Ravens Sign Houser

29 posts in this topic

The name Houser sounds kind of like Hauschka :scared2:

But in all serious, Harbs is a long time special teams coach so I'm sure he made a good choice.

From what I heard, just don't take any tax tips from him. If he's been out of football for 2 years, then what kind of game shape is he in. What is a LS anyway? A fat <guy> to plug the hole in the middle.

I don't know how much game shape a LS has to be in. Just snap and let your gaurds aid you in the blocking. A LS isn't usually fat. He's just a pivotal guy that can snap the ball a long distance for punts and FGs. Its actually a lot harder than it seems.

If he struggles, you'll see Koch and Cundiff off their usual games as well.

Very true.

Hauschka was terrible for us, but Katula's snaps last year weren't perfect either considering he was suffering some elbow injury I think.

Yeah, it's not as crucial for long-snappers to have seen live game action except to get used to crowd noise. They don't have to do anything complicated with blocking, they just have to snap the ball accurately a certain distance beyond the usual snap taken from a traditional offensive formation. It's a highly specialized skill and not just anyone can do it. A bad snap can greatly alter the trajectory of a kick or can result in a broken play entirely if it's delivered wildly. Casual observers often take for granted the precision that goes into special teams because it's so routine.

Long-snappers are unique in that they are anonymous until they make a mistake. Therefore, they prefer to remain as under-the-radar as possible or else they're probably not doing their job and will be looking for a job soon enough.

This is the best we can do?
Haha who would you have picked up instead? Got a list of long-snapping candidates on hand? I think the Ravens, John Harbaugh, and Jerry Rosburg know what they're doing here...

I know. I agree with you. I was just thinking it would be nice to have someone without baggage and a possible distraction. But hopefully it will not have anything to do with how he performs on the field.

Here's hoping he's the best in the league, and we win in Dallas!

Well we have a new LS now, at least it wasnt during the playoffs
Holy crap WHO CARES!!! We got a new water boy call the press!!! Who really cares, it's a long snapper and injuries happen. Does that mean we need to talk about and evaluate every last person that joins the team?? Is this just another subject/player you would want to ridicule and talk non stop about? Give it up on these crazy long drawn out posts about abunch of nothing. So we signed a long snapper whoop tee doo! Man people please find something else to talk about, other than a signing of a freaking FILL IN PLAYER!!! My god blow the Flacco and benching subject up, other than this garbage!! Yeah the (Flacco/benching) comment was fixated, if I even had to point that out!!

Please see my post above about the importance of a long-snapper.

It's a specialized position and not something that just any offensive lineman can do. It's not the same as snapping a ball from an offensive position. We, of all fans, should know how important a long-snapper is after last season when Matt Katula's tendonitis resulted in lots of shanked kicks from Steve Hauschka (his own horrid kicking accuracy aside).

Imagine if a snap was botched on a potential game-winning field goal in the Super Bowl. Then there wouldn't be any doubt about how important a long-snapper is, because there'd be 50 billion threads crucifying him.

Hey, long snapping came off without a hitch today. I was worried coming in, after how good our special teams has been so far, so it's good to know Houser looks to be a good catch.
