Over Time Rules In The Playoffs

7 posts in this topic

I would not be the least bit shocked if Saturdays game went into over time. Likely even late into over time.
I know a play-off game can not end in a tie, but is there something other than a score that can end ecesssive over time?

Meaning, if no one scores in over time, how does the game end?

and then what?

WHAT IF, no one scores.

Granted by then I am sure every one would be completely exhausted and some one would make a significant enough mistake, but I am assuming there has to be a plan in place incase the unthinkable happens.

That's correct. The overtime period extends until someone wins. No playoff game in the Super Bowl era has gone past double-overtime.

With these new overtime playoff rules, the traditional 15-minute extra period is played with the new rules in effect. A touchdown wins it for either team at any point, a field goal on the first possession results in an opportunity for the second team to match it, and sudden death rules apply after each team has had one opportunity to score. Those sudden death rules remain in effect for any additional overtime periods.
