[Blogs] Bulger Would Return As Backup

53 posts in this topic

Ravens backup quarterback Marc Bulger didn’t see a single snap this season.

But the former seven-year St. Louis Rams starter would consider being Joe Flacco’s insurance policy once again.

“At this point in my career, I think it is more about winning than anything else,” Bulger said. “That’s pretty much why I came here. I wanted to get a Super Bowl [victory] and we came awfully close. It seems like the perfect organization for myself.

“I was happy here and I wouldn’t mind coming back here.”

Bulger endured a 5-32 record in St. Louis during his final three seasons and was cut by the team late in the offseason. By that time, most other teams had already found their starting quarterback for 2010.

On June 23, Bulger signed a one-year deal in Baltimore worth a reported $3.8 million.

The 33-year-old veteran said he will consider other jobs and potentially being an unrestricted free agent from the get-go could help him find a starting gig.

The Arizona Cardinals and Carolina Panthers have already been rumored as places where Bulger could land as a starter.

“I think everything gets moved up a lot this offseason just because last year I was under contract,” Bulger said, referring to the free agency process. “I think it will be for the better. I can make a decision quicker.”

Bulger said he and Flacco became friends this season after they spent a great amount of time together. The two soft-spoken quarterbacks didn’t leave the training facility before saying they would text each other to get in touch this offseason.

Asked if there can be satisfaction in winning despite not seeing the field, Bulger said, “Sure.”

“Winning anytime is satisfying in this league,” he said. “Being a Raven you understand that walking in this locker room it’s more about the team than any individual. You learn that the first day you’re here, and that’s why I can completely accept my role here.”

First I was calling to bench Flacco in the Bengals game not for the season but it can't hurt for a young qb to sit and learn sometimes. Also, I feel the competition would make or break Flacco. Either get him to step up his play or see what you need to do to control the offense. Do you see how we break hurdles compared to other teams? You're suppose to be able to tell who the leaders are and people leave the huddle looking disinterested and lacking faith either in the play called or person running the play. If Fabian can get benched like any other underperformed player why not Flacco? As a head coach you need to able to make the best decision for your team not a players feelings.

I still believe Bulger is a better QB then Flacco, which says alot about Bulger! Flacco just has the youth and talent to far exceed him. Just hasnt happened! I hope it does. I also believe that Bulger will never get a snap as long as Cam is our cordinator. Cam cant control the veteran like he can young Flacco.

Bulger def seen enough blitzes to know what to audible to and Cam wouldnt like that.

Bulger would be a fool to leave now, they might put him in for pit games since flacco get a case of yellow tail when he sees big ben. We need a vet out there some games because flacco is good but still green, we had poor off yardage against a limping steelers team on their last leg and off linemen and still could not win. I think if flacco screws it up again like that, it will be marcs time to shine.

I sincerely hope Marc does come back. I honestly believe, though I hope I am wrong, that he will be needed. This team was two steps away from a superbowl and a couple of steps away from a 9-7 record (look at the first Steelers' game, the Houston game and the Jets game) and out of the playoffs. The defense has been very good but there are signs of weakening so the offense needs to pick up the slack. Since our current offensive roster and the current offensive scheme does not match and stubbornness seems to be pervasive in the organization, I can see some early losses and some pressure to play Bulger. Of course off season moves could change that picture. I believe Oher will get better on the left side, so I agree with the coaches on that. The right side of the O-line is a problem and it needs to be addressed. The protection calls have not been great so there needs to be some design changes and we all know about the play calling but, although I have not seen it, the playbook does not appear to be very imaginable or its use has not been very imaginable. Hopefully that will change.

So Marc, I really believe you will be needed and I, for one, believe (with the proper support cast) you can takke this team to the Super Bowl.

Mike Preston suggests open tryouts for QB next year. I would have loved to see Bulger take some snaps this year with this offense to see what he could do, and maybe teach Joe some things.
Joe's stock has dropped with me. He is no elite QB. Ben R. is.

Joe has potential to become very good, but not with Cam C. and Zorn breathing down his neck.

Get rid of Cameron, and make Joe earn the starting QB role next year.

Open competition? LOL. I guess Flacco should have won 3 superbowls already.

I know. Crazy isn't it? This kid comes in here from a small no name school, is supposed to sit for a year and learn but circumstances make him the starter, with pretty much Mason making up his WR corps, takes us into the playoffs, does it again the next year, and again the next year (though he has better WRs), improves every season statistically, matches 3rd year stats with the likes of Manning and Brady, breaks franchise records, matches or breaks some NFL records, comes close to being the best road playoff QB ever (5-2 would have done that) and people think he should now have to compete for his job. Boggles the mind.

In Marc Bulger's best 3 years with the Rams, his stats were very similar to Flacco's in his three years here. Bulger threw for a bit more yardage but also threw more interceptions. Their QB ratings were also similar. I'm cutting Bulger some slack his last couple of seasons because the Ram's O line was pretty bad. That being said, I don't know that he is any better than Joe Flacco, but it sure is good to have an experienced veteran back-up if disaster happens. Also, I wouldn't mind seeing him get some snaps if Joe is having a real bad game, such as the first Bengals game this year.

I'd welcome Marc back as a backup but, for all those wanted him to start: Joe Flacco >>> Marc Bulger. I don't even need to argue it. The numbers, film, experience, and the wins we've had with him speak for themselves.

I think every player who isn't a proven vet should have to compete for their job. When everyone knows they're job is in jeopardy (including staff) you might start to see a better performance from them or the next man up.

Money talks Bulger! So I can't wait to see what he might do when one of these other teams that are in desperate need of a legit vet to lead their team, contact his agent and start throwing dollar amounts at him! But I would for sure like to get him back for the right price, we need some experience in that second slot behind Joe, for that just in case factor.

I hear you talking Marc. If indeed you are sincere in your pledge then welcome back but if not then it was nice having you on our show. We have some nice parting gifts for you.

I guess at 33 to sit back, do nothing and collect more money than Flacco who took all the snaps is a pretty good gig. This brings me back to Flacco. Why would this young man who has all the talent in the world and such a bright future continue to want to qb in Baltimore under Cameron who is restricting his ability to grow and therefore make more money (like Bulger who is sitting around on his butt)? If I was Flacco, I would be asking for a trade to get out from underneath the dictator Cameron and his horrible offensive scheming. Flacco will end up in the Arena league if he continues to allow Cameron to be his coach. This boy is smart enough to know it is time to move on based on the development that Ryan, Rogers and other young qbs are getting and he is not. He absolutely can be a great talent in Baltimore if the Ravens get rid of Cameron, if not, then Flacco's agent should be ringing phones and finding out where he can be traded to. Maybe Cameron will get Troy Smith back, that is the talent level of qb he is skilled enough to coach or maybe Bulger can earn some of that money next year,

Steve Bisciotti is suppose to have a meeting with Harbs today. Hopefully, this meeting will be about Harbaugh stating Cameron will be OC next year... If we do get another OC I'd say sign Bulger and give Flacco 4 games to run this offense next season, if he is'nt doing a good job then put Bulger in as the starter.

A class act and we DO need a backup but not a $3.8 million backup. Maybe 1.2mill if we don't get better on our O line :-)
See what he's worth for a draft pick and decide later.

Let Bulger play next year and let Flacco back him up. Flacco is looking like a bust.
****************
Good lord really? Compare Flacco's numbers to Brady and Manning's numbers in their first three years.....I'm not sayin he will be one of those guys, but he made huge strides this year. Blame the line, blame Cam, but Flacco has played well...how did Matty Ice do down there in ATL????

I would try to trade Bulger. He's not doing anything but warming the bench which anyone can do, and there are soooo many teams out there that are in need of a QB (Cardinals, Panthers, Vikings, Titans, etc.) that we could probably get a pretty high draft pick for him.

Definitely keep Bulger...It is too early to tell if Flacco is a bust..i hope he is not but if they look at a QB in future drafts then they may think he is a bust.
