Wide Receiver Screens

13 posts in this topic

We have a serious problem with the WR screens Cam runs. He basically leaves our Wide Receivers wide open without any protection for them to try and make a play after the grab. Leaving the WR without any protection can potentially have the same harm as leaving a DE unblocked on the QBs Blindside. If Cam is going to keep running the screens, he needs to do it the proper way to keep our playmakers from getting injured or losing the football.

Stack the WRs to one side of the field. Don't necessarily run the screen every single time you go stack the WRs. Run some run and pass plays from that formation to keep the defense guessing. Look at how NE executes this screen:

It gives Welker the little room he needed to make the TD. Q gets those blocks and it's TD as well.

Here's a play that I've been clamoring for Cam to use in the beginning of the season:

Perfect screen plays right there. We shouldn't be leaving our WR on a lonely island and expect him to break a tackle as soon as he turns around. Give him some room to work with and it'll pay off big anywhere on the field IMO.

Sadly, running a bubble screen near the goal-line is taboo in Cam's world. He'd sooner have Joe throw a fade to Boldin than incorporate a play Q was money on in Arizona into his play-book.

Whenever we do see a screen, it's usually going to Houshmandzadeh. I'd be willing to bet money that Boldin has had less than five screens thrown his way this season. Stallworth hasn't seen one. Pathetic...

That is one play that I have been screaming for for 15 weeks. Is this guy really serious with his idiotic play calling?

It kind of bothers me how simple Cam's passing plays are. Reminds me of something out of a high school playbook. And it's a shame since all of these weapons at WR will not be together next season so we won't know what could have been unless Cam has been saving up some great plays for the playoffs.

Mason and Housh can practically run every route and still get open because of precise route running. They are fine. Q is the muscle that runs every route that sets you up for potential harm and catches balls most WRs won't without thinking twice about it.

How hard is it for Cam to understand that. Q is the muscle so send him on square routes and slants and screens. Mason and Housh are the finesse so let them do everything else. I honestly think I could do better job at OCing.

I agree on all counts. Best case scenario, fire Cam, hire McD. But something tells me that the Ravens wouldn't mind signing Cam to a new deal because of the success of the team and how we've made the playoffs three times in a row. I hope I'm wrong though

Again I say I didn't like Cam when he was head coach for the Dolphins and I don't like him as our Offensive Coordinator. But we're stuck with him for the remainder of the year. Hopefully we will get a better OC next year. Go Ravens!!!

Cam always seems throw in a few "token" plays just do he can say he was mixing it up when most of them never had a chance. Then again, it always comes down to execution and Flacco isnt exactly Brady when it comes to throwing screens.

Whenever you see welker catch a screen its low and in front of him so he getting a step or two start. WHen you see Flacco throw a screen, the receiver has to jump two feet in the air to catch it and the defense has already figured it out by the time their feet hit the ground.

I've seen Joe throw an off-target ball on a few screen attempts but it's not like the WR has had to adjust every time he threw the ball.

Ive never seen Joe throw a quality WR screen pass. He doesnt totally screw every one up, but he's nowhere near Brady-like when it comes to that kind of pass...actually he's almost the opposite of Brady. Where Brady drives the ball down toward the ground on short to intermediate throws, flacco tends to sail the ball.

Really? Well I have. Cam doesn't call screens often but I clearly remember balls the WRs didn't have to adjust to against the Saints, Falcons and Patriots. No, he isn't Brady-like but I don't believe he's as inaccurate throwing them as you imply.

I'd actually really like to see them run alot more slants, Flacco has all the tools to throw a good slant(decent release, good arm and good height). Just watch mark sanchez throw them or aaron rodgers, It completely changes how a defense has to play the recivers. I've seen him throw a few of them sometimes where if mason had made a catch a few times he may have gone the distance. I just don't think cam likes slants. He's really hard headed when it comes to play calling.

I have. But how are you going to compare Flacco ability here to Brady's, the king of small ball?

This and probably why we don't run screens with bunch receivers I think is because how scared Cam is. He rather have 5 drives stall in a row then have 4 go for touchdowns and one go for a pick.
