Can't say I'm surprised, but I'm still puzzled at why he would be fired after the team finally made it to 8-8.

You beat me to it!

Anyway, this was a dumb move by Al Davis. I was personally becoming a big fan of his. Loved the way he taught and interacted with his players (from what I had seen).

Stupid, Stupid, Stupid.

But Al Davis defines insanity. Doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results. You finally have somebody that has put the team in the right direction and you oust the guy. Raiders need stability. They are on the verge of having a playoff caliber team. Now they'll need to learn a new playbook, etc.

Horrible move. Sure, 8-8 isn't where you want to be, but when you're 6-0 in your division and you've posted your best record since losing in the Super Bowl less than a decade ago, you can't complain about going 0.500.

Tom Cable was just the type of coach that the Raiders needed: brash, intense, and aggressive. By extension, he injected the old-school Raiders attitude into the team on the field, even though he wasn't exactly a model citizen off the field.

I can almost guarantee that a new starting QB will be on the field next year yet again, and it'll be at the expense of Jason Campbell, who's finally caught on with the offense. Nnamdi Asomugha will probably be left with another losing season to overshadow yet another outstanding individual effort. Thomas Howard will probably bolt in protest over the way he and former teammate Kirk Morrison were painted the scapegoats for the Raiders' struggling defense. I could go on and on, but the point is, Al Davis will regret having jettisoned his franchise's last hope of glory before he'll meet his grave.

I agree with the post that the wrong coaches are being fired and the wrong coaches are the ones who are staying. I don't see how teams expect Coaches to turn things around in just 2 seasons. I don't know if people are looking too much into the success of John Harbaugh, Mike Smith and Rex Ryan where they had success right off the bat and teams now expect that, but by gosh if teams only allowed 2 years... every team would have 5 new coaches in 10 years!

Now I'm in no way a Mangini or Cable supporter, but if they were given proper time as in 4 to 5 years as the Head Coach to implement their system and find their guys to turn around a team they would be good head coaches. Look at what Mangini did with the Jets, he was there for 3 seasons and he built the Jets up pretty good and here the Jets fire him because of Brett Favre, and in just 2 seasons he had the Browns playing well and just another year and add a WR for Colt McCoy the Browns could have won 8-9 games next season. It's funny how 2 over the hill QBs in Favre & Delhomme cost Mangini his job. Someone is going to hire Mangini or Cable, heck they both might be Head Coaches again and if they have a team who is patient and allows them 4-5 years to turn things around... Mangini will look like Mangenious all over again.

I don't think it was a horrible move. Cable and Hue didn't hit it off and there was an option in Cables contract that would give him guaranteed money and Davis didn't wanna pay that for a coach that had a 500 record.

Cable will have no problem finding a job.

Also, Hue Jackson just got promoted to head coach.

A BIG congratulations to him!

Cant wait for this to be confirmed but it looks like hes the next coach.

Congrats to Hue Jackson!

Jackson will certainly make a fine head coach. However, I'm not sure if he can deliver immediate results with the mess that Al Davis has lumped into his hand. Though Jackson was on the staff, he may not have the same blueprint that Cable had in mind. Davis better recognize that he needs to give Jackson time or he may never see another Raiders playoff berth before he dies.

Al Davis knows he's getting up there and doesn't have time to let his franchise to progress, he thinks there's a magical cure to make his team suddenly Super Bowl champions. There isn't. That's why I don't think we'll see the Raiders back in a Superbowl while Al Davis is alive/owner.

You called it, man. I questioned it, then, and I question it, now, but you've got that foresight haha. Al Davis rids the Raiders of the only positive change they've had in about a decade.

I'm all for our own Hue Jackson being promoted to HC and I wish him the best of luck but it just doesn't make sense to me either...

It was really interesting to see what Lechler, their All-Pro punter and key member of the roster, had to say about the situation.
"I seriously believe that it would set us back again," Lechler said Monday. "I can't go through another head coach. I just can't. I've been through too many of them. And they all come in here and say the same thing: 'I'm going to do this, I'm going to turn this.' No, you're not. I'd rather be with the guy that's here right now, and we'll roll with him."
The Raiders are denying a report that Hue Jackson has already been named the next head coach. (LINK)

This could mean one of a few things:
1) The Raiders are trying to pursue Bill Cowher or Jim Harbaugh
2) The Raiders are trying to maintain what little pride they have left by making the announcement themselves
3) Al Davis is hearing what the players are saying and will try to re-hire Tom Cable to prevent a mutiny

I bet that Davis will re-hire Cable and then try to say that he was released so that they could negotiate a new contract. Problem for Davis is, Cable now has all the leverage in negotiations and can bump his price up significantly.

I heard that Al Davis was upset that Cable didn't play Bruce Campbell and Darren McFadden in the season finale. Man Al has some serious issues.

He's upset yet they blew out a playoff team. Why injure your star RB. Only answer to this is Al Davis had McFadden on his fantasy team and he plays in a 17 week league. He needed Bruce in there to help McFadden out.

It would be interesting to see him ask to be released so he could go to a contender.

Why be upset? They won the game and in a convincing fashion. It's something wrong with him.

Al Davis will never die.

A rediculous firing that'll result in the Raiders losing more. Once upon a time, Raiders fans had a lot of respect and love for Al Davis.

Is it really? It's more like a "Watch how you tread Hue!" or your career could be messed up by Al Davis.

Since it's apparent that Hue Jackson will be the Head Coach and every off-season The Raiders say every player is up for grabs, as in you can ask for a player and try to trade for him.... I say this would be perfect to get Aso or Louis Murphy.

I do agree with you, Franchise - the Raiders have been through hell over the years since their Super Bowl loss, and this latest incident makes me wonder if Al Davis is losing his mind.

I can honestly say that letting Tom Cable go as head coach is just another thing that makes me lose respect for Al Davis. I do have respect for the Raider team, but this latest of Al's handiwork makes me sick. I have to believe that Al Davis should relinquish control of the Raiders to someone who will run things with a steady hand and some common sense and decency.

Who knows, Al may just hang on to the end, but should that happen, it will be an inglorious end. Mark my words.

Wow... talk about being on the bad side of Al Davis... first he fires Cable and could Long time Punter Shane Lechler be next? After Lechler went on about how tired he is of change and "dealing with Al Davis" and showing his displeasure for firing Cable the Raiders have signed a new Punter. If Lechler was trying to get his way out of Oakland, he might have done so.

http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2011/01/05/a-day-after-lechlers-rant-raiders-sign-a-new-punter/
On Wednesday, the Raiders signed punter Glenn Pakulak. The team announced the move on its website.
What I wonder is... why has he stayed with Oakland so long, he could have made a bunch of money being a Free Agent and could have been on a much better team. Someone is going to get a Great Punter in the off-season.

Damn...Lechler is a smart dude. Nnamdi should take a page out of his book, then Ozzie can jump all over that.
