the line, point out hazards, and make adjustments right then and there....Its nice to see the QB having a mini play book on his non-throwing arm looking at pictures (off field between drives) making sure they cover all angles........maybe the O should consider having an offensive huddle/meeting off the field after every drive...they probably do it in practice....why not give it a try in game situations....that would seem to create more offensive chemistry and get more real time info. exchanged amongst coaching/O-line/QB/Backs/WO.....
Flacco really needs to demand more responsibility he seems like a smart thinker it should be obvious he deserves a bigger piece of input on that ravens offensive pie chart....however thats only going to come if he changed his psyche to be more vocally overt and not be so emotionally mysterious in such an emotional smash mouth I'm coming at you kind of game and business(Jay Cutler got what he wanted *trade*)...
The ravens O needs to change their way of thinking...if that comes by way of a new co-ordinator, or by the same co-ordinator changing his mental cognitive approach(formula...retire own ego+give a young giving up a false sense of controlIts small things that will put the Ravens over the top we're heading straight north, but are off by about 22 degrees....

My Grades:

Baltimore Ravens football in the first half of a game: A
Baltimore Ravens football in the second half of a game: D

This team needs to learn how to play for 60 minutes or they will never see a Lombardi or even a division title....

Offensive plays, schemes, and lack of player usage cost us a shot at another SB. Lack of an attacking mentality on Offense, cost us another shot.
We are all dying here at the thought of another dreadful offensive season. It was bad enough under Billick, now with all these weapons, its just sickening. I hope the door hits him on the buttox on his way out.

Offense

QB: B
Flacco showed a lot of improvement this year, but hasn't yet taken the next step. I believe he will continue to improve and reach elite status. Vision and making reads needs to improve, but he has all the tools to be great.
RBs: C+
Showed flashes of excellence, but were not able to consistently get it done. This team often struggled to convert on short downs (3 &1/2).
WR/TEs: B-
Generally played well but struggled to get separation at times (perhaps due to routes). Boldin showed his strength (when he was given the ball, and Housh and Mason showed sure hands. Heap had a great year, and Dickson played well in backup.
OL: C
Inconsistent play, came unglued towards the end of the season (began giving up many sacks). Oher is not the answer at LT and should be switched back to the right side.
Offensive Coordinator: C-
Cam Cameron did not properly utilize our offensive weapons, was inconsistent in play calling, failed to make proper adjustments, and played conservatively with a lead. That said we were able to garner 12 wins.
Overall Grade: C+
The offense struggled to move the ball all season, OL play was inconsistent in opening up holes and protecting against sacks, WRs were not used to their full extent. They managed to put up enough points to win games, but made it scary and frustrating along the way.
Defense

Defensive Line: B
Turned it up at the end of the season. Suggs had a monster year, Ngata was solid as usual, and Redding picked his game up later in the year. There was a decline in play from Gregg and some other backups. Cody shows promise.
Linebackers: A
Did their jobs and weren't exploited. Jarret Johnson continued to be a strong tackler and run stuffer. Ray has slowed, but is still a top 5 MLB.
Secondary: A-
Reed lead the league in picks despite missing 6 games, Landry was solid and improved. Josh Wilson was a pleasant surprise in the secondary, as was the improved play of both Carr and Webb. On the whole, the secondary gave up too many big plays.
Defensive Coordinator: B
Mattison improved throughout the season and generally called good plays. His refusal to ditch the 3-man rush proved costly in many situations and this defense was suspect against a no-huddle (as always). Prevent defenses prevent you from winning.
Overall Grade: A-
The defense played well enough to win every game, put was put in tough spots by the offense's inability to sustain drives or by their costly turnovers on more than a few occasions. When rested, this defense was more than serviceable.
Special Teams

Kicking: A+
Cundiff had a great year, kicking and on kick offs.
Punting: A+
Koch is the best punter in the league. Able to control the spin of the ball extremely well.
Coverage: A
Not many big returns against the return team this year. Not that hard when Cundiff is consistently reaching the endzone on kickoffs.
Return Game: B
David Reed showed promise, and Ladarious Webb is dangerous with the ball in his hands.
Return Blocking: C+
Not many long returns this year, and a costly hold in the AFC Divisional Round.
Overall Grade: A-
Specialists were spectacular this season, return team rarely busted long gainers but did provide good-to-decent field position consistently.

Head Coach:
Grade: B
Coach Harbaugh provided more guidance for the team, and again improved team discipline and composure. Penalties were greatly decreased this year. However, Harbaugh perhaps did not inject himself often enough when the coordinators were making poor decisions. Also made some suspect challenges.
Overall Grade: B

They were able to win 12 games, but for the most part in an unimpressive fashion. They were the only team to hold a 4th quarter lead in every game, but an inability to close out cost them several times. Consistently failed to play a complete 60 minutes, which cost them in the end. The offense regressed despite adding many weapons. Defense was surging into championship form but received no help offensively.

TL:DR:
Offensse: C+
QB: B
RBs: C+
WRs/TEs: B-
OL: C

Defense: A-
DL: B
LBs: A
Secondary: A-

Special Teams: A-
Kicker: A+
Punter: A+
Returns: B
Kick/Punt Coverage: A
Kick/Punt Blocking: C+

Offensive Coordinator: C-
Defensive Coordinator: B
Head Coach: B

Overall: B

Head Coach --------- C (Time management, doghouse, needs to take the reigns more)
Offensive Co.-------- D+(Under utlized players strengths, poor play calling, etc)
Defensive Co.-------- C+(Secondary work was more CP, Solid coaching effort though)
Special Teams-------- C (Not accounting kicks, just returns.)
Quarter Back--------- C+(Still work on some decision making processes and reads)
Running Backs------- C+(Hindered by O-Line, but still needed to make more plays)
Receivers------------ C (Too much talent, not enough output, guys disappeared at times)
Offensive Line------- D (Under talented and it showed)
Defensive Line------- B-(Suggs and Ngata made it what it is. Gregg is old,Redding was quiet
Linebackers---------- C-(Horrible in Coverage, no pressure, bad taclking)
Defensive Backs------ C (Average, they played great as a unit, still had a lot of lapses)
Kicker--------------- A+ (Touchbacks and consistency)
Punter--------------- A+ (Great inside the 20, catching bad snaps)
2010 Rookie Class---- D-( Not much output, Reed contributed on special teams)

As you can see I dropped the grades you had. The only two people that deserved A's in my eyes is my vote for co-MVPs, Koch and Cundiff.

These seem more in line with the season though I'm not sure the QB deserves a C when it's clear some of the issues he had this season were due to the D grade of the O line and the D grade of the OC. I'd give the QB, all things being considered a B-.

I gave him a C due to too many missed reads, running out of bounds numerous times instead of throwing it away (which is just pure stupidity and shouldn't happen in a QB's 3rd year with his amount of experience), and just an overall lack of the "it" factor.

I feel like people give the LB crew too much credit just becaus of Ray Lewis's name. They were terrible in pass coverage, Tackling was very poor and couldn't get much pressure (outside of Suggs). I can't see meriting them an A.

Secondary was great, but by no means were they an A. They played great with the adversity they had but they still had a lot of strong lapses which aided in us losing games. Pittsburgh Playoffs and Atlanta to name a few.

That running out of bounds instead of throwing it away drives me nuts too but I do think that sometimes this happens because he is put in a position where he feels he absolutely HAS to make every play no matter what because of the play calling of the OC. I think some of the INTs can be attributed to this as well when he tries forcing the ball into clearly tight coverage. Since Cam has proven his lack of skills in the play calling department, for now I am willing to give Flacco the benefit of the doubt in this area.

On the reads I am giving him the benefit of the doubt because the O line played so poorly. On many occasions the time just wasn't there to go through his reads.

An A may be too high for the linebackers, but I just did not see them at fault too often. They were excellent against the run, and definitely servicable against the pass. Ray Lewis defended well in my opinion. However, I will concede arm tackling was a problem at times. I could consider dropping the linebackers a letter.

I gave the secondary an A- because they well exceeded expectations. Their only weakness was giving up the long ball a tad too often. I wouldn't go lower than B+ for the secondary to be honest.

The defensive grades may seem a bit high, but this was one of the top scoring defenses in the league. I take that into account more than I do yardage.

QB - B+, i thought flacco showed that he wants the ball and is not afraid, escpecially later in the year and playoffs, plus to put up the qb rating and numbers he did with that oline(40 sacks, 2nd to last in the leauge) and having a leesh around his neck by his OC, pretty solid
RB - C,really an up and down year, drop from last year, turnovers were a plus tho
WR - B season, C- playoffs, noticed heap more in playoffs, plus huge drops v steelers
OL - D, 2nd most sacks allowed reg season, most playoffs, nuff said
TE - B heap, F everyone else really
DL - B- only generated 27 sacks all year, but sacks dont tell the whole story, not alot of pressure either
LB - B+solid play from the vets, outstanding play by suggs, young guys need alot of work
DB - C+, just way to inconsistent all year
K-A
P-A
KR/PR-C, guess reed would get a c+-b as far as averages go

Head Coach
B,attitude and leadership
B, smarts
A.player relations

O-Coordinator -D, terrible use of talent, sickening really
D-Coordinator -B

the one thing the team did very well this year on a whole is turnovers, big improvement from the previous year

A-exceptional
B-good
C-satisfactory/needs improvement
D-IS THIS F***IN COLLEGE
