New Fans

44 posts in this topic

I live in Delaware. I have been a fan and season ticket holder since the beginning. Delaware has been primarily a Philadelphia Eagles state. However, it is also a University of Delaware state. The selection of Joe Flacco has created a large influx of new Ravens' fans. They watched him lead the team to the championship game this year and are going to support him as a Raven. it is very refreshing to see all the new Ravens' fans.

I am not big on this concept. Football is a team sport. People who cheer for a team due to one player are not fans of that team they are fans of that player. Its the same thing with all the OSU/ Troy Smith fans. This just seems like a bunch of fair weather fans in the makings. Not that there's anything wrong with that.

Yeah it only get tiresome when they start complaining because their favorite player is getting "slighted" in their eyes.

There's always room on the Ravens bandwagon for some new fans. Besides, if they've been college fans for a while, they're probably ready to move up to the NFL.

That's why I've taken the diplomatic approach with Joe Flacco and the QB competition.

But at least I lucked out and was already a Ravens fan to begin with; otherwise, I'd flip out if Flacco was forced to the bench for any other NFL team. :P

Well a lot of other team fans may not be as familiar with ALL of our players. If they start following our team because of Flacco... they will see how beast the rest of our team really is. It's never a bad thing getting new fans to a team.

True that is always a possibility, I know when I started following the Ravens I didn't know everyone on the roster, but after following them longer I discovered several "unknown" players who were awesome to follow. However, on the same note that is most likely the case with every team in the NFL as well :P

Yup, every fan starts off slowly, and I'm almost ashamed that I didn't know every player's name and jersey number when I went to my first Ravens game in 2004 against Buffalo (Deion Sanders' last INT TD of his career!)...

But, this is how the NFL continues to thrive, so bandwagon fans are inevitable and not ENTIRELY a bad thing...until they leave the bandwagon, anyway...lol.

On a similar yet unrelated note (lol), just remember...I was the FIRST Ravens fan from Delaware round these parts!...

Just as long as they are willing to support this team. I've been a season ticket holder since 96' (well my family was considering I was 9) and theres nothing I hate more then fair weather fans.

The more fans the Raven have the better, We need new fans since the fact that were still a young team, and the east coast hated team. As long as they like the Ravens as a team and not just follow Flacco only.

I like being the most hated team in the NFL. I think our players feed off of it.

I have to admit, living in Redskin country, bandwagon fans are the most annoying thing ever. They don't know anything about the team, they will turn against the team in an instance, and they really give the team a bad name. For instance, back when we won the Superbowl, I remember all these people telling me how badly the Ravens sucked ect., but then once they were in the playoffs, all of a sudden the same people claim to have always been Raven's fans, yet they knew nothing about the team other than Ray Lewis. Now if these new fans have the chance to be more than just fair weather fans then yeah that is great, but otherwise I really don't care for them.

I agree I just moved about 20 miles away from my old house which is just over the Delaware line and I work with nothing but Eagle fans from DE and they are trying to cheer for him .. I am not real pumped about it but I guess a fan is a fan as long as they stay true once they commit..

That won't last. You know how fickle Eagles fans in DE are.

They'll turn on him if he plays well in Week 12 against the Eagles this season (IF he gets the starting nod at that point, anyway). Granted, the game MAY be in Baltimore, but there'll be plenty of Eagles fans (especially from Delaware) who'll be more than willing to make the trip, given how close Philly and Baltimore are. And, of course, the entire state of Delaware will definitely be tuned in for that one.

So this Flacco lovefest from (Delaware) Eagles nation probably won't last long, especially since a lot of Eagles fans that I know here HATE the Ravens. ;)

I know we have one very dedicated Eagles fan on this board and the following statement does not include him.

The Eagles fan base as a whole just seems like a bunch of fair weather fans if you ask me.

I agree. I say, welcome aboard if anyone's going to root for the Ravens. I'm not going to pre-judge anyone and call them fairweather until it actually happens.

I don't want fans like that, esp if they used to be Eagles fans. Fake fans are an embarrassment.

That said, if Joe Flacco becomes the starter this season I am selling off my tickets for the year. Tickets are too expensive for them to be wasted on an overrated D-1AA wonder boy who was fortunate enough to be drafted high by a desperate team. I will get more satisfaction from rooting against the Redskins then I will watching the junior varsity QB have trouble with the center exchange.

No offense to you personally, but is that really ALL you have to contribute to the message boards here, is how angry you are that Joe Flacco is a Raven?

Red flags. D-IAA wonder boy. Junior varsity QB. Sounds like media-type buzzwords to me...

Well, it just seems to me as if there's really not much else you like to talk about, other than your anger towards Joe Flacco.

I mean, again, no offense, but do you REALLY have another point in being here if that's ALL you'll talk about?

(Just wondering, that's all...not trying to be sarcastic or anything)

Until training camp starts there isn't really much to talk about that is football related. Although I still maintain my stance of not wanting bandwagon fans.

I believe that many of the Joe Flacco fans will continue on as Ravens fans, even after Flacco is inducted into the NFL Hall of Fame (how's that for a wild prediction!). Delaware fans are different than college fans from other states. A few years ago, after drafting of Cody & Clayton, a bunch of Oklahoma fans became Ravens fans. That would last only so long, as Oklahaoma churns out more NFL rookies and their fan base follows other NFL teams. Because the Wilmington area, Dover, even the shore, are within an hour to two hours drive, these fans can get immersed in Ravens coverage and attend games. And Delaware already does have some Ravens fans, although admittedly is primarily Eagles territory. I have friends from Lewes who make it to every Ravens home game.

On a similar yet unrelated note (lol), just remember...I was the FIRST Ravens fan from Delaware round these parts!...

On a similar yet unrelated note (lol), just remember...I was the FIRST Ravens fan not from Delaware round who wanted to draft Joe Flacco!... (as the Franchise can attest to after I PM'd him after seeing Flacco dismantle Navy's pass defense last Fall in Annapolis).

Delaware fans are different from college football fans from other states b/c it's rare that Delaware has one of its players drafted, let alone in the first round. I am by no means knocking Delaware fans and they have a reason to be excited, but they aren't necessarily better than Oklanhoma fans.

Your Navy reference is one of the specific reasons why so many people are fooled by the Joe Flacco hype:

-Navy's defense was ranked 99th overall in 2007, allowing 36.5 points/game and 48 touchdowns. This includes allowing 263 passing yards/game.

-That stellar Navy defense allowed a monster day to North Texas QB Giovanni Vizza. Vizza's stats against Navy were 40-52 for 478 yards and 8 touchdowns. Are you kidding me?

-Navy's defense allowed Notre Dame to score 44 points. Notre Dame had one of the most pathetic offenses ever, yet they managed to score 44 against Navy.

-Duke scored 43 points when they played Navy. Duke QB Thaddeus Lewis passed for 428 and 4 touchdowns. He also had 1 rushing TD. lewis had a better game than Flacco did when he played Navy, was Lewis a 1st round draft pick? Do people think he is going to tear it up in the NFL?

Perhaps you Delaware fans/Flacco supporters can explain to me why Flacco having a good game against Navy is impressive. This is yet another red flag associated with Joe Flacco and I cannot understand why the Ravens are expecting him to lead an NFL franchise.

well uhhh.. I was the first "real" Ravens fan where Im from. Its called Am. Samoa. A territory under the U.S. Theres too many bandwagons where I live. Im like the only Ravens fan I know. GO RAVENS... But the bandwagon thing has its upside but not as much to its downside. Some ofcourse will join the ravens but I think most of them will diss us into the season.
