Marc Bulger Situation

20 posts in this topic

I'm not sure how this could happen or his exact contract details, like is he an outright free agent after this season or is he a restricted free agent or what.

With all the teams that around going to be looking for a starting caliber QB, Marc Bulger's name is starting to come up for various team vacancies at his position.

My question is are the Ravens in a position to be able to trade him to a team that needs a starter or is he just going to be a free agent where he can leave and the Ravens get nothing in return? I think it would be smart to make it so the teams that want him would have to give up something for him, either a draft pick or a trade for another play....like another CB, DE, or tackle/guard.

I'm not familiar with how his contract was set up, does anyone know? This could be great for the Ravens to get something in return for him. Most likely he isn't sticking around next year, not with all the teams needing a QB and him still being young enough to be starting. No doubt he would be an upgrade for a lot of teams.

Any thoughts? comments?

Bulger would be an unrestricted free agent because he's an 11-year veteran who only signed a one-year deal. Restricted free agents are players with at least three accrued seasons of service but less than five accrued seasons of service in the league, usually with their original team. An accrued season is referred to as having been active or on injured reserve for at least 6 regular season games or more with full pay.

So, to answer your question, no, the Ravens would be unable to trade Bulger for any value. The trade deadline has already passed and Bulger becomes a free agent once the offseason begins, the day after the Super Bowl.

Ive read alot of reports that say Arizona wants him in the worst way and Wisenhunt wanted to sign him in the offseason after he was released but the Owner wouldnt approve it because they'd already signed Anderson.

There are a lot of teams that could use Bulger so I can't see him coming back. He's had a full year to get healthy, he's a proven vet. There's a lot to like about the guy.

Which will leave us at an odd situation at Backup QB. Perhaps Troy Smith can come back after he isn't resigned by the 49ers?

I understand all that but I was hoping there was some way we could tag him or something so we could have him and use him as trade bait or something. It sucks that we won't get anything in return for him.

Oh well, such it life.

After they've taken care of the other needs, I'd like to see the team draft a development guy like Andy Dalton or Greg McElroy.

I know one thing for sure, once Bulger is gone the Ravens will need to bring in another veteran to back him up for cheap, I don't think we should have some inexperienced rookie as backup in case something were to happen to Flacco, God forbid...but if Flacco ever went down we need a capable replacement so the season isn't totally wasted.

Not a chance he comes back, failing to beat the Rams in a must win game, going bonkers on the sidelines with Singletary, and the fact that the team saw him expendable even though they knew Bulger was just a 1 year thing are all reasons in my eyes why Smith wouldnt be brought back.

I agree here, Troy won't be back in Baltimore. I wouldn't be surprised if we took someone from FA, who knows they will be a backup wherever they go and would be willing to take a low money deal.

Bulger was good insurance though.

whos to say bulger doesnt resign here? i mean its not like he doesnt like it here.
Because assuming their is a CBA next year, I doubt we leave that much money invested in a backup QB, when some other team will be willing to pay.

Maybe because teams are already mentioning him as brining him in as their starting QB...he's definitely an upgrade over anything they have in Arizona, Carolina, Seattle, San Francisco, Buffalo, etc etc etc

Just a gut feeling but I really believe Bulger wants to get a starting gig next season. This season he probably wanted to get healthy , collect a nice pay-check and not deal with the non-stop pressure of being the starting QB. He's still pretty young and has a history in the league , why not
Hopefully we can go after Hasselbeck or Kitna if they're free agents

I don't know if there isn't a QB in the NFL that feels that way. If he does, than he shouldn't be on anybody's roster.

The only problem with tagging him is that he would be paid the average salary of the top-5 highest-paid players at his position, which is a lot of cash to gamble on if the team fails to trade him. Additionally, though there are desperate teams in need of a QB that would be willing to give up a draft pick to acquire him, they likely wouldn't want to pick up his inflated salary and could not negotiate a new one to alleviate his cap figure even if they gave him an extension. It's too big of a financial risk for the Ravens.

It would be great to keep him because of the experience factor but as stated it's the money factor and iam sure he wants to be a starter and only an injury or bad performance by Flacco would make that happen .

Vince Young is out there not to mention the dog killer. :229031_rofl: I don't think the Ravens will attract too many decent vets because they know there is no QB competition here and they will likely ride the pine for a year unless Flacco gets hurt.

Well, we're going to need a good back up just in case, and I'm not talking about Boldin.
After taking the beating that he did, I wouldn't be shocked if Bulger wanted to sit on the sidelines and collect a decent paycheck for another year.
The thing is, none of us know how well he can still play the game since we haven't seen him play yet, during the season.
Let's hope nothing happens to Joe, knock on wood!
