Bears' Former First Round Pick On His Way Out?

13 posts in this topic

Cedric Benson's rocky relationship with the Chicago Bears got murkier Saturday after the running back's arrest on a drunken

driving charge in Austin, Texas, his second arrest in little more than a month.

Bears officials said they would treat the matter seriously. Benson's attorney said the former Texas star had a few drinks with dinner but didn't think he was intoxicated, and cooperated with police.

The arrest comes a month after Benson was charged with boating while intoxicated and resisting arrest. He has said neither charge is true, and those cases are pending.

Not the smartest thing to do when you're already on thin ice...not nearly as bad as Pacman Jones going to a strip club immediately after promising Roger Goodell he'd change, but still not the best thing for Benson right now.

With Chicago having drafted Matt Forte from Tulane in the 2nd round of this past draft, Benson's probably out.

to be fair, there were witnesses who said that the police used excessive force on Benson and that he was co operating. Maybe Chicago police are just Rears.

True, but innocent or not, he should've laid low until the boating incident was resolved in court.

And regardless, a DWI still wouldn't bode well; it would've been justification for releasing Benson even if the first arrest hadn't happened. This second arrest just gives the Bears more ammo.

Update:

The Bears placed Cedric Benson on waivers Monday, two years before the end of his contract and three years into a disappointing career with the team.

"Cedric displayed a pattern of behavior we will not tolerate," Bears general manager Jerry Angelo said in a statement. "As I said this past weekend, you have to protect your job. Everyone in this organization is held accountable for their actions. When individual priorities overshadow team goals, we suffer the consequences as a team. Those who fail to understand the importance of 'team' will not play for the Chicago Bears."

Seems like you can mess up on the field all you want and stay with the Bears (Grossman, Benson until now), but screw up more than once off the field and you're gone.

not a very smart 1st round pick

A lot of picks in the 1st round of that draft weren't very smart picks.

The 2005 NFL Draft was one of the weaker draft classes in recent history.

Minus Benson, roughly 13 of those players (at first glance) are not starting for their respective teams (whether they're with a new team or not).

And there have been only 12 Pro Bowlers to come out of that entire draft class thus far, 8 of them in the first three rounds.

This is in stark contrast to the 2004 Draft, where there were 13 Pro Bowlers in the first round ALONE.

In addition, almost every one of those first-round selections are still starters (even if they aren't with the team that drafted them), with the exception of three players; one isn't even in the NFL anymore (Ahmad Carroll), and two are still free agents (Kevin Jones and Rashaun Woods).

Benson was a huge bust and I wonder what Goodell is going to do since this latest arrest of his... would any team bother picking him up in hopes that he just needs a change of scenery like PacMan Jones for example (so far he has stayed out of trouble)?

Benson's greatest success came when he was the backup to Thomas Jones.

I doubt that any team would bother picking him up in hopes of having him as their starter. They might sign him for depth, but I don't see him competing for a starting job.

I'll put it like this: even with a crowded backfield, Cadillac Williams has a much better chance of becoming a starter in Tampa Bay than Cedric Benson does with any team in the league as of right now.

Some team is bound to take a chance on him mid-season, though, most likely due to injury.

Benson is the prime example of why the NFL needs a rookie salary cap. He got his big pay day simply because he was a first round pick and then he didnt even bother earning it. He was lazy and unmotivated, and from what I have heard from Bears fans half the guys in that locker room couldnt stand him because of his attitude.

Benson was a cancer both with Salary cap and on field production. Glad he is gone-

I'm a huge Bears Fan and I live here in MD

hence the name.
