I was watching the network television premiere of EliteXC the other night on CBS, and I was only able to catch the undercard fights. I missed out on the Gina Carano/Kaitlin Young fight, the title bout, and the Kimbo Slice/"Colossus" main event. But, from what I saw from the two fights I managed to catch, it's piqued my interest a little more, but I think watching MMA on Showtime did more for me than that card.

Frankly, the only thing that bothers me about the sport is when there are questionable stoppages. I understand that it's up to the referees to make those calls in order to keep the fighters safe, but I'd rather just let the fighters go at it if they so choose since they understand the risk involved.

At least you don't see that many stoppages in boxing since a knockout is a knockout, period.

I think the big-name guys like Tito Ortiz, Chuck Liddell, Ken Shamrock, etc., were the ones that really got me interested at first. Then the guys that try to crossover like Brock Lesnar and Kimbo Slice are interesting since they're genetic freaks of nature that could potentially redefine the heavyweight class and what it means to have a true heavyweight champion. But, that's only IF they refine their technique and get more convincing wins over established guys.

Then it's probably good that you missed the Kimbo fight. The ref stopped the fight early in the 3rd round, after Kimbo landed 3 punches on Colossus, who was standing up but starting to sway. Colossus was absolutely furious at the ref--it looked like he had a bit left in him.

I was rooting for Kimbo all the way, but that stoppage made me say, "wait...what?"

Edit: I'm pretty new to MMA, but I'm starting to get more interested in it. Hopefully I can catch some top-level events over the summer.

I caught some clips of the fight, particularly the end...and yup, I probably would've been mad if I was watching it live.

Although it looked like Colossus deserved to win (from what I saw), I was still rooting for Kimbo just 'cause the dude LOOKS like he could kill you with his bare hands. That's really it. I understand that he lacks experience and is still rough around the edges (that's even apparent to ME, a newbie to the sport), but he just has this LOOK that makes it hard for me NOT to root for the man to succeed.

Same goes for Brock Lesnar, even though the man personally is a jerk. People I know have met him and say he's a jerk, and his time in WWE (particularly the "behind-the-scenes" interviews) made it apparent that he had an air of smugness to him. But the man is a physical specimen, and it's hard for me to ever want to bet against him, even if he were up against a more experienced fighter.
