[Blogs] 10 Questions Heading Into Offseason

327 posts in this topic

What's done is done. Now we have to get back to work right away and prepare for the 2011 season. It shall be a great one...

Some things to think about:
1. Sign Cundiff and Koch

2. Fire Cameron - He's a joke. Enough said. Keep Mattison - Although the defense wasn't AMAZING this year, they did do pretty darn good with no secondary. (Besides Ed Reed)

3. Keep John Harbaugh - He is everything you want in a head coach: Energetic, Young, Determined, Great Backround. The list goes on...

4. Sign Ngata - He's young, and the best DT in the NFL. Enough said there.

5. Get rid of Housh, He can't get open and when he does, he drops the ball...

6. Keep Mason if he would like to stay. He makes an excellent third string receiver.

7. We need 1 Deshean Jackson type WR. And we are set at the WR position

8. Beef up the 0-Line

9. We need at least 1 Shutdown corner, the guy from the Raiders would be nice but highly unlikely.

10. We do all those things and I think 2011 will be our year. LETS GO RAVENS!

well in the other artical it says steve and ozzie will be looking at cam and what he has done. So even if harbs dont want him to go..its not up to him in the end!
[/quote]

That's exactly what i was thinking about... People say Cameron might stay because Harbaugh has some emotional attachment to him so he won't fire him - and I was like... Hey, wait a second! Is Harbaugh the highest authority to decide and act upon the assistants? If the owner and the Front office boss thinks Cam should go (IF!!! - we don't know) but Harbaugh doesn't - is his word stronger than theirs? I doubt so.

Hi,
I didn't mean to say they did heck of a job - I just wanted to say that we did use our rookie TE's...

Ok. So I will let that one pass. They didn't use McGahee enough. They didn't use Stallworth at all except for the 3 or 4 reverses handed to him and the one 60 yard bomb caught against the steelers. I think there was one other pass he caught in a game.

All the puzzle pieces were in place. No one was injured. But we saw a ton of 3 and outs on offense....

Folks need to stop acting like we would have walked all over the Jets. If Ravens did beat Pittsburgh, Cam would still be on borrowed time and not have a legitimate game plan to win. The Jets are a team that planned to utilize their 3 stellar wideouts and 2 quality running backs, along with their tight end.

Schottenheimer has done a crappy job with Gang Green, but he did a much better job than Cam has done with the Ravens. He OVER-achieved in '08 and then under-achieves with everything that was acquired.

Now you see, I won't argue any of this :D

with all of our offseason aditions, this season was disapointing. i mean dropping 9 spots in overall offense since last year is pathetic. i dont want to see either of our coordinators back. cameron just isnt living up to his "great offensive mind", and mattison just isnt cutting it either. i want to see josh mcdaniels in as our new OC, i mean look what he did with the "mighty kyle orton" over in denver? he would help flacco improve and our offence click. then i want to see mike singletary in as our new defensive coordinator. he fits the ravens image of a hardhitting defenseman back in his day, as well as led a great defense in san fransisco considering what he had to work with. we also need to make aditions like that corner from oakland whos name escapes me. with a better secondary we could blitz more. we need to keep our stars that ACTUALLY PERFORMED

and cut the other suposed stars like stallworth to clear some cap room. this years draft is crazy important as last years was disapointing. i hate to play the pestimist here but we need to do some restructing here before our entire roster retires next year!

I was going to post but after reading flacco_legend's post below, I have very little to add! Great post and very well done!

Watching all that went wrong that 2nd half from coaching to QB throwing interception to Rice fumbling to 2 of our good receivers dropping balls and what seems to be a rough call on the run back, WOW!! It almost looks like a Voo Doo curse!! I have never seen anything like that before, and as another poster wrote, we seem to have only played 1 half of football several games this year.

Haloti Ngata, Marshall Yanda, Josh Wilson, Cundiff, and Koch must be resigned. The others can walk if we have to let them. And sign or draft others to fill their Roles. We need to draft an explosive WR. Think if we drafted Hakeem Nicks two years ago, or Dez Bryant last year how much different our Offense would be. We didn't take any shots deep that would scare the corners of the steelers and make them play off. We also need an OLB to come in and be a pass rushing machine to play opposite of Suggs. JJ is solid, but he just doesn't get to the QB. We need a guy to play 3rd downs that is explosive and a nightmare to block in passing situations. Our other biggest glaring need is Right Tackle. Our O-line played bad for their standards and the main reason was because we had to move everyone around. Yanda is a beast at Guard, but he cant Maul D-lineman playing tackle, like he can playing guard. One injury would cause us to have three lineman playing different positions then they normally play. And lastly Oher is very young but he needs to step up his game. He gave up the most sacks this year on the O-line and also had the most penalty's. You're a 1st round pick who was anointed great last year. You gotta be smart, consistent and keep your head up. Don't let one bad play affect the rest of your game.

i think signing Champ bailey would be better than Asamugha or however you spell it. Hes shut down, even though hes older he would make our secondary A LOT better. And he probably wants to go to a contender and that would probably make our Defense Great again.

Defense- We can keep the same coordinator with new wringles in his coverages, blitzes, and schemes. I like the way Don Capers uses Charles Woodson, how about picking up Asomugha and having him in packages like that. With Foxworth, Wilson, Asomugha, and Webb I think the corners would be very solid. I dont like Landry in coverage. He plays the run well but doesn't cover well at all. Everytime a team does deep, let's just say they (veteran quaterbacks) don't pick on Ed Reed. If you think about it, the big plays are always to the quaterback's right side. A young safety picked up in the draft wouldn't be bad. For the linebackers I like JJ but I think he should be moved to play inside next to Ray. If Kindle can comeback healthy and strong I like him on the other side of sizzle. As for the line, I would like to see more of Cody instead of Gregg, again it's not personal. I would also like to see Ngata as the nose in the 3-4 scheme a little more. We need to get off blocks much better. Again for pressure packages steal some looks from Don Capers.

I will have to agree with Flacco_legend also. But would like to add keeping Josh Wilson. No he wasn't a shut down corner, but did come on strong the later part of the season. O line def needs revamped.

To me, we only had one more game to play this season had we beaten the Steelers. Rex's schemes confused Brady and that man's not easily confused. (Beat Peyton too.) Imagine what he would have done to our O-line; he knows us inside-out.

So if were still in it, we would have got embarrassed next week, in our own home (just like ATL did). SB was never gonna happen given how chronic our O has been. Ray was delusional; we all were. Neg me if you like; I'm a realist.

We need change, FO. Start and finish with replacing our head coach and his OC with two men more gritty, more talented and less self-interested. And stop getting your ears soothed by talk from two that we're getting somewhere. We're going backwards down a steep hill.

hmmmmm i dont get it these recievers we brought in to make it better didnt give flacco a chance to throw downfield, and the fastest of them all rode the pine all year, whats the story there?

If the ravens ever want to go anywhere in the playoffs, they need a cb that can cover and a wr that can actually get open. Even though they got Boldin, Ray rice still led the team in catches. The o line was terrible all year. I feel like Flacco was under a ton of pressure every play. It was rare for him to have a clean pocket like he had his first 2 seasons.

we need Gaither back at LT.. that boy never gave up sacks like Oher does... just in this one season Oher gave up more sacks than Gaither has in his career with two years as a starter at LT.. if we need to resign Ngata for sure... fire cam and mattison... when we rush three, we get burned... it hasnt stopped anyone all year... not once.. we put 4 down to go after big ben and it worked... we go 3 after him and he destroyed us... we put 3 after matt ryan and he torched us.. same with schaub.. we put 4 down on the final play in over time during that game and look how it won out.. i like how we came out aggresive and dominated the first half.. and then our pep talk in the locker room must have been "alright we got this, were just gonna do what we have done all year and give the game away in the second half and try to win in the forth quarter... we cant have josh freeman with more 4th qtr comebacks than joe."

If Mattison stays make him sign a "contract" that reads "I will NEVER rush fewer than 4"!
Ngata, Yanda, Wilson, Koch and Cundiff definately. Would love to keep Le'Ron, but if they aren't going to let him carry the rock then spend your money elsewhere.

Hi,
Dez Bryant was pick #24, one earlier than our theoretical first pick (#25 went to the Broncos) and way earlier than our actual first pick (#43). So, I don't know if we had any intention to get him, but even if we did, he was gone by the time we had a chance to pick.

(of course, we could have traded up, but apparently the management didn't feel the need to do so.)

cam i think should be on his way out, FACE IT 3 YEARS AND new weapons and our offense iz still weak, GET A NEW COORDINATOR WITH NEW SCHEMES AND IDEAS, and won who realizes that you dont take a sack on first and then call a draw on 2nd and long when everybody knows that is what you gonna do. We let REX LEAVE AND LOOK WHAT HES DONE, IF HARBS WONT SWAP STAFF THEN HE SHOULDNT GET AN EXTENSION

About the draft - or rather, the luck element of it... Some names everyone who's interested in NFL knows - and their draft pick numbers, only the last 5 drafts, later than 3rd round picks - plus the #1 pick of those drafts:

2006:
#1: Mario Williams (Texans)

#111 (rd. 4): Demetrius Williams (Ravens)
#118 (rd. 4): Stephen Gostkowski (Pats)
#119 (rd. 4): Brandon Marshall (Broncos)
#126 (rd. 4): Elvis Dumervil (Broncos)
#146 (rd. 5): Dawan Landry (Ravens)
#203 (rd. 6): Sam Koch (Ravens)
#207 (rd. 6): Antoine Bethea (Colts)
#252 (rd. 7): Marques Colston (Saints)

Undrafted: Corey Mays (Pats)
Miles Austin (Cowboys)

2007:
#1: JaMarcus Russell (Raiders)

#112 (rd. 3): Daniel Sepulveda (Steelers)
#137 (rd. 4): Le'Ron McClain (Ravens)
#162 (rd. 5): Brent Celek (Eagles)
#178 (rd. 6): Nick Folk (Cowboys)
#244 (rd. 7): Jason Snelling (Falcons)

2008:
#1: Jake Long (Dolphins)

#127 (rd. 4): Jacob Tamme (Colts)
#176 (rd. 6): Jalen Parmele (Dolphins)
#205 (rd. 6): Pierre Garcon (Colts)
#227 (rd. 7): Peyton Hillis (Broncos)

2009:
#1: Matthew Stafford (Lions)

#172 (rd. 5): David Buehler (Cowboys)
#256 (rd. 7): Ryan Succop (Chiefs)

Undrafted: Arian Foster (Texans)

2010:
#1: Sam Bradford (Rams)

Summary: how well we'll draft in August won't be clear until at least about 2013...

Question #11 should be - How did they have 3 offensive minds on one sideline come up with that type of output - Zorn, Cameron, and Saunders.

Whatever. Ravens fans say a wish for JJ Watt from the U of Wisconsin: http://nflsoup.com/?p=6236

I'm in grad school at UW and have watched this guy play for the last 2 years. That guy is a stud. They could use a corner, but again, considering they'll have the 26th-28th pick, he might still be around in a draft full of top notch defensive ends.
