Polamalu Vs Reed

26 posts in this topic

seeing how im a die hard ravens fan i am obviously going with reed. i think he is by far the better ball hawk and can hit just as hard and good as polamalu(macluster hit) excuse my spelling. but then why is it that everytime i turn on the tv polamlu is all over it. he seems to get far more exposure television wise and far more respect. which is crazy if you ask me. so if you had to start a defense who do YOU take reed or troy?

Depends on who else is available for the other position you don't pick....this really isn't a fair comparison, as we've all said everytime this is brought up.

I disagree with the exposure part. They've both been talked about by the media equally. I might even say that Ed Reed has more media love that Troy Polamalu. Ed Reed was in the Top 100 Greatest Players of All Time while Troy was not. Troy should have at least gotten some recognition. He's been lights out his whole career and may possibly become a Hall of Famer.

This one's gonna be pretty close. I'd still pick Ed Reed, but Troy isn't that far behind.

Nobody makes a QB pay like my boy Reed but Roethlisberger is no scrub QB, Troy isn't as good in coverage but he's insanely clutch.

you might be right about the exposure but maybe its just because im biased and dont live close to baltimore or the maryland networks. lets just pray reed plays better than troy today!

Reed all day. He's the better ball hawk and he's playing on emotions (family business AND Playoffs). Not to mention Troy is banged up.

agreed!

Reed = FS
Polamalu = SS

their roll is completely different! but...they are the best at what they do!

Depends on what your looking for. They play different positions.

He is the Ray Lewis to there defense. We still are a pretty good defense without Reed, but without Troy, the Steelers go a big step down defensively.

You honestly can't go wrong with either though.

Ugh, I'm so tired of Reed/Polamalu discussions.

Back before Reed got his lingering injuries, Reed was probably as great an "all around" safety as Polamalu and still as great a ball hawk as he is today. Right now though, they are very different safeties. As every Baltimore fan knows, Reed is the best in the league at baiting quarterbacks, playing coverage and picking off the ball. Not to mention, Ed has a nose for getting the ball to the endzone after an interception.

Polamalu is more of a jack of all trades, with him being much, much better in run support and pass rushing. He's still able to make some great picks, just not with the consistency and reputation of Ed. Both men are very clutch, though. However, the big difference is Reed will score with the ball off a turnover. More often than not, Troy sets up a score off the turn over.

zgf123, it's trifling to consider that Palamalu's greater media exposureis is related more to selling the Hollywood persona or visage. He's got all that hair and a bright smile.

Reeed is personable, however, a more sober personality.

Performance comparisons is unqual and unfair; since, playing different positions.
As most already noted they both are clutch.

Good point, Ronin: Palamalu is a play creator; while, Reed gets more directly involved.

With bias, I favor Reed. He has an uncanny intuitive sense, where to locate on the field, and disperses pressure on coverage elsewhere on the field.

This is one of those comparisons that shouldn't even be brought up.

Reed is a free safety, Polamalu is a strong safety, this is like comparing a linebacker to a defensive end. Two totally different areas of responsibility.

So here is the bottom line, Reed is probably the best free safety in the game and Polamalu is probably the best strong safety in the game.

how in the hell can you say that? That is a pure homer statement that makes zero sense. If anything it shows that Reed was not good at the strong safety position, thus moved back to free safety.
[/quote]

2004 ed reed stats while playing strong safety-76 combined tackles,2 sacks,9 ints, 3 ff, 1 td.(nfl defensive player of the year)
2010 polamalu-63 combined tackles,1 sack, 7 ints, 1 ff,1 int

yea it shows he wasnt good enough so he had to move to fs lmao!

Don't you love irony? :rolleyes:

Ed was so terrible at strong safety he won Defensive Player of the Year and had to move to free safety.
